Going back to the Schmurph podcast, I found the insight fascinating. Really explains why he seemed to fall away physically massively towards the end of his career. I always kind of defended him in that respect saying it was injuries from earlier in his career but I had no idea about the specifics. And people call him soft santarolleyes.gif

Also found it interesting that he suggested he believed he was slow and not a great runner. I always thought his running, speed, quickness and 4th qtr, was excellent.

He was quick but not fast. He mentions he had a good first step or side step. quickness is an undervalued attribute.
He certainly wasn't the most gifted athlete though.

What i also found interesting was the fact that he wasnt rated so highly in juniors.
Mind you, that does come up a bit with players now that i think about it.

I often noticed Murph late in games contributing in winning a few close games with his gut running linking up setting up play .

Watching games I’ve always thought it was his injuries that stopped him post mid twenties.

I rated him a lot early. What I personally don’t like about the Murphy story is that he banked very high salaries for another 5+ years while not performing via chasing/tackling to the required midfield requirement…he ‘escorted’ his opponent forward due to his injuries. This led to the Carlton image of one way runners.

Judd could of easily milked more money but chose a decent option when faced with his near future. I think Murphy should have at the age of 28-30 given it away allowing Carlton to use the resources to find a combative two way running midfielder. So I agree Murphy wasn’t a soft player but I do think he milked Carlton for every cent given our poor list. Some would say fair payment for his injuries.

I know this will be unpopular opinion. I would have not renewed him a lot earlier to set a harder tone at Carlton.

Considering that Murph won our best and fairest in 2017 as a 30 year old and averaged over 25 touches a game as a 31 and 32 year old I suspect that your opinion would be best categorised as incorrect as opposed to unpopular.

Also worth considering that he knocked back an offer of more money and potential success to go to Geelong late in his career to remain a one club player. He probably deserves better than this and some "harder tone" rubbish.

I agree.

I reckon a lot of the Murphy angst stems from the other two #1 picks of Murph's era - Gibbs and Special K.

Gibbs' best was sublime, yet...we all wanted so much more. He rarely changed the outcome of a game.

He really didn't appear (on most occasions) to want it enough tbh.

Special K - often injured, rarely got a real run at it...

2016 and 2017 he had his best numbers but by then, we were so lacking as a team...

100% agree, need to also add his leadership to the group in those hard years with kids watching his work ethic at training all unseen positives.

Was a great club man who played 300 games for Carlton, never dropped his head and really hope he is remembered in the right light.

I reckon it stems from we werent good enough on the field year in year out and Murphy was just an easy target to malign...period

Did Carlton actually say anywhere that she was divisive?

There were plenty of rumours of division in the team last year though and Harrington for one, was frustrated at times.

Harris for her part didn't look like she wanted to be there.

A united team is well worth losing some talent here and there.

Did some one say Sam Walsh highlights please fo my NY pressie? 😀😊🎁
