Opinion Carl vs Coll - Which Midfield is better?

Without sounding biased, I think Collingwood's midfield is better. I think we've got a little bit more depth than the Blues beyond our top guys in that area as well. Carlton's midfield is obviously quite good though, and I think Kade Simpson is a pretty underrated player, and has been more 'Fab Four'-worthy than Nick Stevens this season.

... Tries to take off tinted glasses ... :p
Close one but I think on current form Collingwood's midfield probably just shades Carlton's.

Swanny has taken his game to a new level and is arguably a better player than Judd at this point. Carlton have two gun 200+ gamers in Gibbs and Murphy but they are still young and developing and I'd take the poise and class of Didak and Davis in a big match any day.

Pendles is developing nicely but still sometimes hesitant to take a few risks and opts for the 'safe' option a little too much IMO.

I don't really rate Simpson though, and it looks like age is starting to catch up to OB and Stevens.

Damon makes a good point in that Collingwood seem to have more depth as well, its early days yet but the performances of Wellingham, Sidebottom and especially Beams has been very encouraging this year

Can't disagree with much of what's been said. At this stage I'd go with our midfield. Didak, Davis and Swan are all in their prime and Pendlebury is a young but established star who will keep improving for a while yet. O'Bree can't have a huge amount of footy left in him but is still contributing. Clearly lacks the polish of the others though, and once Beams builds that solid body up further to be able withstand 4 quarter footy he's the prime candidate to take that position.

Judd is an absolute gem but is not quite firing on all cylinders this year. Gibbs and Murphy aren't quite there yet but are safe bets to play a lot of quality football. Simpson I just haven't seen enough of.

I see two main differences: One is that Stevens is clearly struggling and Scotland's not the player he was right now.

The other is the depth of rotation that the Pies have. Wellingham, Thomas, Johnson, McCarthy, Beams and Sidebottom are all choices that have and/or will be used this year, in a top 4 side. McCarthy is getting back to fitness and Malthouse rates him highly (as do I) so he may well become part of the midfield/forward rotation before the end of this year. All are legitimate options in a top 4 side, which suits our style of footy. As with Simpson I don't know enough about Carlton's reserves to comment.

In 2 years time it will be interesting to revisit this one to see how the youngsters from both sides have come on and who they've replaced.

Judd the obvious super star of those listed.

Collingwood's is currently better, and looks to be better in the future too, with much more depth. Pendles, Swan, Didak, Davis can be absolute stars at times. Add Beams, Sidebottom, McCarthy, Wellingham, Thomas as rotations and things are looking very good at Pie land.

What is worrying is lack of a good Ruckman, and a crash and bash forward. Fingers crossed Dawes is our man for the forward line though.

Going on stats this year alone.
Collingwoods by a mile.
Swan is the best one out of the 8 players names (remember going on this year alone).

In fact Carlton have just the 1 in the top 5 IMO

Carlton midfield is the better.
On a few points raised by others , someone said they don't rate Kade Simpson ,your joking aren't you? Kade Simpson record against Collingwood over the years is impressive and is playing good footy this year.
Why isn't Carrazzo on the list? Some might laugh at that , but the guy is a B&F winner and in the 4 games against Collingwood in 07 & 08 he polled in 3of the 4 games against them.
With Nick Stevens to early to write him off , look at his game on the weekend , makes Carlton look better with his great disposal.
Yes Swan might lead the league in Disposal but Judd leads it in contested ball and Swan delivers more clangers.

Where i think Collingwood is better . Didak and Davis are listed in top midfield, they don't scare me when they are in the midfield, its when Davis and Didak are playing in the foward line and you add that to medhurst , cloke and a deadly Anthony thats alot of weapons to cover up foward

Problem with this is that we're not a four player midfield. We're more like a 6-8 player midfield whereas Carlton are a bit more traditional. Given they flogged us in the first game and we flogged them in the second I'd say both are about even.

Carltons are more hyped and feted as one of the best in the comp but Judd is forced to do a lot of the work and Murphy has only this season climbed down off Juddy's back. The rest are still resting comfortably on his shoulders. Colingwood's isnt as talented supposedly but they are far more consistent and work as a unit far better than the Blues. The Woods by quite a bit.

Going by this year id rate them in order of:

1. Swan
2. Judd
3. Davis
4. Pendlebury
5. Murphy
6. Didak
7. Gibbs
8. Simpson
9. O'bree
10. Stevens

1. Swan
2. Judd
3. Gibbs
4. Murphy
5. Pendlebury
6. Davis (more for his work up forward)
7. Didak
8. Simpson
9. Stevens
10. Carrazzo

A little different but I think the Baggers have you covered if we meet in the finals.

Like you had us covered two weeks ago when our midfield smashed yours. Smashed might not be the right word, more like humiliated.

Pendlebury is better then Murphy and Gibbs, two weeks ago proved that. Murphy and Gibbs spent all night turning it over when under pressure, whilst Pendlebury was sublime with his disposal.

Gibbs number 3? Are you on crack?

Pendlebury and Murphy are far ahead of him, I'd say Pendlebury has been better per game, but Murphy hasn't missed any from memory so he should take number 3. Then Pendlebury, then Davis, then Gibbs, then Didak [despite his missed games]. I would probably have Beams ahead of Carrazzo too, and hell, given how soft Stevens is, I'll put Beams ahead of him too! Obree is ahead of Carrazzo too.

Personally, this is how I see it.

1. Swan
2. Judd
3. Murphy
4. Pendlebury
5. Gibbs
6. Davis
7. Didak
8. Simpson
9. O'Bree
10. Stevens

Swan having a phenomenal year, him and Juddy neck-and-neck, honours going to Swan for consistency and optimal output.

Murphy and Pendlebury both really consolidating form of previous years, Murph edges it here for goal scoring ability basically, both very even at this stage.

Gibbs pips Davis for consistency, and the fact Davis hasn't been exclusively in the centre - These are, for mine, the most contentious two spots.

Didak clearly ahead of the rest, Simpson typical reliable workman-like season, like O'Bree, but probably more influential than the Pie.

Steven's rounds out the list for playing one good game when his ass is on the line, and barely turning up otherwise.

Yes. But he's a ****ing star.

Save for his injured period, I'd argue that he's been better than everyone at Carlton. Well, that is if you can get past the name factor associated with rating Chris Judd.
Flew straight over your head

But seriously, "Name factor". Chris Judd's best two games last year came against your mob, you copped nigh-on the full force of him, and you still drop shit like that. Get serious.

Didak's output pales in comparison to that of Murphy and Judd, and is more comparable to the Gibblet, but they play different roles, and Didak isn't, and never has really been strictly a midfielder.
