Well done to Cam Shenton...a great reward for a lot of hard work...last year his form was pretty bad...in fact he should have been dropped to Sandy 2's a lot quicker than he was...

But to his credit he has improved enormously this year and thoroughly deserves his chance...

A real good news story this year...hope he grabs the chance...

I'll get here more...we have a game tomorrow against Collingwood which I guess considering sandy's position is fairly meaningless....but it would be nice to finish off the season on a high with wins against Collingwood and Frankston and then start preparation for next year..and the Trevor Barker Beach Oval will be resurfaced and lengthened at the end of the finals this year

Been a terrible season this year..from what I can gather, the alignment will continue next year...beyond that, I guess it depends on whether St Kilda who obviously want their own VFL team, have a ground to play on...I'm not sure what the situation re Moorabbin is as that would be a logical choice, but I assume there is a fair bit of work to do there to get the ground back up to scratch...maybe in 2-3 years something will eventuate. So the possibility is that the alignment may continue until that time...then both teams will go their separate ways

Pretty well documented about the selection decisions this year...taking players out at very late notice...playing players in the seniors who don't deserve to be there...This season Jay Lever has had a charmed run in the sandy seniors when his form simply hasn't warranted senior selection...Scott Watters at fiorst seemed to be quite understanding of how alignments worked when he was coaching in WA...but, that has all changed and I find his attitude now pretty disappointing..after the Geelong game when Blake and Dunell were taken out with an hour to go before the game, I was ready to walk away and do something else in lieu of going to the football...I was livid with Scott Watters with what I think was showing total contempt for Sandy..I know the 2 players involved weren't all that impressed with the decision either..

But no doubt I'll be back next year for another year and hope that we can end up a lot higher up the ladder..
 
I don't think our injury list has helped the affiliation on face value.

Perhaps with a more manageable injury list we could have aided Sandy to a higher degree.

Not liking the default last-minute changes for a few reasons though:

a) it pulls players away from their 'fitness and form' matches to do nothing but sit in the stands for weeks on end due to being 'close',
b) it changes fringe players' match objectives to fit something other than what they've prepared all week for, if ultimately dropped,
c) it can inadvertently send the wrong message to a player who's suddenly dropped and unable to participate at the lower level as a result (time constraints etc).

Sure, pull a few smoky moves here and there, but EVERYONE needs to know what's happening between the two clubs, in order to sustain some semblance of order and promote the affiliation from a parent-club perspective.

Bit of a meh debut. I wonder if he was played out of position, maybe?
 
Anyone know much about this guy?

Was his poor game just due to nerves? I assume he's been playing decently in the VFL to get the call up but I don't know anything about him? Strengths? Are there signs he could be AFL standard?

Strengths are his pace and line breaking ability. Since moving back to defense a few weeks ago he'd been lighting it up, taking the game on and getting up around 25-30 disposals a game. Attacks the ball and man hard and his disposal from what I can remember has been pretty good but I stand to be corrected on that. Once he gets going it is a sight to behold, I'd assume his poor game was due to it being his first one which is very common.

One problem though, and it's that he plays a position where we already have too many options. Given he turns 23 next year it wouldn't surprise me if a harsh call is made on him, but it also wouldn't surprise me if he's given another year.
 
Harsh I know, but I think that will probably be the last we see of him. Given how many other HBF and BP options we have, I think he really needed to light it up to warrant another game next week and another contract for next year, but he simply didn't do it and will prolly make way for Kosi or someone else this week.

He relies very heavily on his pace. The problem is that this is one of the huge step-ups going from VFL to AFL. There are quick players in the VFL, but not in a general (across the board) sense relative to AFL - and certainly not with the same repeat intensity. Then you've got the bigger ground issue, along with the extra fitness requirement of following an AFL forward around (which limits your ability to be as dangerous in an offensive sense).

His tackling isn't AFL standard imo, and (until recently) his kicking has been quite poor - particularly when not running in a straight line. But it seems the latter aspect has really come on. Maybe with confidence, or the fact that he's been able to get a break on his opponent with his pace and preparedness to use it ... not sure (possibly because he's been more inventive - often using a chip kick rather than trying to drill the ball).

It's tough for him (only maybe getting one extra opportunity to settle after an initial struggle to adapt).

I tend to want to keep players who keep materially improving each year.

But we have a massive squeeze if we are to keep injecting new young talent. The club has indicated a desire to pursue mature talent to fill list gaps, and I assume the recruiters will have their eyes on some 18yo's (I haven't been following the trade thread that closely other than to make sure no-one needs to sit on the naughty chair).

Curren has stepped it up. So has Minchi (although more a case that he's stopped getting injured). We've invested alot into Jacko (although that's complicated too with his development having seemingly plateaued and Lever and Staley also probably not being where we might have liked - albeit Staley has put on some size and has shown he can pinch hit in the ruck).

There has to be tough calls, and surely we'd keep Head (if it came to that decision)?
 
Curren, Minchington, Dunell and to a lesser extent Ferguson are reasons why I don't think we should just fill the rookie list with mature backups. We're a developing team, need to keep finding these gems.

we should be able to given there will be a minimum of 2 free spots on the rookie list
