Perhaps the club should offer the players they traded away a few bucks, sit them down and ask what is wrong with our club. What is different about Freo that they couldn't perform well enough to warrant a place on our list, yet fire up when moving elsewhere.

Brodia Holland, James Clement, Adam McPhee and Paul Medhurst. Come on down.

Well maybe not people who are still playing for another club like McPhee, Holland & Medhurst, but yeah they might be some merrit in your idea...
Spider Burton, Clement, Justin and Troy Longmuir may be able to provide some insight into things. Leave no stone unturned kind of thing I guess...

Why the hell would those guys want to come back and talk to us? That's like ex-lover bullshit. We don't want to know what they've given their new lovers, or the lasting fetishes they now have because of you. :thumbsd:

well he has played at 2 AFL Clubs. You want perspective don't you?
I think any person who has been part of the AFL system is worthy speaking to....

We should have that info here already.

Solly , Keplar , Mark Johnson.

Interesting to hear Matt Carr on the day He retired adn Glen Mitchell asked him about the WA media,
He said "only people that have been on both sides of the country appreciate how different it is."He then went on to compare Tazza to Kosinski who has been up and down as well.

He said that Kosinski might get one article that gives hm a bit of a bake and that's it.

He reckons that after a while the speculation becomes accepted as fact by the supporters and in repeated ad nauseum to them and it does get to the people that are not used to it.

Said the only thing they can do is try to ignore it and get on with things.

Glen then changed the subject immediately.

...

Clubs have always gone to their traded players for whatever info they can provide. It wouldn't be that useful I feel.

As for the Carr interview, that is spot on and obviously not the first time that has been said. People over east (especially Sydney & Bris) have no idea how bad it is here. If I was a pro-footballer here, I would make a special point of NOT reading any media. If I needed it, I would get my news from Sydney morning herald or the Australian or something like that as they have less of an invested interest in beating up lies, rumour, stories, over reacting in general and the out right lies.

That's what annoys me the most about it. If it was just the media writing an article every so often, fine. There is a large part of the 'supporter' base who regurgitate what they read as fact though. That is where the problems start.

A dollar-per-goal tally for a young KP player is a perfect example.

A Fremantle player getting booed at Subiaco Oval when they miss a set shot is another more recent example.

I think anyone who lives in WA should make a special point of not reading the print media over here.

It'll be a cold day in hell before the West or ST get another dollar out of me.

Former players would provide valuable feedback. However, to make comparisons across different clubs is hard, because each team has a different game plan/strategies. Dont read into players playing well at other clubs too much, often they are traded because they are unhappy, not just because they are not performing.

Players like Medhurst, yes, they are playing well, but they fit much better into sides which suit their style of football. Collingwood have 3 great crumbing forwards, in davis, didak and medhurst. Fremantle really only have one, in farmer. So collingwood suits medhurst. I can agree that they will provide feedback, but every club is differrent. Sometimes its not just the club that prevents the player from getting the best out of themselves, but the media, homesickness ect. Although it is concerning how much some players improve when they leave the freo nest. A scary thought when thinking about the likes of Mcphee and medhurst, who is in career best form.

Besides one decent year (and even if he had a year like that at Freo he wouldn't have been given AA) McPhee has been shite.

Well, not everyone became better player when left Freo. Leigh Brown remained the same dud, Graham Poilak is no b etter at Richmond as he was at Freo, Jess Sinclair is not a superstar and McPhee really had only one good season.

Waste of time IMO.

Going on the names selected there would be more sour grapes than a case of greek wine. If we're selecting crabs that didn't want to play for us in the first place, we should get hold of Clement and Croad first up. I'm sure we'll get some real useful info.

As said, we already have plenty of players than came from different clubs. Harvey comes from one of the most successful teams of the 90s. There is enough outsdie expereince to draw from

As for the media, it is a sad state of affairs. I know we've been accused of being losing whingers and blaming the media, but Vics have no idea how it works here.

You'll find all the people that still think newspapers and TV report facts without bias and agenda, are the ones that jump on 6PR and just repeat Brad and Barra's opinions right back at them, as if they thought of it first.

Its because the media use rampant speculation and start rumours to suit themselves, that saw Macca come out and refute his reported retirement. I know, I know, some people were upset that wasn't true and can't wait for it to happen. Why do you think the bastards did it?

That's the level they operate at.

Are you deliberately leaving out D Bandy? And Koops; didn't h star once we traded him!

No I'm not. Freo has been blasted in the past for trading players that I named [and few others, like Clement, Medhurst, Holland...etc] because they supposedly became better players at other clubs. I just disagreed with some of those.
I always liked Bandy but he's just a good WAFL player, that's all [I think we have few of those on our list atm]. Koops is a dud, one of the shining lights of Freo trading history :).

Spot on. I very occasionally read the Worst at the local library or if it's referenced here (never buy it) just to keep up with the misinformation running around.

As for past players, one of the misconceptions taken as fact is that Freo players go away and become better players. Due to our heavy trading in the early 00's there are more of them, but most players who get a 'fresh start' look better at their new clubs - some don't. The Freo ratio is probably much the same as many other's running around.
