Calling in sick

When I worked at the medical clinic, calling in 'gastro' was always the easy way to get out of work - They don't want you anywhere near the place if you have that - I'd say maybe the 10 or so times that I called in 'gastro' over the 4 or so years I worked there, half of them were legitimate...

There was one morning though when I had a major uni assignment due and I hadn't finished it and I was up all night trying to get it done then morning came and I was like 'I can't work now I'm too knackered" but in my sleep deprived hysteria, I felt like I had used up all of my 'gastro' sickies... so I came up with the most ludicrous story that I still can't really believe I went with it..

So around the time I'd normally leave for work, I walked down to the road so the phone could hear traffic, and I called work and told them I'd been hit by a car and knocked off my bike.... I was ok, but very shaken and didn't think it be a good idea to go work that day - They agreed...

It was a bit stupid as for the next week after that I had to catch the tram to make it seem like my bike got smashed and I had to invent a story of how I got hit, which I then started getting paranoid about it actually happening whenever I went past the intersection where I said it happened....

won't ever call in 'hit by car' again - too much of a lie...

It's amazing that in 2015 a lot of places still don't realise that having bosses who are fair, reasonable and easy to get along with isn't the best way to promote good productivity.
It's less to do with companies not realising it, and more to do with the talent not being in the industry.

Being a retail or hospitality manager has to be one of the shittiest gigs going around. Tons of responsibility, crappy hours, crappy pay, and employees who don't give a crap about their jobs. Realistically, most people with the talent to be good at it are going to have better options elsewhere.

Sounds like Bill Shorten negotiated NES :drunk:

My work has unlimited sick leave for certain jobs and it works great. It's created an environment where people don't bring their sicknesses in to work, but it also doesn't get abused
Is it also correct that you are supposed to not work with a headache?

Depends on the severity I guess, but no one's ever told me that.
I'd just heard that as a throwaway line at some point (in the context of the ATC unlimited sick leave) and wanted to know if that was like an official rule etc. Thanks.

Nah there's no official rules. Just don't work if you don't feel well.

It's weird, but I don't think I've ever had a sick day, and that's in nearly a decade of full-time work, and a further five years of part-time work during high school. And since leaving Victoria in mid 2009, I've barely even been sick, other than the mild biannual few day head cold that typically hits on leave/weekend or you can just arm yourself with tissues and lozenges and grit your way through the day.

That said, in school I took sickies all the time, like every few weeks in my last couple years of school. And I work on salary too, no threat of repercussions. Odd.

I think it's got to the point now where I've lost my school-era sickie shrewdness and would feel utterly lost contemplating a classical 'sickie'.

I'm with you.

I absolutely hated school, I used to take sickies all the time (Didn't help that I got frequent migraines). I haven't ever taken a classic 'sickie' since starting my current career, if I'm too sick to go in I can just work from home instead. I would have to be really sick to take a day off.

Although really you should use your sick days. They are factored into your renumeration package (i.e. it is reduced).
