i was just reading up on the official venues, and was a bit shocked to see that a few stadiums were built with financial aid from the people's republic of china (mainland) and the republic of china (taiwan). does anyone know WHY exactly this happened? another stadium was constructed with the financial aid of the indian government, but that kinda makes sense...

any ideas on this one?

They are 3rd world countries and lack cash but as from next summer, cricket will be China's official summer sport. One suspects that these 'gifts' of stadiums as I saw described in the articles is partly to curry favour with the powers that be to expedite their entry into the associate level of cricket. Evidently they love cricket up there and jealously watch the amount of money being made by their Asian cousins.
I also know that a lot of Indian coaches have gone up their to lend their expertise to their cricket development.

thanks for that...

my mind went elsewhere! i remembered reading somewhere that a caribbean country recognised taiwan's independance, and so china played the 'oneupmanship' card and tried to curry some sort of favour with that...heh, i didn't for one second expect that!!!

for real? chinese people getting into the cricket? all the chinese people i've come across have never even heard of it!!! that's awesome news! i hope it takes off there...

thanks for the answers...

Not only that but if you watched the Windies last year at home (Odi's V Zim and India and 3 tests V India) you'd notice that a lot of Chinese workers were used to build the stadiums, Sabina Park in particular and you can't say they haven't done a good job, should have got them to wembley instead of those Aussies, Multiplex.

I think that this has something more to do with China & Taiwan trying to create voting blocks within the United Nations, and with China trying to limit the number of countries that recognise Taiwan as an independent, sovriegn state.

So, both govenments, wanted to curry thier favour by helping to build sports stadiums for Grenada, St Kitts & Nevis, etc., for the World Cup so that China & Taiwan can continue thier "*** for tat" diplomatic war between the two nations.

That's why China & Taiwan offered to build these staduims free of charge, in order to fight a greater diplomatic battle.
