Which one are you happiest with? Which do you think you will wind up being happiest with?

Could create a thread for the worst but that'd be too damn depressing

Schneider/Dempster for Meredith easily. Fact Dempster has been top 3 in B&F two years running and made All Australian side is unbelievable for what was the "steak-knives" in the trade.. Adam Schneider was crucial cog in our success in getting to where we did in 09/10. Also fact both are going play 100+ games for the club and Meredith played like 10 (if that!)

The Saad/Milera trade was a downgrade from pick 20 to 25?

These are amazing deals already. If Schneids had kicked straight in 2009 it would be no contest (given how well Boogie has played since then).

But that's a great list of recent ones.

(although gives me a chance to raise Craig Devonport (to Carlton) -> pick 19 -> Barry Hall (88 games) -> pick 13 -> Nick Dal Santo!!!)

Definitely Schneider dempster trade at this point but who knows how it will end, maister seems to look very good in my opinion and markworth has such potential.

some of our trades last year might surpass the dempster/schneider trade. did some research and effectively the following happened:

Goddard for Pick 13
Pick 12 for Lee, 25 and 46
Pick 13, 37, 57 for Hickey, 26 and 47
Pick 47 for Hyphen
Jamie Cripps and Pick 46 for 41 and 44

So effectively you can sum it up/merge it as follows:
Goddard (Pick 13), 37, 57 for Hickey, White, Hyphen
12 and Cripps for Lee, Wright, Murdoch, Saunders

where pick 12 and 13 could have netted the following players:
12: Jaksch
13: Lonergan
14: Corr
15: Garner
16: Thurlow
17: Simpson
18: Grundy
19: Kennedy
20: N/A
21: Broomhead
22: Hrovat
23: Towers
24: Paparone

37 and 57 netted Tanner Smith (didnt count broughton here because we didnt have the cap room for him anyway), Tim Sumner

46 and 47 netted Colledge, Membrey

the terry milera/saad/ross trade meant we passed on the following players (which needs to be taken into account):
20: Crozier
21: N/A (FS)
22: Bootsma
23: Newman (already in trouble with the law)
24: Schade

GWS also has an end of first round concession pick from trading pick 20 to freo, which i cant find out if and where it was used.

this trade is already a win!!! but how much depends on milera/ross and crozier.

GWS hasn't used it yet.

Who's to say we wouldn't have taken Ross at 20?

Also I deliberately didn't include last year's trades because A: It's too early to tell and B: They're too freaking convoluted

Anyway you look at it, losing Goddard for Pick 13 puts you so far behind its not even funny!

it makes it tough doesnt it. but i think there are other benefits from that outcome in terms of salary cap and our methodology moving fwd on max $/length

guess we'll have to wait and see.

dons might just have recruited a player for no reason. if cap, points or player sanctions are handed down.

No doubt, but in future when we look back at it we wont remember all finer details of why we let him go. Bit like why Swans let Dempster go, they just couldnt keep him under salary cap so was sacrificed.

Considering we could have lost him for nothing in previous years (and potentially nothing in the future if they scrap compensation) I'd say while we're behind at the moment, solid careers from Hickey and White could change that dramatically in the future.

As for the trade you can't got past Dempster and Schneider. Especially cos they're about to both notch up 100 games for us. Swapping Pick 26 for 200 quality games is a massive win. Much less getting >100 games from two players!

Do hope that we can say the Saad/Milera/Ross trade is the best in the future. Although it's already undoubtedly a stupidly good deal.

In that vein upgrading an unproven Irish rookie for picks 35 (Markworth) and 68 (Wilkes) is a pretty decent upgrade.

Similarly salvaging 37 and using it to land Newnes out of the stuff-up of drafting Lynch at 13 is handy.

Agreed - Newnes is going to be a beauty and Lynch......well I watched him Ade v St K NAB cup last weekend and he did not look good, (another Jon Peake special right there)!

At the moment Schneids/Dempster trade ahead of Saad/Milera/Ross trade but give it another year or so and it could well be the opposite.

Makes up for all the trades from 70's, 80's where we consistently lost out. Not to mention taking Carlton's sloppy seconds......

Bit hard to tell with some of the younger blokes, who are still trying to find their feet so I would have to say Schneider/Dempster by a long stretch for now. I think this trade could easily go down as one of the best of all time!

Yeah i gotta go Dempster & Schneiderman . Even though Dempster is often mentioned as the bonus 'Steak Knives' in the deal, they are bloody good steak knives and Schneids has been pretty handy as well.
But hopefully for all Saints fans Seb Ross or Newnes will end up being so freaking good that in a few years we will think one of those trades was the best one:):)

Schneids-Dempster was a fantastic trade, also worth remembering the full story. If we didn't make the trade we'd have picked up Jack Grimes and Dawson Simpson, as a result of making the trade we got Big Ben, Schneider and Dempster. Still ahead, but if Grimes could stay fit he'd be a mighty handy addition.

Why would we have picked Grimes and Simpson?
