Can he Conca?

Can't that be done on the training track?

The best way to learn is on the field.

I think he will start slower than a lot of players take around him in the draft, due to less of a pre season, but gee is he classy. Has that Cotchin ability to seem like he is never rushed. I think the most important thing is he scored huge on the psych test which tells you he will go a long way.

OK...they must only do fitness training at during the week these days!

Look at GCS as an example, they had 2 years to prepare for last night's game and they got trounced.

IMO nothing matches actual match-day experienced and at AFL level for development.

This is the longer version. :p

But until then, I'll be sweating on the Conca > Heppell decision. The latter looks like he's going to be gold for the Dons, and we were in the box seat.

Hope he gets better and better and eventually is a great pick and superstar, just ever weary as always with Richmond's recruiting.

Don't sweat what you can't change.
Conca to me looks a little out of his depth in the two senior games he has played.
He looks like he is adjusting to the pace of the game and as such, his decision making and execution has been below standard.

I'm confident with the plan they have in place for him and for him being a very good player for us.

As for Heppell, his decision making is also the issue. He's had an easier run over the past couple of games playing loose in defence. However, there were times today when he fumbled under pressure and turned the ball over by foot which others would not have done. This could improve in time too.

Harsh on both players who have two games to their name - sure.

But if we to analyse Reece and compare him to Heppell, let's look at both their games through the same lens.

Anyone sweating on the Griffiths/Tapscott decision??

Tapscott was not on the board for our second pick.
If we wanted him, we would have had to have picked him at 3.

But he did look good today.
Hopefully we have our own version in the making in Helbig.

tapscott was 18, Griffiths was 19-my mistake.

If Tapscott not on the board for second pick our mistake

It seems everyone missed the point though that he is a midfielder NOT a backman. So he should be learning 'matchday' conditions as a midfielder;)

No he was a midfielder when playing for WA in the TAC cup, he was then elevated to the senior list in Perth where he played the majority of the season in the backline.

The kid will make his way into the midfield, he's had an interrupted pre season and Dimma obviously has plans for him and how to develop him properly.

cant believe everyone saying he hasnt been that good, from my view he has been pretty good for a first year player, shows composure, good skills and i love the way he keeps a cool head when in the backline.

heppell has been better in the first two games but so what, their careers go for 10+ years and it doesnt mean he will end up the better player.

i still think heppell will be a HBF'r, and im waiting to see how he goes when he has a direct opponent, conca has had a tougher gig playing on milne and heppell has had a much easier ride running off half back and often playing loose man.

wouldn't be so quick to assume that. i recall Paul Roos saying a month ago that most kids at 18 don't have a defensive game developed before they're drafted, they are mostly used to running around freely in the u/18's/16's without needing to be accountable.

putting conca on a player like milne would be great experience for teaching him how to play tight, even if he is a prospective mid later down the track.

Watching Heppell for the past couple of rounds it is clear that he is being used as a spare man in defence, so naturally he will gather more possessions without being accountable to a direct opponent.

Conca is learning to be accountable, when you have to chase the competitions best small forwards all day you learn real quick that AFL isn't all about 1 way running.

He also beet Garlett quite comfortably in the head to head battle a couple of weeks ago, kept him to something like 7 Possessions and 2 Goals (1 directly from a Deledio mistake) while gathering 15 Possessions himself.

It's only natural that when you play on someone who has 200+ games experience on you that he will do a number on you, but where we are at as a team playing Conca on Milne is worth 10 games of experience for him and he will have learnt a harsh lesson in the art accountability.

Exactly. He is being taught how to play @ AFL level where you are required to play both sides of the ball.
