Melbourne recruiting manager Craig Cameron on Burges
"In regard to Callum Burguess. West Coast have allegedly tried to hide this player. Our WA scout has seen him play a number of times for his school side Hale. I watched him myself two weeks ago. He has also been invited to the WA screening camp in October. It's hard to hide them. Every club's recruiting manager has viewed him in the last month"

Deestroy, it would interesting to know what Craig's WA scout thought about him and also what Craig thought when he saw him two weeks ago. Particularly whether he thought that Burges was worth hiding!

Somebody told me PSA is now finished. Could this mean Callum Burges will play for South this W/E?

South who?

He already played 1 game for West Perth Colts to meet draft requirements. Round 17 . 3 kicks 4 handpasses 1 goal. Don't know how long he played for.

He must have some talent if Craig Cameron travelled to have a look at him.

The following will be, or probably have been, invited to the Draft Camp.
Paul Duffield, Brent Hall, Matthew Moody, Jacob Surjan, SF
Brett Jones, Chad Jones, CL
Paul Richardson, Matthew Spencer, SD
Kepler Bradley, Michael Pettigrew, WP
Michael Johnson, PERTH
Lane Spaanderman, EP
Farren Ray, PEEL

Each State in conjunction with the AFL hold Screening Camps where other players get invited to.

Not bad! You only missed one player which was Callum Burges.

Better luck next time.
:D

Burges wasn't on the original Draft Camp list, he was included on the State Screening and only added to the Draft Camp list as a result of pressure on the AFL from several of the Melbourne based Recruiting Managers.

Colin Wisbey says this about Burges

"Haven't seen him first hand, Streaky, not even on tape. FWIW though here's what I have gleaned:-

Is very bottom age, nice build which will fill out, and can play much taller than his 185cm.

Extremely versatile and is equally at home on a small quick, a medium strong, or a much taller opponent. Seems best suited to midfield but equally at home onball in defence or up forward.

Really attacks the ball, gets his own ball, has a very big leap, great pace and is a thumping kick.

I repeat, I have not seen him myself but that is what I have heard.

To present the case for the negative, he only played the one West Perth Colts game (mid July), concentrating instead on school footy - and school footy can be a very unreliable guide to how much talent a kid would genuinely be able to display against quality opposition. Even WAFL Colts standard is a long way below out TAC U18 standard. In his one WAFL Colts game he had only 7 disposals and failed to take a mark.

Will definitely get drafted, possibly anywhere between about 10 and 25.

I've spoken with some who have seen him. Sorry I can't give you any first-hand info though."

Interesting read WCS. Probably confirms a bit about what we know about him.

Very bottom age - does that mean he just makes the cut off for this years draft?

hey sounds good.

I asked him at

http://forums.magpies.net/hotrod/

He has stated the following

1. Happy to give quicky answers to most questions (at least with a period of some days).

2. In the 24 hours before the draft I'll post my usual draft summary table.

3. Within a few hours of the draft, I'll post the profiles of each and every draftee (except for any I don't know well enough) - all clubs.

4. Similarly, on the day of the pre-season/Rookie draft, I'll post profiles (again within a few hours) of all the kids taken that day.

5. Once the drafts are over, I'm happy to post further full profiles on any other players if anyone requests them.

Sorry I can't provide the full profiles and recommendations prior to draft day. I can't answer "Who would you go for?" questions prior to 24 hours before draft day but I'll try to answer specific questions, at least in brief, prior to then.

Apologies in advance if I am letting anyone down. I'm certainly no guru but, as I do watch and study a heap of U18 footy and other people are interested in U18 players but don't get such chance, I understand that I usually fill a bit of that void. And it has been my absolute pleasure to do so. I have the same info this year but I'm a bit busy to post it before the draft. Hope the compromise offered at least partly helps (although I appreciate that the detail will be too after the event for those keen to devour U18 info from wherever they can get in beforehand).

With Wisbey saying he will get drafted anywhere between pick 10 and 25, and us only having pick 11 and 26 in the first 2 rounds

Should we:

a) Take him at 11 with our first pick
b) Let him go and hope he is still there at pick 26
c) Trade a player and draft pick to get a higher pick
d) Leave him and hope he is available for third round pick

We will take the best player. If it is Burges, then it is Burges. If it is Brock McLean, then we will take him. You can never tell until draft day.
