Carlton coach wants Fevola tackling

Carlton coach Brett Ratten says he would rather spearhead Brendan Fevola laid 100 tackles, rather than kicked 100 goals for the year.

Fevola has booted 22 goals in the Blues' last three games, and - along with Hawthorn's Lance Franklin - is on track to reach three figures by season's end.

But Ratten said he wanted Fevola to continue to work hard when he has not got the ball, by applying defensive pressure in the forward line.

"I just want Fev to have 100 tackles not 100 goals," Ratten said.

Ratten highlighted Fevola's effort to chase down Melbourne's Nathan Jones almost to the wing last Sunday, a play that saw his spearhead eventually feed a handball to Cameron Cloke, who kicked it to Brad Fisher for a goal.

Fevola was also praised for his strong tackle on Collingwood's Harry O'Brien the previous week that wrenched the ball free.

He then shot a handball over the top for teammate Shaun Grigg to seal the win for the Blues against their arch-rivals.

"That's the stuff we want to see," Ratten said.

"We've seen it two weeks in a row and we want that to continue."

While initially brushing off suggestions Fevola should be rewarded with a long-term contract, Ratten hinted he wanted his star forward to be a Blue while he was coach at the club.

"He looks pretty good up there, I'd rather him in the team than out of the team," Ratten said.

"We'll just wait and see, let the football do the talking, we'll just concentrate on what we have to do as a team."

Ratten said Fevola's current form did not warrant a re-think on him being sacked if he had another alcohol-related misdemeanour.

What does everyone think about this? Fev's last few weeks he has shown how great a player he can be, with his second and third efforts being fantastic. Does he have a big enough tank to go hard like that all the time without it preventing him from kicking goals? I know he has done it for 3 weeks in a row, but can he go even further with his chasing and tackling?

hope so Even Fev said on the footy Show he dosn't care about the 100 goals as Long as Carlton keeps kicking goals :)
keep this up lets show all other 15 Clubs we mean Business and we are no
longer Easy Beaters :thumbsu:

Think if Fev puts all his concentration into playing good footy that he will have plenty of energy to tackle. I believe he wastes alot of emotional energy in staging for frees. Even on the weekend he did it a few times. He is a great talent and if he keeps getting serious about being the best footballer he can be he will produce even more than he has in the past 3 weeks imo.

For all those confused by the muppets at The Age, the game is at the MCG not TD as reported in that story on Realfooty.

While in a correcting mood, I am disappointed to see that the equivalent story on the Carlton FC homepage suggests that Bruce Gibbs will be returning to the side this weekend.

I reckon' this is fair enough.

If Fevola tackles and goes in and gets the ball, goals will still come to him. Makes sence to have him kicking and setting up goals in pack situations than kicking goals from set shots all the time (a very predictable tactic after a while, as we've seen opp. teams catch on many times before!).

What do I think of it? I think there were 2 times where Fev was talking to the umpire while the contest continued right behind him.

But I still think he's great and is almost making the most of his talent.
