Coach Carlton and Michael Voss - where to now

“Michael Voss is made to coach the Carlton Football Club – a coach of great intellect, who inspires those around him and every Carlton person to not just hope, but believe in what is possible if we remain committed and true to who we are, together."

Carlton press release, February 2024.

Long may he reign.

What I love about Carlton fans is they keep falling into the trap of pinning all their hopes on the next ‘messiah’.

Today it’s G Wright. Just like it was Brian Cook a few years ago.

Not only is he going to be the CEO, but apparently will also take on the role of list manager.

Never learn the Blues. Rinse and repeat….

This thread is about Voss, not the Pies.

If the Pies were screwed or not, it makes 0 difference.
It’s important for their fans to cling to, because apparently, Wright turned things around for us.

I doubt they fully understand the reality of the situation.

Reality is Collingwood have managed their list much better than Carlton. They don't sign many fat long term deals and the Pies are astute traders.

Wright had alot to do with those policies and frameworks.

It looks like from the outside the Carlton old boys arrogance is still alive and flourishing at the Blues. Players, staff and Carlton power brokers need to stop feeding off that outdated club history and either start delivering or get others in who will.

They got Cook in as the messiah.
But still make the same mistakes.

Where I’m confused in all this is with Wright’s role. He wasn’t the CEO at Collingwood and that was the role he wanted. So, he was basically the football manager and was a part of list management. Are Carlton looking for him to bring in a new football manager to make the calls on coach and list?

CEO doesn’t do that.
The Pies were already in the process of clearing out high long term contracts. Prior to Wright commencing, we got Treloar, Stephenson and another big contract (to Hawthorn, his name escaped me). Wright came in the following year and cleared out Grundy and made the call on Buckley.

One thing about Wright, he doesn’t mess around when it comes to trading. He generally gets most of his trading done early.

But again, that’s the role of the football manager and list manager. Is Wright going to be all 3? CEO is a big job. Can’t possibly do all 3 properly. Who he brings in for those other roles will be critical.

But overall, we know the issue is a bigger one. Will be interesting to see how long he lasts having to deal with it.

Can’t argue with this, all valid points

Problems are bigger than just Voss

Expect he’ll be coaching at start of next season.

Will be gone at the bye if blues have a bad start to the season

Jeez it’s pretty grim stuff. They clearly don’t want him and asked around, including a current rival coach, and nobody wanted the job… so they “recommitted” to him.

And then it inevitably gets out.

Not the most auspicious of starts for the latest messiah in Wright.

If ur believing anything Sam McClure has written or said recently you need to get some help.

I mean its not like he’s claiming JFK, Hitler and Elvis are still alive and were behind 9/11…

He’s saying Carlton recently tried to recruit a different coach and couldn’t. Not exactly a shocking turn of events.

Essendon and its fans seem to understand where they are at
They acknowledge and applaud the efforts where due but acknowledge where they are in the rebuild

Carlton fans don't seem to have adjusted their expectations to reality
Both their rebuilds are like the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, been rebuilding forever with no signs it'll be completed anytime soon. Can understand if they keep seeing mirages everywhere.

Agree, McClure is a nerd who comes up with click bait to make him feel that he’s in the loop

Blues will stick with Voss, they have their sights set on the players and want to see culture change across the whole club

Today’s game had the players looking more committed, better effort.

With Voss backed in, and Gov unlikely to make his game trigger, a message is being sent to the players
