Direct Smith to go to SA under Paine's captaincy and go out of his way to be a good bloke/leader. The shadowbatting/crease stuff put people off again, but that can be redeemed. He is the only option.

Give Smith the job.

*Sandpaper gate was 3 years ago
*He has served his 1 year ban
*He has served his 1 year ban from any leadership role
*He has now waited a further year
*He didn't do a bad job in his previous 34 tests as captain
*He has the experience (only Lyon & Warner have played more test cricket than him)
*He is the best player in the team
*It buys us time to groom our next long term potential captain whoever that may be

While there other candidates out there are they really viable options?

*Other potential candidates are either:
- over the age of 32
- BBL captains/Shield captains who can't either hold their spot or get a game (eg. head, henriques, handscomb , maxwell, finch and wade who's test career is probably over or hanging by a thread and if he does get dropped, he is effectively retired as a test cricketer).
- cummins - in which we traditionally don't give the job to bowlers - while he is now durable - you'd hate for him to miss games to injury and have this whole convo again.
- players who haven't even played a test (eg. Carey) - risky in any case as Carey may debut and say play 7 tests for example and get dropped or get backed into the position of backing him in, if he struggles and deny someone like Inglis etc a game.
- previous players who have held the position and lost their position of vice captain for australia for one reason or another (head, hazlewood, m.marsh)
- OR do we just give the job to Labuschagne ??
- or is there someone else ?

Last time we had a captaincy issue was when Hughes resigned. Border got the gig as he was the only real candidate and was reluctant at first and then went on to captain in 93 tests. (from memory Hookes, Hogg & Wellham were in the running and ultimately hardly played a game after that point).

Either way whoever gets the gig is going to be up against it with tours to India, Pakistan & Sri Lanka in 2022.
