I think it's now time to consider a reappointment
in the leadership department. Chris Grant has
been a great player, but we need a succession plan

Luke Darcy - Capt
Brad Johnson - VC
Rob Murphy - Deputy VC

There's been a few threads about this recently..

I don't like the idea of Darcy - seen him give away too many stupid 50s. Johnno seems to have a heart of red white and blue, but is he a captain type?
I think the club made a big mistake this year taking West out of the leadership group. He seems more 'captainesque' than the others. Also if Rawlings is happy and a good part of the club - think a bit of a new face might be reasonable in the leadership group (was it doc who suggested this previously??).
Of the youngsters - is Guido a long term option - he seems to have been a quiet improver this year, but it's really far more about leadership skills than how they're going at the moment, and that might be harder to judge.

I disagree with that.To me the only guy who jumps out at me as being capable of being one of the top skippers in the league is Darcy. He has all the hall marks of the great skippers.

*He is physical
*He lifts for big games
*He wants the responsibility in front of goal
*He has a bit of mongrel
*He is honest

Not that the other candidates arnt all those things but Darcy to me is just a stronger candidate. He gives off a feeling of strength and arrognace on the field that the others dont quite have.
As good as guys like Westy,Johnson and co are they are not the sort of players with the arrogance, strength and aggressive nature that Darcy has.Sure he has given away a few 50s but so did Carey. The way he handled the whole Nathan Brown saga impressed me aswell.

Hadn't thought of it like that. It is really a fine balance in the strength and arrogance line. Although comparing to another sport and another country is risky I will....!! For england rugby union - Johnson had it just right, Dallaglio is hopeless. Can't quite decide which Darcy is - but you have got me leaning more towards good rather than bad.

Yeah I know what you mean.I think Johnson and West would be good skippers and would lead by example but I couldnt see them being topline captains just because they play pretty run of the mill roles.Darcy to me is just such a confident and straight down the line sort of bloke.I reckon he would set some young blokes straight aswell.Has that touch of **** about him.Sorry to use that word but its the best way to get across what I mean.

Id love to see Johnno become captain he pours his heart and soul into the club and is a western suburbs boy, but i think Murph is the man for the job, he will be captain for 10 years , and by giving him the captaincy it will encourage him to stay with the club when other big offers come in for him.

I think that this year should have belonged to Brad Johnson. He should have been captain this year. Now I think that the opportunity and time have passed him by.

Its Darcy or Murphy for the job. Either of these two could inspire, they could talk openly to the team or the press. I'm sure they would do a very good job.

Most have talked about who the new captain should be, no-one has talked the fact that we are treating CHRIS GRANT with the outmost contempt by even fathoming that he should be replaced before he retires.

He represents the "heart and soul" of our football club.

If he is demoted from our leadership group pariticularily if its under the current hierarchy (rhode and co) it would be the most disgraceful decision i have ever seen a football club make.

To be honest based on the football departments recent track record, it wouldn't surprise me either.

As a supporter who has always been a signed up member, if Chris Grant was ever demoted whilst still playing, i would seriuosly consider re-joining.

Not becuase we are one of the most unsuccessful organisations in Australia, but becuase that would be a shore sign the club under its current regime is totally out of touch with the essence of Australian Rules Football

LSJII, I just think Chris is the best, I would never say anything bad about him, he has given so much to the club and I too would not want him to be replaced as Captain while he is still playing. My choice AFTER Chris retires would be Darcy but ONLY when he goes, not before.

The Club needs Grant as much now as it did in 1996. For the next year if not two he needs to play on and captain. Anyone disagree?
