I absolutely love the kid and can see him developing into a similiar player to Adam Goodes.

Do we expect him to be settled into a fixed position next year or will he play a swing-man role like he did this season? I'd really love to see him get an extened run on the wing next season and eventually move into the middle.

Thoughts?

I like him back on the wing. He has amazing endurance so I'd love to see him just run blokes up and down the MCG. He can drop back and help out in defence and then stretch blokes running forward.

The other option I think is to try him as a half forward. I don't think he'd ever be a dominant marking forward even with another 20kg on him but as a player to help out Bate across half forward he could be handy.

Versatile players are a bit annoying in that they don't have a set position but in a few years I think Morton will be luxury who can play almost anywhere.

yep i like him on the wing, hopefully he should become the go-to man across the centreline given his height and also excellent kick. i think he would be wasted in the middle given our abudance of tough in-and-unders - moloney, mcclean, grimes, jones, sylvia etc.
Just don't put him in the backline - at least once our key defenders stop getting injured.

On the wing & half-forward flank he's a gun, don't like him off halfback for some reason.

He was been playing back as part of the list management thing.

Starting from Round 1, 2010 theres no chance you will see guys like Morton, Sylvia and Davey being wasted in the back line.

Morton should be best suited to the wing next season. He has great endurance, mobility, knows how to find the ball, and his disposal is improving greatly. He could be a very useful attacking weapon.

I'll trade ya Tenace and/or Blake for him?

Experienced gun players for a secnd year kid.... You cant afford not to take this trade!

Bring Playfair out of retirement, chuck him in the deal and I'll sign!

I was going to start at thread and Cale Morton to ask how hes going because I haven't been able to see many Melbourne games this year. However I was able to watch the whole game yesterday and thought he was fantastic. I was really impressed with him decision making, he obviously has a big tank and looks to be living up to his no.3 draft pick. Great to see!

This.

I may sound awful but he will never be a quality player unless he puts on weight. If he does though he could be a superstar.
He definitely needs a bit more size but I wouldn't think he needs too much more weight. Although he should be a class player he doesn't set the world on fire in the speed stakes and his best work is getting into space and around opposition players. Strength is much required (tackling, punch kicking and body on body stuff) but weight is something they will have to be careful about with Morton IMO or it may hinder his movement.

You don't need muscles to be a star, look at James Hird, he was never massive. Cam Bruce is another that not hugely built, even better example would be Dustin Fletcher, and he plays key position!

I never said you did but the fact is that Morton still needs more strength in his body. If you think that just because Hird wasn't a huge unit meant he wasn't strong then I'll disagree. Your point about Bruce is interesting from the pov that he was reasonably nimble like Morton and fits with my original point about body weight, any heavier and Bruce would have been too slow but strength is always a good asset and Morton needs more strength (than weight) in his body without compromising mobility.

Hird was deceptive - he was a lot bigger then u think.

Obviously he wasn't weak but he was by no means the size of a Buckley or Voss, nor do you have to be. Im sure with a few pre seasons in the gym Morton will be strong enough to do what is required.

Good point Ringer!

And Cale's had a damn good season - racking up a lot of possessions at high efficiency, as well as showing himself to be a potent goalscoring option, and being able to shut down the likes of Adam Goodes.

He'll only get better as well :D

Cales 83 kegs. He's mentioned his ideal weight is 85 kegs cause he doesn't want to lose his mobility and engine.

I disagree young Cale. You need to bump that up to 90 kgs, even try 95.

I'm not saying do it all at once cause that will affect your mobility and engine but in 4 years at 92 kegs, 195cms, 23 years old, he will take advantage of opponents.

Goodes burns opponents off with his workrate at 96 kegs. No signs of losing mobility and engine.

Muscle also increases speed, look at the top 100m sprinters, extremely well built. He doesn't need to get that big though.

Hence the strength arguement. You are right in that leg speed is something Morton needs to focus on - with respect to standing start anyway. I like Morton on the run in space but I have also noticed that he can be slow off the mark 1 on 1 at times and gets outbustled which is where upper strength comes into it. He'll improve though.
