what do ppl recommend as the best place to buy a new puter?

one of these large volume companies like ITwarehouse, or dell, or just go to electronic stores like radio rentals or harvey normans.

If you want to upgrade you computer eventually, it is probably best to stay away from companies like HP, Dell etc.

If you don't want to buy all the parts yourself, and put it together (can save some money doing this usually), then make sure you go somewhere that is reputable, and provides a warrantee on parts in the machine, the case, everything, including the monitor. This means that if something breaks, you won't be forced to fork out some money (depending on how long the warranty lasts).

You should buy a second hand Pentium 133. I saw one today in the trading post for $300. It had a 4G hard drive and a copy of windows 95 installed. I'm going to burn a copy of XP and put on it.

The advice here is pretty much spot on.

If you know what you're doing, buy the components separately and build it yourself. However, it'll be harder to chase up warranty, and you'll largely have to fix any problems yourself.

If you don't mind paying a bit extra up-front, go with a name brand - HP, IBM, Compaq, Dell etc. They will have better support.

basically shop around and check what the brand names offer and at what price, when you see something you like take the specs to a reliable company that can put it together for you.

this way you will get a decent warranty and know where your computer is when its under repair.

one note that spend more on the basics now and less on the extras later.

for example a multi format 8 speed dvd burner is getting cheaper by the week, brand name computers tend to only have 4 speed or less single format dvd burners.

get a graphics card not shared graphics, makes the system faster

if you do this 512 meg ram is enough for starters

intel p4 processor, a p4 celeron can save money but give you reliable speeds and intel quality.

cd burner/dvd rom combos are relatively cheap,

if you have a monitor already, you dont need to get a lcd screen straight away, save up for a good quality one,

options

tv tuner card to turn your computer into a video recorder
easy access to front usb ports/ firewire/ and possible card reader drive.

hope this helps.

THE MAIN RULE IS BRAND NAMES DONT GIVE YOU EVERYTHING UNLESS YOU PAY THROUGH THE NOSE FOR IT AND

NUMBER 2: MOST STORES WILL LOVE TO SELL YOU A HIGH PRICED COMPUTER, BUT NOT WANT TO GIVE YOU GOOD AFTER SERVICE.

GET IT BUILT BY A RELIABLE COMPUTER SHOP AND EVEN THEN GET A FEW QUOTES .

cheers mighty mick,

Go to a computer swap meet and have a chat with the sales people there. Most of them have price lists, so even if you're computer illiterate its not likely you will be ripped off, and since they tend to have similar profit margins on all hardware they're not likely to steer you towards expensive hardware (even then, so long as you know how to say no, there should be no problem). Once you've decided on what you want, most of these guys will put it together for you for a small price (as little as $30. Buy all parts from the one guy and quite likely they'll assemble it for you for free).

You'll save a HUGE amount of money that way, even with the labour, and you'll know exactly what you're getting (unlike Harvey Norman or Duck Smith, who give vague specs on the computer hardware, all the while selling crud brands whose performance is well below par). Also, these sellers are legitimate businesses, and often offer warranties when they install the hardware.

Attend a swap meet and have a look around. Worst case scenario you'll decide that its not for you and head down to a major retailer. Since there's so many stalls there, its convenient and you can hear a variety of opinions/advice from these experts. Have a look at this website for more details on the swap meets.
