Captain to replace Pendles, possibly in two years

How long has Scott Pendlebury got?
Probably as long as he wants. The champion midfielder will turn 32 in January and, given his form, could play for another two or three seasons. Another year in charge would give him the record for the most games as Collingwood captain, overtaking his coach Nathan Buckley's tally of 161.

Next in line:
It might depend on when Pendlebury relinquishes the role. If he steps down at the end of next year, the favourite would likely be vice-captain Steele Sidebottom (29 in January). But if it's two years down the track, fellow leadership group member Taylor Adams (26 in September) might be ready to assume the mantle.

Current leadership groups:

• C - Pendlebury
• VC - Sidebottom
• DVC - Adams, Howe, Dunn
• Emerging leaders - Grundy, Elliott, Treloar, Maynard, Moore and Langdon

Howe and Dunn can be discounted due to age; if Pendlebury's captain for another 2 years I'd add Sidebottom and Elliott to that list. Adams, Langdon, Treloar and Grundy will be 27 or 28 at that time, which barring a Buckley/Clement scenario is about as old as I'd want to go. Maynard and Moore would be in the ideal age range at 24/25.

That said I'd go Adams; he looks to be a captain in the making and I prefer the Maxwell or Burns style captain who throw themselves at the footy. If Maynard takes his game to the next level over the next couple of seasons he could overtake Adams though.

Only thing about Adams is that as earnest as he is, he always sounds rather boring. He can lead by onfield deeds, but wouldn't the players want someone who doesn't speak in monotones?:
