With Docherty back and a more mature midfield, Jones will be a lot better player and still only 29 in 2020.
Unless Byrne become chronically injured he'll be in this squad as a 25 year old.
Macreadie just needs opportunity and he'll likely be our CHB for years to come.

We have all of 2018's trades & FA's
We have all of 2019's trades & FA's
We have more than one good pick in 2018.
We'll have high picks in 2019.

Lots can and will change to that which has been put forward here.

Totally agree.

The other point I'll make is I reckon around 30 of our list is set, looks good and are the future. Never been more confident.

Even if we add another 14 to our list in next 2 years and only 7 make it we have a damn good list that can challenge

Realistically if you look at our so called recycled players, do you feel they were recruited for our top side or for depth? O'Shea, Mullet, Lobbe, Shaw, Lamb Garlett, ASOS, they were all recruited as depth for our developing VFL side. We didn't know we were going to lose Doc, Willo, Marchbank, Pickett. Injuries have pushed these guys into the frontline and credit to them for what they are doing but they struggle in the top tier of players.

The only place we failed in the draft was to replace Gibbs with a mature aged recruit.

With Gibbs I think the hope was that between Cripps & Ed playing, Kreuz & Doc flying and in career best form, a fit Kennedy & Lang joining our midfield plus a(nother) preseason & some natural progression into SPS, Fisher & Cuningham that we'd be able to cover his loss through the middle.

Similar progression from Charlie, Willo, Pickett, Weitering, Marchbank, Plowman, Harry, Byrne, Jack & Macreadie would also make a difference. Then we add some pretty handy draft picks on top...

At the end of the trade period I wasn't worried about our 2018 on field performances in the AG (after Gibbs) era.

Unfortunately what looked alright on paper 6 or 7 months ago is a far cry from our current situation, we've been decimated by injury and nothing is following the script. I guess, like all good stories, there's got to be a bit of hardship and drama to be overcome to make the ending worthwhile... can you imagine if Andy Dufresne was found not guilty? I like to think we've got our own Marylyn poster up now and that rock hammer is looking pretty worn down...

Revenge of the Lloyd on fox footy.

Marc Murphy should leave for success like Gibbs is what he has written pretty much.

He said the same on Footy Classified.

Meh ..... its just someone's opinion that could be feasible or not going to happen, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

And I'm not going to lose any sleep over Robbo, Whately & Wallsy's comments either. All commentators swing from love to hate based on the weekend's results and constantly contradict themselves many many times.

Just realised he didn't write it... It was quoting him...

Credit to SEN, this ain't too bad and is a welcome change to all the "they've been rebuilding for 15 years!" and "worst team eva! sakc Bolton!" kind of drivel that's floating around everywhere else.

Filling the blanks and updating it a touch using current listed players...

FB: Marchbank, Weitering, Plowman
HB: Docherty, Macreadie, Williamson
C: Petrevski-Seton, Cripps, O'Brien
HF: Cuningham, C Curnow, Lang
FF: Pickett, McKay, Garlett?
FOL: Kreuzer, Dow, Fisher
INT: Murphy, E Curnow, Kennedy, Byrne/Silvagni/Polson/De Koning/Schumacher/Wright?

I'm reasonably happy with that. Not sure Murph will still be a starting in the square, and reckon O'Brien has to be on a wing by then. Added Macradie at CHB, Cuningham at HFF and Garlett in a pocket to fill the gaps. Obviously there will be probably another 1 or 2 top 10 draft picks that join us in the next couple of years, maybe a FA/Trade or two, but there's a decent base of a squad to build around.

I wonder where they got that idea from ??

Any supporter or analyst with a tiny but of nous could come up with a future best 22 by looking at our list.

Hadn’t realised that Carlton had appointed Liam Pickering as it’s new Chairman of Selectors.

Now THAT is a bit troubling.

Why are they asking him? Can he say that? Is it all good, nothing to see here?

Not hugely infatuated with player managers being high profile, and even less infatuated with them attempting to influence player selection.

Yep, even I started a thread on our 'list within a list'.

Can't be too hard :D

Realistically, anyone who is in AFL recruitment to recruit VFL players needs to be ****ing fired.

Similarly, anyone who thought Shaw, Mullett and O'Shea were good AFL depth should be ****ing fired.

Sakc SOS?
I think he had a strategy to hold some list spots, and it would seem he fielded too much advice from Josh Fraser with where to go for depth.

All of the kids I've nominated have fairly mature bodies, so we would have been doing little more than opening up some growth potential on our list, and we still could have selected O'Shea.

Basically:

Banfield for Mullett
Murphy for Shaw
Amartey for JGM.

Yeah I completely agree re: Mullett, Shaw, O'Shea.

SOS is gonna make some mistakes. Let's hope he learns from them.

This wont be a popular view but so be it

Weitering has been mismanaged by Carlton.

I've previously said (ironically) in reply to the chorus of naysayers about Weitering - lets trade him to Geelong or Hawthorn for a late second round pick - where they would promptly make him their #1 intercept marking and rebounding kicking defender and he would be AA for the next 10 years.

Why do I say mismanaged ? because he has been set up to fail firstly playing him as a forward. then bringing him back very early from a serious shoulder injury. then making him accountable for #1 big body defender - and depriving him of chance to play his natural game as an intercept marking and rebound kicking defender.

Carlton is wasting Weitering in order to get something out of Plowman and Marchbank and make up for Jones and inadequacies.

I'd be playing Jones and Rowe as the bigger bodied defenders and Weitering as the intercept marking defender and #1 rebound kick - and making Marchbank/Plowman much more accountable. Let Plowman and Marchbank fight for a position against Williamson and McCreadie - both of whom will offer more for longer imo.
