Byrnes' ugly twin is back

Some very good points here. A few times I was thinking "Boy, wish we had another Shan out there!" I thought he worked hard all night.

Lonners had a good night. I've written him off a few times myself, but now with the former skipper having moved on he has a big chance to secure his spot. He won't ever be a superstar but how many players are? I also think he is a bit unfairly judged on that performance on Brown last year - we were being thumped all around the ground and with the way the ball was coming in he really had no chance. I've seen Brown thrash better defenders than Lonners when he's on song like that. He'll probably be beaten a few times this season, but nobody wins all of them.

Tom Lonergan
Apart from being bigger and stronger this year, I think they've decided to run with him as a key post defender cause he's 197cm.
Just consistent games will see him vastly improve from what we've seen in the past. The perenial late bloomer I'd say, not to mention his horrible injury setback.
I've always held out hope for him through the tough times, so I'd love to see him fully develop into a respected senior player.

Not to mention that it was his first senior game in a month, and he had such illustrious company as Gillies, Laidler, Gamble, Djerrkura, Tenace and Hogan. There were too many outs, too many kids and they were too stuffed after the St. Kilda game to ever have been a real chance to win against Brisbane. To be honest I wasn't even upset to lose that game, you could tell they were never going to stay in it.

Yes I was surprised upon checking to see that he's only played 33 games - feels a few more than that (if you'd asked me I'd have said 40 or so). And I think it would be fair to say that his injury would have hampered him by what, 2 or 3 seasons behind where he should be? After his 2007 season, and particularly his VFL GF showing, I suspect I for one just assumed he was back to where he was prior to injury and probably judged him to be a bit ahead of where he really was.

Shagga you little beauty I'm not worthy to kiss the ground you walk on.

That chase-down tackle on bateman was pure poetry in motion, keep it up son and make me eat more of my words it's never tasted better. :thumbsu: :D

Re: Byrnes ugly twin is back..

Try quietly smug... Though that's a bit of an oxymoron. :p

I thought I posted in this thread replying to eliiizas post. Sheesh didn't mean to offend or anything it was just tongue-in-cheek. Hope you didn't take it the wrong way eliiiza.

Re: Byrnes ugly twin is back..

Dunno about his ugly twin but i have enjoyed few plays more than Byrnes running down my most hated player in the AFL, Chance Bateman to win the free kick and sealer right at the end. You little ripper Shannon!

Everyone is aware of Shannon's weaknesses but courage and determination are not part of them. The chase down and tackle was a match winner and that's why Thomson loves him.

Oh! plse tell rabbi, and what would they be?
Since Shannon's so incomplete as a small forward.
Why wouldn't Thompson love him, and all Geelong supporters who've watch both games this season.

I must admit, I was a bit like, 'here we go again' when he missed that shot in the first half. The Shannon of old was emerging, along with the Geelong team of 2006. I don't know what he has to do to prove to me that he's a great player... In my mind I know he is, but there is just an inkling of 'wtf shannon?' left.

He is so important to Geelonns team now; the last quarter specialist! His ability to run all day and tackle everywhere and creep up on people is amazing.
