Can Fremantle become the number one club in WA?

Who cares? I'd rather be the smallest club and be wildly successful.

e.g. Thursday night, the 2,000 Geelong fans going nuts amidst the deafening silence was awesome.

To me, being 'number one' at something or 'big' in general is a debate that fans with inferiority complexes worry about. In other words, Essendon.

Freo dont have to do anything... WC have it jammed in reverse and pulling 7k RPM so hard theyll get there eventually

Games of footy are expensive to attend in WA and there are people who don't want to waste their money attending West Coast games.
They would rather attend Fremantle games so they get value for their money.
This is the dumbest thing I’ve read in the past week.

So what's the demographics of Freo? I kinda have them pegged as the Port Adelaide of WA, but I was told that Freo is far more upmarket and higher socio economic than Port is?
Definitely not

Freo are very blue collar , with deep grass roots

WC are a broader mix of Chardonnay sipping bandwagoners , retired boomers , blue collar workers and tattooed FIFO types with Agro personalities
Not saying they don’t have grass roots though

One thing both supporter bases share in common is that other than the Western suburbs bandwagoner’s they are mostly all footy mad , dyed in the wool AFL nuts .

Fremantle have a great opportunity to become the number one club in WA with their cross town rivals in the wilderness and looking at missing finals for the fifth consecutive season.
We've already seen Fremantle's average home crowds rise to 46,000 in 2024 thanks to West Coast being uncompetitive.
If Fremantle can achieve sustained success of making finals regularly while West Coast remain in the wilderness, there's no reason why they can't become the number one club in WA.

What are your thoughts?
I mean, it can happen.
If West Coast can have 30 years of shitness like Fitzroy after WW2, they can be overtaken.
Add another 30 years and they might be dead.

Longmuir I think is trying to instil the right culture into the list, so by "#1" you mean a premiership? They might give it a real crack in the next few seasons. They'd have to pull a Hawthorn 2008-2015 feat to equal West Coast.

I mean as much as the Bulldogs can overtake Collingwood with sustained success etc. The Blues 30 year drought still hasn't allowed the Dogs to overtake them, or even the Hawks, so I'll say nay.

It's a stereotype/myth people - mostly Freo people - like to perpetuate. I think there was a study that debunked that. There's a rough north/south divide, but plenty of Freo fans North and Eagles fans south of the river.

Deep grass roots? You have no more ties to the WAFL or pre AFL WA football than we do.

Eagles also I would bet have far more support in the regional/indigenous communities outside the Southwest.

Last paragraph is correct, the rest is bollocks from personal experience.

So many Freo supporters want to claim they are not Chardonnay sippers when my cohort of Freo supporting mates are 2 x senior HS principals earning $200k plus ea, a board member of a ASX listed gold miner, 2 x partners in accounting firms (very feral), a manager with Dale Alcock Homes, a CFO of a management software company, a manager of a railway worker team (I’d give u this but then again, he’s the manager), the purchasing manager of a major marine supplies company etc etc etc.

PS, all except one were full on WC pre
Dockers

PSS they aren’t Chardonnay sippers and neither are the vast, vast, majority of WC supporters - we just know football better!

I think it's basically those who just stayed loyal to the Eagles and those who went to the Dockers because they identified more with the Freo area, or South of the river more broadly, or wanted another side to follow. Not to say they are disloyal or there's anything wrong with that, growing up not too far from Fremantle I think if I wasn't so dyed in the wool I would've come over. Growing up in the Melville area I was way more used to south of the river and prefer Freo the place to the Perth CBD. My parents now live in the City of Cockburn too.

I think according to one survey Canning Vale had the most Dockers while Dianella had the most Eagles. So middle class kids and families and a lot of older Italians...Daniella is hardly a rich suburb in Perth. Indeed, despite the Italian history and presence in Fremantle, seems WC has had more Italian boys than Freo for some reason.

In terms of accolades, I don't see it for a while, but in terms of public perception I think we've comfortably overtaken them for about 4-5 years, but that's not hard with West Coast putting out record bad performances.
