Kangaroos' legend Wayne Carey has re-ignited his war of words with current coach Dean Laidley after slamming Laidley's behaviour following the Roos' humiliating preliminary final exit at the hands of Port Adelaide on Saturday.

Carey, who called for Laidley to be replaced as coach by the club's 1990 Coleman Medalist and Sydney assistant coach John Longmire even before the season began, said he could not believe Laidley singled two young players - Hamish McIntosh and Andrew Swallow - out for criticism following the loss to Port.

"That was really disappointing," Carey, the Roos' 1996 and 1999 premiership captain, said on Channel Nine's Sunday Footy Show.

"As (former premiership coach) Robert Walls said during the call, he (Laidley) should have just let things settle down before he made any of those types of comments."

"Plus it's a team performance and you don't blame it on two young blokes that have had good years after the whole team was pretty disappointing."
Laidley singled McIntosh and Swallow out after the game, saying he was not going to 'sweep their performance under the carpet.'

"I will be after them during the pre-season," he said of Swallow and McIntosh.

Former Richmond coach Danny Frawley - whose team lost the 2001 preliminary final in similar circumstances in Brisbane - agreed with Carey, when asked about Laidley's comments on the Sunday Footy Show.

"I didn't say much at all (after 2001)," he said.

"The emotions after the game, you want to vent your spleen but Dean would love to have those words over again."

"I just said boys we will have a chat on Tuesday and for two young guys to bear the brunt of the criticism is a bit too much for my liking."

Laidley's outburst further muddies the Kangaroos' coaching picture for next year with Laidley refusing to say after the game whether he would sign a new deal to stay with the club, given he is out of contract at the end of this year.

And will this latest heavy finals defeat - the Roos have now lost three finals under Laidley by an average of 93 points in the past three seasons - hurt his chances of getting a new contract.

And if Laidley does not sign a new deal or is not offered one, will he then emerge as a candidate to coach Essendon - which is still yet to fill the vacancy caused by the shock sacking of Kevin Sheedy.

Didn't take long for Carey to open his mouth did it?

getting ready for the bombardment of people critisizing Carey......

This is 100% correct, you dont single out the young blockes, they have no finals experience hee should have blamed the Older croud, the Leadership group.

As well chronicled in another thread on this I think Laidley's comments were very poor. Carey is right here. Laidley should not have singled out a couple of the kids. But this is hardly a sacking offence - just poorly chosen words from a shattered coach immediately after the game.

Well I'm going to upset your apple cart duckfan, and hop into that bell end Spud Frawley. Who gives a toss what you did after your Preliminary Final loss, arseclown... you stunk it up from then onward so whatever you did was clearly wrong.

Who really gives a shit what Carey thinks.

Really why becuase he is right you dont give a shit anymore?

I said that last time but you kept arguing. Got yourslef into a corner and know that he is right but cant admit it?

ok... Do you agree that Dean shouldnt have single out the Youngsters?

I wonder what most of the guys on BF say now that he is correct, they all seemed to critize him when he said words in the past, lets see if anyone can say he is right, i know that DawinRoo Cant.

If he doesn't re sign we should be going after Sheedy. Perfect fit for the club. Strong personality, massive respect, attract sponsors as well as members. Also would instill a lot of confidence in the keep North at North supporters.

Yer but we would need some serious cash to get him.

So McIntosh and Swallow have stellar seasons in 2008 and recall the public berating as the motivating factor to reassess their footy & suddenly Laids is a friggin' genius.

And whoever takes coaching advice from Frawley should hang up the clipboard, or better yet go and coach Carlton.

Lol true.

Have'nt agreed with alot of what Carey has said this year , but he is right on this occasion ,and i'm sure Laidley, after he has cooled down would agree that you don't let 2 kids hang out to dry after a performance like that.

Who really gives a shit what Carey thinks.

I agree.
Why the firetruck do we have a Carey thread on here every week?
That's why i left TSK yet the same crap get puts on here.

Who really cares what ******* Wayne Carey says?
His track record is very ordinary this year.

Dean got us into a preliminary final without a full forward or a fullback. He made some blunders but who doesn't?

Denis got us into 7 prelims yet only won 3 of them.
Cut Dean some slack.

No its not because he is right or not. Its just that his opinion doesnt matter to me.

I dont care what anyone in the media thinks of North Melbourne.

At least Dean is passionate and is hurting like everyone, he probably shouldnt have said what he did but gees the players arent babies they should just take it as it was a couple of lines from a disappointed coach. Bloody media making something out of nothing as usual. I bet if the players read or listened to North supporters during the game or after it hear they would have heard much worse and to be honest all the players need to just cop it sweet but come back stronger for it. Its not what u learn from winning its how u comeback from disappointment ie loss to Geelong , defeat of the Hawks. We just needed another double chance as a famous North coach once said "if we played that game again the result would have been different :D" Maybe if we could play again next week we would win ;)

Terrible journalism. What is it with footy writers trying to create sensationalism. Duck going off half cocked is par for the course and like everyone else on these boards, he probably only read the presser account in the paper, not heard it. He named some name, said they'd been disappointing today, BUT had made huge strides and were the reason we got to a prelim. Hardly a shalacking of younger players.

I heard what Dean said, and I don't think it was as bad as portrayed. He said that some of the young guys who had been good this season were not good against Port, and he named them. He was not speaking out of anger, and it was about 10 seconds in a longish press conference. It's getting way more attention than it deserves. To my mind, he singled out guys who will be leaders at the club one day, and part of leadership is about learning to take responsibility. He was not hysterical or finger pointing, but he was firm.

There is a delicious irony in Carey criticising Dean for taking pot shots. I mean really.

Then why did you hit down so hard on him earlier in the year when i was saying who cares what he says? i ageed he was in the wrong but said who cares what he says, now he is in the right and you back off.

So if on Footy Classified tonight he said something bad about Laidley you wouldnt comment?

I think whoever wrote this article is after brownie points with their editor. I saw the footy show i would not take what Carey said as an attack but rather an observation/opinion.
