Hoffy95 The only real thing he isn't doing is being damaging. But that could just be what they have told him. i.e. we need you to learn the lockdown role. Don't bother with trying to exploit your opponent.

I see him ball watching a lot.
And it's like he wants to go and get it but he holds back to cover his man.

I've got no doubt he's playing to instructions. They'll be telling him like all younger players to work on certain things within the requirements of winning a game. I've got no doubt either that the coaches would absolutely love him. That kind of composure and coolness would make them drool.

Yep he's got cool hands.
Needs to change his name like Rooke and Bartel did.
But to Luke.

On to Guthrie, there's no young player on our list I've got more confidence in. He oozes calmness, composure and a cool head under pressure. His disposal is already very good (did anyone see the pass to Corey across goal in the last quarter? Ridiculously risky but pulled it off effortlessly). He needs to improve areas like all players do. But he is going to be around for a long, long time so get used to him.

I've sung Guthrie's praises far and wide already, but the quoted part of your post sums it up nicely for me Partridge :thumbsu:

Guthrie is one of those players - like the Corey's still are at times - that just blends in because he's so reliable. I see his good work, but he's no eye catcher like Motlop. He could get 20 possessions and I'll only remember one or two. That's not a knock on him, he's just a quiet achiever out there.

If he ends up anywhere near as good as either Enright or Corey we'll all be doing cartwheels. But agreed he'll be one of those players that just gradually develops until you realise he gets 25 touches a game and rarely makes mistakes. Hopefully.

Still got work to do of course. But very, very promising. Yet another Wells gem.

if there was a public competition run by a newspaper that counted pressure acts, sticking to the game plan, doing the 1% and playing the team game, he would be the most picked every week with the highest score.

As there is no such thing - he gets knocks and is not appreciated as much. Time will tell a different story. I remember Mackie and Lonners getting a similar pasting. That went well....

Go Catters

Couldn't agree more.

I remember us not noticing Corey Enright at all, other than a sort of "meh, he's ok" sort of response. Up until we all collectively realised how incredibly good he really was (and still is).

Plenty still haven't noticed

Guthrie has great composure similar to Enright, which is so important on the last line or bringing the ball out of d50.

Given he holds his form/continues to improve he is now a permanent member of our back line and 200 gamer or mine.

Guthrie is a far better contested mark than Enright at the same age too.

It's still an issue for him though, when he gets into a strength contest shoulder to shoulder or with blokes leaning back into him - as it was early on for both Enright and Harry Taylor.
He needs to watch them and how they overcame the issue with better footwork and timing, positioning themselves so they can get their arms into full play without interfering with the opponent and/or being shoved out of the contest.

Wasn't Guthrie top 10 or something at the draft camp for standing vertical leap?

Nice work!
It was in my memory but he doesnt seem that kind of player.
Which is kind of great in my opinion. Who knows what he'll bring with confidence and freedom.

Need to remember as well he was the best and fairest winner at the Calder Cannons the year he got drafted... if you listen to BT the moron thats the greatest junior program in the history off the world (of course the falcons is actually)

But he played with Preston, Libba, Wallis.... he can play...

Have we uncovered a new run with player... thats how Hunt got into the middle

In between with Guthrie.

Cannot see where his knockers are coming from. Looks good to me for an inexperienced player but has not shown enough to say he will be a 200 game player just yet for me.

But he does have some nice skills and a cool head.

Speak for yourself! "Meh, he's okay"? He was clever and skilful from the get go, it was just a matter of getting a clear run at it (suffered quite a few injuries early on), and working his way into a position that best suited him. I agree with your last sentence though - he improved very gradually such that no one really noticed a clear turning point, or breakout season, and it came as a realisation after the fact that he was actually a truly elite player, not just a very good one.
