Was 2022 Fremantle's one shot at a flag?

Why was 2022 their one shot?

The core of their team isn't even in its prime yet.
Walters and Fyfe haven't been relevant for a few years and O'Meara is borderline 22.

Outside of that who are they losing over the next 5 years? Pierce and Ryan should see out the decade and have another few cracks at it when their best players like Brayshaw, Serong, Treacy, Bolton, Young, Jackson, Clark, Darcy and a few others are in their prime.

Coach will be moved on soon and they'll fly up the ladder.
Premiers in 2027.

I don't see them winning it in the next few years, and I don't say that just an Eagles supporter. 2022 wasn't it either. Though if they replace the coach, new gameplan and get a few pieces in place they might have a chance.

West Coast won a flag in 2018, same year Optus first opened.

West Coast sucking at the moment has nothing to do with the move from Subi
Eagles won the flag in 2018.

But they Already had significant finals experience, if you are talking about the last 10 or so years.

2008-10 was 3 years of no finals and plenty of kids drafted.

2011-12, a preliminary final and an Elim final win.

2013-4, no finals.

2015-17, a grand final loss, an Elim final loss and Elim final win in Adelaide.

2018: flag.

I agree, it barely had anything to do with moving out of Subiaco oval

Fremantle got well beaten by Collingwood at the MCG in the semi final in 2022 . What part of that was letting it slip ? They weren't winning on grand final day at the same venue . If anyone let 2022 slip it was Collingwood who were level with Geelong in the QF with less than a minute to go and rolled the dice on winning rather than going for extra time .

2022 they were lucky to beat the Dogs who were lucky to scrape into 8th on percentage. No match for any of the top 4 sides. That window wasn't open and still isn't. Their time will come once the last of Walters, Fyfe etc. move on. 2026/27 window opening.

2013-15 was their window and they played low scoring Ross Lyon football.

2013 couldn't kick straight and you don't win many games scoring 62 points.
2014 straight sets losing at home to Port who kicked 12.10 to 5.5 in the second half. Did manage a huge 83 points though.
2015 all they needed to do was beat Hawthorn who had already travelled to Perth for the QF and lost and they would be in a neutral GF against WC and they lost scoring 67 points.

I remember when Freo fans thought they were a contender in 2006 because they beat WC during the season. That was cute. 1-4 against Adelaide and Sydney in H&A in finals but sure, contender.

Freo have a window opening with a good young list loaded with talent.

They don't rely on Walters or Fyfe any longer and it's only really Pearce and Ryan who are their aging stars who they need to look at replacing in the upcoming years.

Freo's issue is JLO.

Great assistant coach and footy brain but he's not head coach material and they should be going hard for John Longmire, Ken Hinkley or Luke Beveridge. Hinkley hasn't won a premiership but his H&A record is very good and you could argue he's gotten the best out of a lot of lesser talented players.

2013 was their chance they were brave in the Grand Final but couldn't handle the pressure when it mattered, top 4 in 2014 and and then finished top but Hawthorn knocked them out in 2015 when they were at their best. A surprise finals appearance in 2022.

Agree it's JLo but does he have a good footy brain?

Seems more like a good bloke country bumpkin but no clue what he's doing.

Fremantle had the perfect mix of age and experience in 2022, and they beat Geelong and Melbourne in Victoria who were the top 2 teams on the ladder.

It's looking more and more like 2022 was their one shot at a flag, especially when you consider the fact that it's the only year in the last decade they've qualified for finals.

I'm of the opposite view.

I think he has a good footy brain, but he lacks the charisma or edge that good coaches have when it comes to getting their message across.

Even guys like Lyon, Clarkson, Scott, and Bevo have some personality or a hard edge.

For mine, listening to JL in a review session would be boring as hell, I reckon I'd tune out.

'Blown their one shot' refers to a squad that is aging out and about to be rebuilt.

We're the opposite, we've named the youngest and least experienced team in the comp most weeks this season. The vast majority of our team are still in their early 20's.

What we do need is a new coach, preferably by this Thursday.
