Can dogs get depression?

You often hear of Killer Whales in captivity getting really depressed and dying because of it. Mainly because they are bored of their pool surroundings and frustrated with the lack of stimulation.

Wouldn't surprise me if some outgoing, intelligent dogs had the same problems.

Someone told me once (could be bull####) about a farmer who had a young family and a horse that started to act strange - the horse was really listless and wouldn't leave the barn to go outside.. the vet checked it out - nothing wrong.... the horse stopped eating and was withering away... everyone was concerned

someone suggests an animal psychologist and after s******ing/eye rolling, they agree to do it... the psychologist visits the horse and says it seems to be suffering from a depression of some sort but it was hard ot work out why....

then they asked who interacted with the horse the most and it was the farmer's youngest daughter... they asked what did she do with the horse and she said that over a period of months she would just spend 30mins or so each day lying on top of the horse in the morning - not riding it just lying on top of it

they ask her why and she is reluctant to explain... then they send HER to a psychologist and discover that the girl was being sexually abused by someone and her way of coping was to lie on the horse and share its warmth.. but the horse was actually absorbing her depression/mental trauma and the daughter's emotions were manifesting in the horse

So they sorted out the girl's issues and the horse made a full recovery

As I re-read what I typed I am highly dubious of the authenticity of this story but I thought I would relay it for interest.

Jeez, this is much more involved than I realised, clearly.

On the stories so far, it seems that there is often a trigger for the animal to get depressed. The story about the horse, the trigger was the daughter. Something happens, something changes in their life, to trigger this.

So, if perhaps I can pin down what's changed in his life or surrounds, then I might be able to solve it.

On the plus side, he did eat his faeces this morning, so that's a positive.

I think you may have to consider that your dog has been racially abused by a golden labrador and is struggling with his identity.

It must be tough as a black labrador. I mean, have you ever seen a movie where the cute little talking labrador is black? No, they are always golden. How about the plastic labrador statues that collect donations for the blind? Again, always golden. The black labrador is under represented in society and perhaps he is struggling to find a path in a golden labrador's world.

Labradors are for blind people. Hanging around people not being able to see the beautiful women this country is renowned for (outside of a 2 mile radius from a Mcdonalds) must be depressing. So depression must be in the gene code by now.

Have you come home to find your dog blasting Placebo out of his kennel yet?

If your dog is listening to The Smiths you need to call Beyond Blue ASAP.
