Analysis Carlton list history & rebuilding comparisons

Remove this Banner Ad

There has been a lot of discussion as to the history of Carlton's list problems, where it went wrong, to top up or not to top up, whether to play the youngsters before they are ready and gaps in our age profile over the years.

I am in the process of compiling stats on the breakdown of our list as far as age profile, who we have been games into and what other teams have been doing in their rebuilds.

I intend to fill in the blanks as we go so forgive me any gaps and feel free to correct any errors. I want to go all the way back to our last flag in 1995 but getting the exact years of 0 gamers is time consuming and I am not putting some years up until I have all the information.

One thing that will jump out is our recruiting. It's not my intention to make this a recruiting debate over a list management/rebuild debate and it has probably been done to death. Suffice to say, we are looking at how teams build their lists and play their lists, rather than drafting failures which aren't necessarily the fault of the senior coach/list manager.

First thing I want to highlight in the one place (for ease of immediate comparison) is our age profile over time. All ages are of the 1st January of the relevant season:

I have from 2006-2016 and an earlier one from 2002 to show what Pagan was faced with when he came in. I will update more as I go.

Take into consideration where we were on the ladder in any given year because the recruiting philosophies will change.

2002 Ages - Brittain 42 players

Started working on a couple of other teams. In 2004 Hawthorn finished 15th of 16 teams, 4 wins, 18 losses, just 1% off the bottom of the ladder. Clarkson came in, made a big trade, hit the draft hard, made little progress in his first year but got games into a lot of youngsters. Then made two big trades, hit the draft hard again without the same success in hindsight as the year before, made a handy PSD pickup but continued to get games into youngsters.

His age profile when he came in was similar to Carlton 2015. I've just looked at what he did in his first 2 seasons here but will fill in the rest as time permits. In his 3rd year, the Hawks made finals and in his 4th won a flag way ahead of schedule.

How do we rebuild a list?

(a) don't hang on to fringe players & list-cloggers longer than is necessary

(b) only draft players with genuine talent

(c) don't trade first-round picks on speculative offcasts from other clubs

Some obvious but a little more to it. Structure and age profile have to come into it. Also, I don't think anybody drafts players they don't believe has genuine talent. Hawthorn had a boom draft but continued to throw youngsters into the side. Some worked, some didn't but they did create a wave of talent coming through.

I see what Mick was doing with the Jaksch, Whiley, #19 for #7 trade. Trying to fill some gaps in the 3rd/4th year profile as he was intent on getting rid of the ones that weren't working. Even if it works out the Clarkson model suggests he should have been looking for 25-26 year old trades, keeping the pick and hitting the draft to build that 18-19 year old profile back up again.

Unless they add value to the training and culture of the whole.

Define talent? Like Troy Menzel talent? More to it than just talent, unfortunately.
(c) don't trade first-round picks on speculative offcasts from other clubs
No, don't. Are you referring to 2014 though? We'll see.

Something like that.

Everyone will have a different strategy and it all still has to relate to the talent available.
See St.Kilda circa 2013

I'm with you but also think we have taken a few too many players in the past on speculation (ie. knowing they have a glaring deficiency) when we could of played it way safer.

Hawthorn have made an artform of drafting, if the player in question cannot kick with precision, then they don't even consider him. We have to adopt a similar plan or create our own set of minimum standards to draft from, yes, we will get some wrong, hell, all clubs do but we have to increase the chances of getting then right.

Totally agree, I thought it was smart horse trading at the time, we needed some youth on the list and they were ripe for the picking. Still not sure they will work out long-term but they are better than what we had languishing in the magoos.

What if we rated Boekhorst within that top 7? Anyone think that may have been possible?
2014 draft wasn't rated very highly at all for tope end talent. Time will tell.

I'm not sure how much science SOS uses when selecting players.

I think it will be
a) can he play the way we want .
b) do we really need him
c) is he the right age
d) how much.

Unless they add value to the training and culture of the whole.

No Harks, we cannot draft players or retain them just because they 'add value to the training and culture of the whole'.

If we were talking about a local suburban club then I'd wholeheartedly agree with you but we aren't, this is a multi-million dollar professional sporting outfit, we have to dramatically raise the standards across the board. Adding value to the training & culture should be a non-negotiable facet of every player at the club, not a redeeming feature to hang on to lesser lights.

It may work out fine. I don't believe we handled our age profile in our 22 and under list very well after 2012 so when we keep topping up 21, 22, 23 year olds that are obviously going to be a lot older if we sink to the bottom and have to rebuild again, these ones stand out for the ages involved, if not the player quality.

