I see Cameron Wood played the last 5 games in Brisbane making a total of 7 for the season. He was lucky to get some game time because of injuries but this would have helped his development. Has anyone heard that he wants to come back to SA? If so would you look at him so that we have an extra ruckman for the future. Any Westies people have any knowledge of him wanting to return or is he contracted?

We don't need him. Hudson, Maric, Meesen and Griffin is plenty of depth and judging by John Reid's comments on 5AA today, Griffin will most likely stay on the list and we are unlikely to be in a market for a ruckman this off-season.

Laughed off suggestions that we are after Gardiner. We definetly wouldn't consider Spider. Won't announce delistings until after the trade week. Trade week is over-rated  because there are no quick fixes. It often like for like trades. We will go in with a list of players that we are willing to trade. Club has high hopes for 3 young ruckmen on our list. Impressed with Meesen's second half of the year and we can use him as a ruckman and a forward. Club impressed with Griffin and so are the Doggies (SANFL).

Thats pretty much it.

i dont think the lions can afford to let him go. didnt they delist keating?

Judging by Ried’s comments on FiveAA, Griffin is an absolute lock to be with us next year. Not a bad decision, as when he went head to head with Meesen this year he fared pretty well. Good mobility, but must put on another 5-10kg.

Will be very intriguing to see who we delist; a few have to be dumped and unless Hart and Clarke retire I have no idea who that will consist of.

If we trade for Gardiner I will be very, very unhappy. If we’re looking at picking up a ruckman, out of all the available prospects around Australia, Craig Parry would be my choice. But I don’t see what’s wrong with Hudson as our #1, and Maric and Meesen as the back-ups.

And any suggestions of the Lions parting with Wood are ridiculous, he's a tremendous prospect.

Such a disappointing mindset from the current staff.

I'd say the consecutive trading periods of 94/95 when we landed Bond, Connell, McCartney, McLeod, Jarman, Ellen, Caven and Koster turned out OK for us pretty quickly.

In the extremely unlikely circumstance that 2 of our top 3 ruckmen go down during the year, I'm more than comfortable with Griffin starting off the bench. But thats really unlikely. Wood is a great player, but seriously, we don't need him. Maybe we could pick up a older ruckman with a 5th rounder or the PSD, but thats the extent of our ruck needs fulfilled for 2007.

True enough. We didnt pay over the odds in any of those trades though.

Scott Stevens has even proved to be a good get

I don't think the club are closed to trading only that they don't pin hopes on picking up a Pavlich to sovle all our problems at once.

I think this is my one major beef with the current hierarchy. History will show that clubs who are winning premierships are equally good at both trading and drafting. Port had as many as 9 players in their premiership 22 that got to Port via trade.

In no way am I suggesting to go nuts and trade at all costs but surely there would need to be some balance and if we think there is a player there that would help us we should go after him. If it means trading a player from our best 22 then so be it. We are in this business to improve and be winners.

Since Craig has taken over we have made 2 trades (1 in each off-season) and the only reason those transactions took place was because a player from our list wanted out. This year will be interesting. We don't have any players that want to be traded so I think it would be a pretty safe bet that we won't do a trade.

As I said somewhere on this board recently, as much as people love to bag Robert Shaw he was exceptional in list management. He made the trades that he liked and players that were drafted under him have generally gone on to be good AFL players. Malcolm Blight might have won us the 2 flags but make no mistake Robert Shaw did a lot of great ground work for Blight to go all the way.

Is it a coincidence that we made the 2 greatest trades in the history of our club when Robert Shaw was at the helm and dare I say it that both of those players were major reasons why we won those 2 flags.

I will keep saying that trading is equally important as drafting and the sooner the current regime realise this the better for the all concerned.

I agree, perhaps JR should cast an eye over Sydney's list?

Certainly a couple of useful players there picked up as trades.
Barry Hall (AA)
Darren Jolly
Nick Davis
Paul Chambers (meh)
Paul Williams
Ted Richards.

Fair to say that majority of those are vital to their success. Ted Richards has also been very important to their structure this year.

And the Crows had these traded from other teams:
Bassett
Bode
Biglands
Clarke
Thompson
Stevens
Torney
Welsh
Massie (emergency)
Interesting that 7 of those were returning South Australians! I think that shows that we have been involved in trading in the past.

And thats the key. BTW, Biglands was never part of a trade.

Now of those players how many were brought into our club via trade since Craig became a head coach?!

Chill Pill?! :D

Clarke will most likely retire so we are left with 4 of which 3 are youngsters. Sounds reasonable to me
If you go and recruit an experienced ruckman to backup Hudson, Maric & Meesen....why then do you need Griffen???

I'll tell you why because again as an insurance policy against either or both Maric/Meesen going home that retain Griffen.

Now that's crap list management!!

We did it when were trying to get a forward KPP, we recruited 3-4 in the hope that one turned out OK.....they didn't and consequently our list depth was far too weak.

Most teams play 30-35 players in a season...that means 3 players generally don't get a game (first year draftees often)

So why in the hell keep "insurance' players :thumbsd:

But I don't think we will go after experiences ruckman ;)

I expect Hudson, Maric, Meesen and Griffin to be our listed ruckmen next year.

Then why even spruik that we are after one....if not an experienced one then I don't understand why you put the faith and bucket loads of developmental work into Maric/Meesen.

What has been said today has discouraged Maric/Meesen not encouraged them to work harder.........shocking message......bad player management!

BTW if you have watched Griffin play for Centrals it's obvious there is no way he could play next season!!!
