I am looking at getting a new car, and I am getting quotes online for insurance. As I am under 25 these quotes are ridiculously high!!

Like up to $2500 a year. This car is only a 1994 Ford so it isn't exactly amazing stuff.

Is there any way I can get it cheaper than that. Any cheap insurers? Any loop holes? I could put my dad down on my rego as an owner then put him down as another driver on my Insurance. And that was my premium drops to around $550.

Is that the wya to go? Does that work alright?

What's that got to do with anything? Who said I don't have insurance?

As I was told when I first started driving: "If you can't afford insurance, you cant afford to drive".

Why you feel the need to purchase a car that would require $2500PA in insurance premiums?

I am driving now mate. And I have 3rd party insurance (which is still a rip off).

$2500PA is because I am under 25 and MALE. And that is through AAMI. Through NRMA I can get it for around $1200 but thats still a lot of money. I was asking to see if anyone had better options, not to critisise me and tell me I don't have enough money to drive a car.

That amount of money has nothing to do with the car, it is to do with me being 19 and Male.

I hear ya mate, my old magna's just died in the arse so I'm picking up a VN Series 2 Commy and the finance conditions state I must get comprehensive insurance. Being under 25 and male is the worst thing to be in this situation, unfortunately there aren't that many good options around. I'm still looking myself as well so any constructive input on this thread would be doubly appreciated.

Of course it is to do with the value of the car. Naturally you are going to pay more for insurance at your age, but you cannot tell me they are going to charge you $2500 to insure a car that is valued around thr price of insurance. Criticise? Hardly criticism, but you are whinging. The cost involved with driving a vehicle takes a fair chunk out of your wages, if you cannot afford it, then look at other options.

What is the value of the vehicle you are looking at?

It is a Ford Falcon 1994 Station Wagon.

Selling price $9990, but with trade in I will get it for around $8990 (and I did the quote on that price).

Hardly anything big.

Honeslty there is no other option than bite the bullet and take the shafting. We've all been in the situation of driving at that age and they rip you off but take a look around at the way your mates drive and see the reason why insurance is so pricey for males of that age.

The only other option than not paying thos exorbitant premiums is to drive without insurance and good luck if you can tolerate bankruptcy.

The only thing to make it less painful is to find an insurer that will let you pay fortnightly, it may cost slightly more than a yearly bill but it's better than copping it all in one hit.

Or take a bus.

Lower your expectations. You can pick up a reliable car around the $3000-$4000 mark, surely? Insurance on a 4 cylinder is even cheaper. Get the beast when you turn 25 and don't have to pay outrageous premiums.

I probably could pick one up for that value. I just saw this one as a good deal. Either way I will assess my options. I can afford the insurance, I was just seeing if there was any cheaper ones, or cheaper ways to do it.

If there isn't then so be it.

(BTW I won't be going with AAMI at $2500)

The insurance cost isn't just to do with your cars value. What you might potentially run into could be worth far more.

Third party is usually standard across the board IIRC, but certainly comprehensive is tied to the value of the vehicle.

Get a cheaper car, run with third party, fire and theft and drive carefully.

Depends what you want a car for; transport or impressing other people.

I suppose it all depends on the car you're driving etc.

I'm with RACV and I'm paying around $700 (as opposed to over 1000k) per year for full comp. and it keeps decreasing. I was told the reason why I'm paying cheap is because my mum was listed as an additional driver for my car, and she is with RACV and has rating one.

Don't go with FAI, I heard you can pay up to $3000 for full comp.

I want the car to travel long distances as I live in Western NSW. Therefore I want reliability. My current car cannot (and has not) do that for me.

Im in the same boat Luke, being under 25 and Male is hurting me when trying to look for insurance

If anyone has any ideas on cheap places (the best i got was $1200/year with NRMA)

Just bought a Ford falcon sedan ED 1994 for $6990. 187,00k's.

Full insurance $340 (i'm 28) and live in the country. Got finance to pay that as well.

Look around. In todays HS there is a ex Taxi 94 ford dual fuel for $ 3500. Engine would be tired but the money you save on fuel could be put aside for a newer engine? maybe.

Not sure if AAMI still have there skilled driving course that also brings down insurance.

The car I am after is a Ford Falcon 1994 with only 104000 kms.

And for $8990 thats a bargain. That is why I am going after that rather than get an old Taxi like you suggest.

Hint:

Shop around.

I swith car insurance companies EVERY year. Yes, EVERY year. I am currently with CGU. Last year I was with AAMI and before that RACV.

When your insurance is due, ring around the 6 or 7 insurance companies and get a quote. Then go with the cheapest. There is a massive difference. Some companies that are desperate for business will sell insurance far cheaper than their rivals. One year, I had 6 quotes and they ranged from $650, to $1,800.

Shop around. It's easy, and you won't regret it.