Pagan addressed an aging list and a dearth of youngsters well, but we didn't have the picks until his last two drafts and failed to identify much talent. Still, the idea is to replace older failed players with younger players if you are rebuilding, even if they are speculative. Not all at once, and certainly don't get rid of sure fire best 22 players because they have reached a certain age. They should just be managed more, not play every game. Pagan recruited a heap of older speculative players and that is where he went wrong.

Ratten continued what Pagan had started in terms of keeping up the under 22 numbers and managing the older players so we didn't have too many. As our results improved Ratten maintained the numbers and allowed a large core of best 22 players to come through. These are the 26 year olds we see today that will make our list look older next year, that were best 22 in 2011 and we had to hold on to as we didn't have enough coming through underneath.

A massive shift came in 2013 as Mick came in and after discussing with McKay, Rogers etc, decided he would wait a year and assess, that block of 22 year olds Ratten had turned 23, Mick trimmed some of the 19, 20, 21 year olds just a touch, didn't trade, failed to hit the draft with any purpose and our Under 22 profile plummeted.

Some will say that he had to get rid of the deadwood he inherited, but so did Pagan, so did Ratten. They did so, but they also maintained the youth supplies by whatever means possible. Draft, Rookie Draft, International players, they kept the youth coming in.

2013 was our crossroads in a sense. We obviously rated ourselves and Mick must have brought into that. What happened may have happened because the players did not buy into the game plan, and I think we can agree they never did that for whatever reason. If anybody had decided our list wasn't up to it, we would have invested in youth.

2014 we maintained the low youth profile as we had played finals through good fortune and still believed we were a top 8 side.

2015 the reality had hit after a poor last season but we still didn't hit the 18 year olds to any great degree, instead investing in 20 year olds. We had a couple of retirements but had to rely on more at the end of the season to manage those older players properly.

Now, I'm not saying that we should get too many 18 year olds in any one season. Richmond added 10 or so when Hardwick first came in and 6 of them were gone within 3 years.

We got 6 18 year olds this year. Would have preferred 7 or 8 considering where we were coming from, but given we traded well, hit the draft with quality picks and managed our top end ages well, it was a good start. We will need to start looking at the 27 and over players at the end of the year when a heap of 26 year olds are now 27.

I'm not sure how much science SOS uses when selecting players.

I think it will be
a) can he play the way we want .
b) do we really need him
c) is he the right age
d) how much.

I don't think we are looking at the next season when he looks at that criteria though. We are most definitely looking long term so c) has a higher weighting.

Weitering round 1, Curnow round 2, Cuningham an emergency. I don't think we will be as stringent as far as making players earn it for the next year or two. We all know Graham should have played more earlier if we had an inkling we needed to rebuild soon.

We retained White and Armfield for reasons not solely based on talent.

We have continued to recruit players that want to play for the club and not just because they may be perceived to be the best talent available.

Yes, the fit has to be right by way of ability but not at the expense of having more airheads on the squad. Bootsma had talent to burn......as did Yarran......as did Menzel, and where did they get us?

Get the culture right first and watch just how much better 'the team' (as it is a team game) will perform.

We retained them because we couldn't replace them with anything better, had nothing to do with their training attitude.

And if we keep recruiting players based on their good guy personality instead of their footballing ability, then we may as well shuffle off to a suburban league permanently.

Bootsma was limited in talent and in grey matter, poor example. I'll agree with you about Menzel & Yarran, they had s**t attitudes but they did have talent if and when they wanted to show it.

Thing is, most players get interviewed pre-draft and do psyche tests etc to ascertain where they fit mentally. This is not an exact science and its the one area that most clubs fall over in because a lot of it doesn't come out till they have been at the club for some time (players are under different pressures in games and at training etc).

If we commit to drafting highly talented players first and foremost then we are giving ourselves every opportunity to succeed. However, if they fall-over on attitudinal deficiencies after the club has done as thorough research as they possibly can in that area then we just have to wear it.

Obviously I'm guessing but I honestly think SOS looks at a guys an thinks "can he play?" and if he doesn't then you've got an uphill battle to get in his good books.

It's why I fear for a lot of those guys he didn't select.

Perhaps but meanwhile guys like Buckley and Graham and Boekhorst are getting opportunity to prove themselves before SOS gets an itchy firing finger. Shouldn't be too many unknowns getting delisted. Maybe the likes of DVR, Smith and Foster will start getting anxious.

Sos isn't calling the shots with match committee though. If Bolts wants a look at clem, dvr, foster etc he'll get his way.

No doubt.

But at the end of the year the ledger comes out and he makes the call.

i'm not saying it's a bad thing, I'm just hoping he's right A LOT!!
