Discussion Can a genius just DM me their team so I can ruin it?

Every single season I play this game, I do the full pre-season grind. Start in November, spend months of my life perusing these forums, read every writeup on every rookie, and every club press release about how "everyone is training the house down" and "is in the best shape of their career", listen to every hack's podcast, and watch every supercoach YouTube vid, and tinker with my team 500 times.
Finally, I lock in a team that seems to be a perfect mix, some reliable premos, a couple of sure thing mid-pricers, a long-shot or two, and all the right rookies who are likely to play, and I enter the season full of confidence, thinking this is my year.
And then... without fail, I spend the first half of the season correcting a dozen mistakes and chasing my tail, trying to recover from a 50k+ ranking while my mid-pricers average 50s and my premos have their worst seasons in years, and my rookies drop a 10 and never play again.
Another thing i notice is that, season after season, that there are people in here who are just the opposite of me, starting in the top 10k and never dipping out, all year.

So... all I'm asking, and I'm really not asking for much, is for one of you certified genius savants to flick me a DM before opening round and give me a good starting team. Don't worry, I'm not going to be any threat to your overall rank. It is an absolute guarantee that I will find a way to completely ruin the team from there. I'll rage trade and hype trade and just generally bad luck myself into obscurity.
But shit, I'd just love to know the feeling of getting a good start for once.

3 load up on players between 350k and 200k higher ownership the better

4. Use your early trades to upgrade your misfire expensive rookies into premium/cheap rookie.

Do that and you should do pretty well.

Always chase value is the most important part

Except maybe choosing a captain and/or locking in a player that's a really safe bet to finish as a keeper in their position (Bont, Xerri, Gawn etc). If you pick a team of only undervalued players it's almost impossible to finish outside the top 10k. You would have to be very unlucky and a poor trader.

In deciding what is undervalued, look carefully at past history of scores over multiple seasons while still being aware of role changes etc that may affect performance.

One other rider with the value pick approach - also be wary of players on the career downslope through age or misadventure (hello Clayton Oliver).

Trade in players when they are bottoming out unless it's super obvious they are having a break out season in which case getting on early can be high reward (and high risk).

3/4 captain/vc picks (don't worry about price)

Look for underpriced premo's, but also don't die on the hill for "value". Every year folk talk themselves into supposedly underpriced guys that in the end don't really out-perform their price. I did it this year with Cerra and Oliver

Set and forget in the rucks. Always start a R/F @ R3. ALWAYS.

Don't take injury faults because "value" - Hayden Young this year for example. Hearts will be broken

Nothing wrong with a cookie cutter starting team.

Value is great but so are extra trades. 2 sligthy overpriced premos that last all year and a rookie vs 3 "value" players is 1 future trade vs 3 future trades.

Be very careful with breakout players in the $300k range. 92% of these picks fail*.

I’ll stand on that hill that the 300k price point is fine. You just need to accept them as overpriced rookies who you will most likely need to trade out and structure accordingly. It’s the 400k players that kill your team.

For starting team just pick premiums who are main distrubutor down back, full inside mid and full time ruck. Same goes for mid pricers. Copy rookies off someone who ranks well.

See with these picks I actually have them in 2 different categories.

1 is fallen premium. These guys always have ridiculously high ownership and are safe bets cause even if they fail everyone has them.

2 is your breakout guy.
My key with these guys is volume and don’t take risks above 350k because under 350k they can still make you 100k and be a stepping stone to an early upgrade. Take 6-8 and you only need to hit on 2 to get a huge jump on the pack.

Normally it’s a combination of Mature body + mid time and/or HB distribution

Wanna know the secret to my abilities as a coach...

If i had to single out one main thing to do to get off to a good start, that would be only pick players with 10% ownership or more. Go through them all and find the ones to discard. CD rewards high ownership.

Second main thing i have learnt is to not pick players over 600k. Want premos closer to 500k then 600k.

Tried to reinvent the wheel and it's a no go, have to follow the crowd but simply do it better.
