Think it just needs to be simplified. Less commentators per game. Make it less of as old boys club and we’ll see improvements.

AFL should be more worried. They’re trying to grow the game and for the life of me I can’t see how anyone could get into AFL with the quality of commentary we currently have.

I got into the NFL years ago and fairly quickly. Two man commentary teams. Analysis and play calling. Made it so easy to get into.

Plenty of play clock downtime there, so they can afford to have a slower cadence, and can orchestrate some pretty great replay packages.

2+2 works for the AFL, but they need to work harder to find a better flow, instead of having these half-wit ex-players riding shotgun and offering nothing while ramping the jocularity of it up to 11.

I dont think they go THAT far. And that means any action the club takes will be taken as us having a whinge. The club cant turn around and say why dont you write about brisbane or gold coast.

Yes the slower play clock certainly helps massively. Not going to discount that. Still think the Afl requires a neater and simpler system. The whole organisation has forgotten to keep it simple.

AFL would do well to look at the commentators, reckon the viewers have started turning off about the time Dennis Commetti called it a day. Now, there is no one leading the way or setting a decent standard.

The sheer amount of advertising, especially gambling related advertising, is also a big turn off.

Reckon that is two areas that are much more likely to turn me off games, than the teams playing or the score line.

Maybe some criticism is misdirected, but it's still them doing the shit job. Whether it's on order from higher or not is kind of irrelevant to me as the consumer of their garbage.

In relation to your second point/question - I think it's elements of both, but ultimately the responsibility of the broadcasters. They set the bar for what is acceptable and determine the tone. If BT's horseshit shenanigans weren't either accepted or encouraged by his employers, he wouldn't be doing it. As you said - they get paid to do this job and if they aren't doing it well they'll be turfed.

It was this sort of garbage that got (I think) Hutchy fired from 3AW many years ago - I think he may have been producing the Rex Hunt footy program and the amount of rubbish - in-jokes, singing, cryptic nicknames, screaming, laughing like schoolboys etc) that went on during the call was mind boggling - it took a wave of complaints from listeners stating they just couldn't understand what was happening on the field any longer - before management did something - R Walls & T Shaw were two of the culprits - before his untimely death I recall how hard Clinton Grybas had to work just to keep some semblance of professionalism in the call - it was diabolical and the stuff coming out of 7 currently is heading the same way

Facts seem like to elude when it come to Carlton. Juddy asking for them leads to panic.

I agreed with Lloyd’s call re: Liam Jones being off at start of third term it was a mistake.
