Yes, I know it's a hole. A cold hole. A cold hole that is also home to the nation's pr0n stocks. But in about a month it's also going to become my hole of residence, because I've just landed a job there.

So anyone who has lived there or had reasonable experience in the place...please, tell me all that there is to know about our nation's capital!!!
(weather and smut-accessibility aside...)

And if you wanna get somewhere, turn around and go the other way. All the roads are designed to look pretty on a map, but on the ground you get lost quite easily! Too many circles and arcs for mine.

They have a cracking mini golf course.

About the only highlight of my grade 6 camp as well I might add.

That's not fair.

We went to some ********house camp called Rumbug or somethin' like that. It rained the whole time, and all the blokes had to sleep in wagons - the girls had nice, comfy beds with hot showers. We literally couldn't go outside to go to the toilet because it was outdoors 100m away. Pitch darkness too - not to mention spiders entering our wagons from the cracks.

One of my mates who is part of the army is moving to Canberra in a weeks time.
I am pretty sure he isn't looking forward to it, but a situation can only be as good as you let it.
If he's not looking forward to Canberra I'm betting he's in Baghdad at the moment

I lived in Canberra for 3 years... I actually loved the place... City living... with a country lifestyle... very relaxing.. very clean place. Not the sort of place you want to go if you like boozing it up and clubbing every weekend but as far as being a place to live its great. Gets a bit cold in the winter.... but I dont mind the cold... the summers can be a bit hot though.. even worse than Perth. Depends what you are going there to do... but I loved it. Its only a couple of hours drive from Sydney to.... which sucks the big one... if Canberra was as close to Melbourne as it is to Sydney I may still be living there.

Canberra is totally sterile. You never see any bird ******** on the streets in Canberra. That's because even the birds aren't real - there are public servants whose job it is to change the batteries on them.:p

Been there a few times, including spending the day there a few months ago. The roundabouts are alright, but then, I drive in Warrnambool (anyone who's driven there will understand - roundabout at every intersection in the 'CBD'), it's just that they're so bloody big - once I didn't even see I was coming into one and kinda forgot to give way. Oops. But the whole time I was there, I just felt I was in a big country 'city', but with no atmosphere. I was also there on a Saturday night, and there wasn't anybody - anywhere.

Ha no sh*t, I went there too. Must have been after you because the lads got comfy beds as well! :D I liked it. Pool, table tennis, abseiling, that adventure course with leeches in the water hahahaha.

As an expat Canberran I feel abliged to give it the two thumbs up.

I love it to bits.

If you need to know good places to eat/drink send me a pm and ill pass on the wisdom.

Ive only been there a couple of times, once hitchiking through-spent 3 days/2 nights, and once driving through just staying the night.

I actually really dig the place and find the circular design means you dont get lost, and if you do its easy enough and close enough to get back to the middle and start again:D

My problem was when leaving the city centre, that's when Id get disorientated. I loved the big wide and open roads, with little traffic. It is sterile but that's because it was specifically built, more so than any other capital cities. Needs people to want to live their, its just unfortunate it's in a no-mans land. Somewhere along the actual coast would've been much better. Say about Eden, beautiful valleys and National Parks nearby.

On the hitchin trip through I had a ball, walked into town and looking for a place to spend the night, I picked up a chick at the YMCA within about 20 mins:D went into town and had an awesome night with the locals, all 30 of em.

Was suprised there was nothing open after 10PM except for a few nightclubs and a Petrol Station, this on a Friday night. And nothing-not a thing-opened till about 10 the next morning.

Strange place, like a town from a Steven King novel, but I think Canberra's cool though dunno if Id ever want to live there.

I also heard years ago that Canberra was the local Aboriginal dialect for Big Boobs.. apparently after the two mountain tops to the south(I think) that can be seen from Canbera, and especially from Parliment House.

Probably untrue, but nice to think.

Canberra is aboriginal for 'Meeting place'
I think SaveFerriss is right, the literal translation is 'Meaty Bits' - but I can see where the popular misconception you have quoted comes from.
