i heard we are interested in steve armstrong. what would it take to get him? A straight swap for Darren Hulme?

couldnt we use our first round pick?

i mean if we used pick 9 + wiggons/johnson for jolly and bruce could work.

although id rather us draft a fleet footed midfielder, bruce will be in his prime in next 4 years and jolly is their 3rd ruckman and i rate him a bit. bruce aint work pick 9 alone, but combine with jolly and offer a player who would work well in dannihers game plan who knows.

No. We need that first round pick as we are rebuilding - we need a potential gun CHB, ruckman, whatever. Bruce would be good as a midfielder/half-forward flanker but we have enough players who can fit that role and we'd be better off improving other areas. Besides, we don't have anything Melbourne would want from us. That #9 pick should NOT be traded unless we could get Judd/Rivers/Wells, some young gun like that. So we will remian with it I suppose.

im in full agreement ...

we need to try and get another 1st round pick for whitnall some how as well ...

i mean a bloke by the name of troy chaplin, david mundy, potential chb's were taken at 15 and 11 or so respectively last year, and they both have HUGE raps ...

we need someone like that i reckon ... midfielders are a dime a dozen in the draft ... unless your in top 5 picks its pretty much a lottery to an extent, i mean a bloke at 25 could be better than a bloke at 10.

draft a rivers/seaby type ill be rapt.

As i stated, Bruce is not worth pick #9.

In order to gain descent players, you must get rid of descent players. For Calrton to go forward they must keep their low draft pick and gain a youngster. You are still in the re building phase and will be for some time. I'm not saying you are no good, all i'm saying is, you'll be better for it in the future. Don't worry bout securung big name players.

We are not that good in the midfield Thrawn. Don't think otherwise. Just because you rattle off a few names, some of whom are good doesn't mean that our midfield problems are eased.

Kouta, Campo are getting on, therefore we must get a midfielder in ASAP in order to blood him for the big time, we're talking bona fide class. We need to construct a midfield otherwise not even the best defence in the world could stop supply from the midfield where we're getting beaten.

Look at our defence, polled well in the B&F because the problem for us was not getting beaten in defence, but because the supply from the opposition midfield was too good. If you look at the stats, the numbers of times we got pummelled, it wasn't really our defenders' fault that they had bags kicked on them, it was because the opposition midfield were rampant and provided lace out passes to their gun forwards.

The numbers of goals midfielders kicked against us was also worrying. If you think we can wait to get another midfielder, I think we'll be found wanting in a couple of years time. Having said that, I'm making an early prediction in saying that Bentick will play 150 games.

Of course we aren't, but our ruck stocks and defence are worse and have far little depth than our midfield. As I said before, injuries to our defence will be far more damaging than injuries to our midfield. When French went down, we were in big trouble - DeLuca can't do it alone. Hence, they should be a higher priority over the midfield.

Walker and Waite are great replacements. Davies might be considered - and depending what we will get during trading and the pre-season draft, we'll probably have a hard look and pick up some underrated young midfielders with our other picks. We need to take that risk.

Johnson, McGrath and Bannister go alright - but we need a quality hardball winner to compliment Stevens.

I agree, but we don't need to put into the midfield as much as we do in defence. Koutoufides and Camporealoe are getting on, but Walker and Waite can fill those voide. Perhpas even Davies if he improves. What we need is a midifleder or two in the Ratten mould - someone that can win the hardball and dish it out.

Which is why we need to inject a hard ball winner or two, especially with speed. The speed of other teams has killed us - but we need to get a balance of both. We need a big body down back as well as a negating small defender. Too many times have we seen small forwards pummel us that tall ones... too many turnovers from the half back line really hurt us.

Geelong don't have the best midfield, but they have the best defence - which is why they're top four. A balance (Brisbane, Port) is a must.

However, we are always bound to pick midfielders up in the draft anyway. We need to use our highest pick on either a ruckman or a strong, big defender to help out Thornton, Norman and Teague. Samll defender in the McKay type would be good, but that's asking for too much. We just need a good kid... don''t really have to be a high pick because you never know if you'll have something special. This depends on trading really and if we can get something for big Lance.

What of Davies, Waite and Walker? I reckon we have too many attacking players - we need a tagger or two who can also be a line-up man when required. Who apart from Bannister and Sporn do we have to stop the good midfielders?

I've also noticed that perhaps our most weakest area is defensive pressure in the forward - or lack thereof. Most teams have rebounded against us at will because they were either way too fast or we didn't apply enough pressure. We miss somelike like a Hickmott - and yes, even a Hamill.
 
Look, that's a fair comment Thrawn, however, with pick 9, we have to pick the best player possible.

My source tells me that if the trading goes right, we'll have our big gorilla for the defence. This is a reasonably reliable source.

I didn't include Waite because I think Pagan wants him at CHF to do some of the bullocking work that Hamill used to do. Waite is extremely good overhead with a very good leap, which is why I don't see him in midfield. Walker on the other hand, he will still be developing next year, I'd like him on the wing with stints of on-ball.

I know we need a CHB and a ruckman, but a ruckman takes time to develop anyway. It all depends on how many first round picks we have. And that hasn't been determined yet... ;)
 
Bruce is, on paper, worth pick #9 but only if you think he is the type of player Carlton desperately need. He may not however, be worth more than the $500K he seems to want.

It is stating the obvious, but you can't get too carried away with draft picks, the decision to swap must be made on a case by case basis. I hope Livingston comes on and plays 200 games but at the moment, I wouldn't bet too heavily on that and he was pick #4.

Would anyone consider a straight swap, livingston for bruce to be reasonable? If so, then isn't that the equivalent of giving up pick #4?

(I don't think that trade is worthwhile because Carlton need a big back man more than they need a goal kicking midfielder/flanker)

Hey everyone, my first post! :)

In answer to that question - no, I don't believe anyone involved would think a straight swap for Bruce and Livingston would be reasonable. Not at all.

Bruce is a highly sought after player and has had a great season. Livingston has continued to struggle, playing only a limited amount of games in 2004, and looked slow at times.

For that trade to go down, Carlton would have to throw in a draft pick and even another player, and probably a quality player at that.

Good question you asked though - is Bruce a player Carlton needs?

I reckon we should be after some quality around the midfield, some tall defenders and a ruckman. A crumbing forward would be handy, too.

he was a former FB in the team of the century and the hawks might want to restructure their team.

Then we swap you Chris Lamb and Luke Molan for Andrew Walker and your first round pick. Afterall Lamb was pick 10 odd and Molan pick 9, so that means we're in effect giving up picks 9 and 10....

Your logic is insane.

We will. Just because he's very good doesn't mean we want to pay over the odds. Otherwise we might end up with a player on 1 million dollars...
