Today was the last straw IMO.

Just another of the oh so many close losses we've suffered over the years due to a lack of intelligent coaching moves by Ayres and crew.

Sure - we missed shots for goal that should have been kicked.

Sure - the players made errors that they shouldn't have.

But that will happen every week, rest assured of that.

More importantly, once again we appeared to have no structure or gameplan. We scouted round the boundaries for the majority of the day and bombed in high to Carey who can't mark overhead.

But the coaching!!! Pffffffft. Pagan the Pro v Ayres the Amateur.

The 2nd quarter was so telling. Pagan drops DeLuca back to clog our forward line and sends the overweight Whitnall, who had been thrashed at CHF, into ruck.

Ayres counter punch: take Kenny away fom CHB where he had dominated and put him into ruck.

Result: Whitnall dominates the ruck and we can't get the ball past DeLuca. Nice move Gazza!!

I could go on with things such as why was Stenglein on the bench so much after a dominant first quarter?? Why was Roo at FF in the last couple of minutes - surrounded by 30 other players?
Why do we never flood when we have an 8 point lead with approx 3 minutes to play??

The point is that as a force in the AFL we are going backwards in no uncertain manner - and the coaching panel have contributed greatly to this decline.

IMO it's time for a change. Your thoughts??

And what does Gary think of the game?

"While naturally disappointed, Ayres was philosophical about the result."

 :( The only thing he has to be philosophical about is a career change.

I think its a time for a change and not only in the coaching box but also in the football department and the playing list.

Having said that I wouldn't sack Ayres before his contract expires. Whats the point of it?????? We wouldn't make the finals from here even if we had the best coach to ever walk on this face of the earth. Keep him there until the end of the year, thank him for his services over the last 5 years and look for something different.

Thanks, Macca23. I saw this unfolding in the second quarter, I was yelling and screaming towards the box and nothing. Now I know I have never played the game at this or any level (other than school) but I have been going to footy matches since I was 5 (mid-60's) and I think that makes me reasonably astute on things but today was another day that bewildered me and personally I am getting sick of it. The issue is we should have worried about our game plan (whatever it is) and not react to theirs. It was shown in the third that as soon as Clarke took the throwins they had no option but to bring in their ruckman and what happens, we regain control again. One does not have to be Einstein but then again, what would I know.

The problem was in the second we were not getting it into our forward 50 all that often and when we did we bomb it in hoping someone would take a grab but the best part we did not have any crumbers front and centre to collect the spoils, so it just came out again - please tell me I am missing someting.

Another beer please.

I was at Bells today watching the game and before it started (half jokingly) said to the crew "If we lose this one. Ayres will be back in Melbourne by 6pm tonight."
After the game finished I didn't realise the time and said "Better make that 6.30!"
I have have never called for Ayres' head before but I am calling for it now. Today was THE FINAL INSULT. Good-bye Gary. Thanks for the finals appearances and all that, but good-bye.
Eade was/is Sydney/South Melbourne's most successful coach post WW2 but he lost the plot big time and went mid season.

Failing that, we should push for a merger with St. Kilda.

We get:

*75% of St. Kilda's playing list
*An extra $5 million in the salary cap to cover the relocation expenses of all these players
*To fire Gary Ayres and Grant Thomas

We retain:

*The AFC name
*The AFC guernsey
*The AFC emblem
*25% of our current list

St. Kilda members/fans/staff get:

*To see our club on TV

I think he should go down and register at Centerlink on Monday;)

Schuback was a big reason why we won against hawthorn, his pressure, his pace and his awesome disposal brought a new dimension to our dull forward line. So what do we do... play him 3 miliseconds the following week.... I guess because of match up problems??? If you play $hitkickers like Carlton at home after they got flogged by 2 mil goals the week before, you dont leave a good forward like Schuback off the ground because of match ups.

You are very right there. He shouldnt have been left off so many times. His left foot is very damaging and his pace is what we needed out there today

I am a fan of Schueys, I think he can play, but his fIrst quarter was poor and I can UNDERSTAND HIM BEING OFF THE GROUND FOR a period of time.

i thought though he was kept off the ground for too long and he should have returned earlier than he did.

I thought his first was alright. Didnt he set up a goal?

Do you notice that when teams like Sydney and Brisbane make it to September, that the media loves to remind everyone of those clubs' Victorian heritage? That would be what happens if something ridiculous like merging with St. Kilda happens...
