Carlton Phantom Draft

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

The BigFooty phantom draft in the draft and trading forum requires that we put our heads together and come up with our selections for the draft to be submitted in the week leading up to the draft on November 22.

Considering the Blues are looking at PP2 and draft pick 60 plus a couple later I would suggest, our task is not so hard.

What we need to do is announce our preferences for our picks and the most popular preferences will get the gong unless a club has got in before us in which case our next preference will get it and so on and so on.

The priority pick is the big one and with the Dogs sure to select Cooney then we really only need your preference for our priority pick out of the remaining contenders.

As for the later picks, well we will have to keep an eye on the other boards to keep an eye on who might be left over or maybe a delisted ruckman or useful player we can use when the delisting occur shortly.

If anybody wants to pick up the ball and run with it and report back here, feel free.

ODN

Don't muck around on these midfield short people, just grab Kepler Bradley. At 198cm and acknowledged as the best big man in the draft, he will be worth his weight in gold in a couple of years time.

We have bolstered the midfield with all of our trading so we must plug the CHB position or at least start and groom someone for the job. Bradley is the best suited and talented of those in the mix so we should take him with open arms.

For what it's worth, if Bradley can become the quality CHB we are hoping for and Angwin shakes off his off-field issues to make CHF his, then we can build a whole team around them.

Stevens is a bonus but we have to plan for the future. Kouta and Campo are getting old.

Tenace. Or barring that, Walker.

Tenace or Walker.

Take Cameron Gauci with one of the low picks. Selected in the AA Tac Cup side, good mark for his size, tough, great attitude, gets heaps of the ball, will make it according to my mate who coaches at the jets, he's their best shot.

Only prob is the media guy at the jets doesn't like him and didn't push him for the national champs, so he didn't get a gig with any of the metro/country sides and rarely got selected in best players in the papers.

draft

2004 draft son of greg williams jye super fast hands goood kick both right and left bit slow like his dad but

thoughts please

Have tossed this one up and changed my mind a few times between Walker, Sylvia and Tenace.

Not too interested in Bradley as there is a school of thought that suggests he is not an absolute certainty to make it.

I know that we have picked up midfielders but we are really recruiting for the future here and Scotland, Clarke, Johnson and co are not the future, they merely represent immediate competiveness to protect the club long term. When Campo and Kouta are gone in 2-4 years, we will be looking for Stevens and whoever we draft this year to be the midfield stars. After seeing the pace and the pinpoint disposal of Kane Tenace, I think we have to draft him.

Besides before trade week, we all knew we needed pace and a midfielder and have been talking about Tenace all year. I am not one to jump off my horse mid race and if we pass on Tenace after considering him the most and he stars elsewhere, it will feel like Goddard and Wells all over again.

The word on Bradley is that he doesn't enjoy body contact, not what you want for a KPP or ruckman.
Warming more and more towards Walker and Sylvia as the days pass. Walker is a super athlete of Kouta and Pavolich proportions and Sylvia is Mr. Reliable, tough as nails and fiercly determined.
If we get Stevens then I warm towards Sylvia, he's got future skipper written all over him.

What worries me is that we are second guessing with Walker. This has been our downfall before and hope to god we don't fail with this pick. Everyone is saying he will grow, he will mature, whe will play better because he is younger.......but who is to know for sure. Tenace/Sylvia/Cooney have all completed there apprentierships and are naturally ready for the next move.

Very apprehesive about the Walker talk, but then no expert, so will be interesting to see what the outcome will be.

I would say Walker or Tenace.. the true query I have is whether we would have veen considered Walker prior to draft camp. Was speaking to someone involved with the TAC cup and they said that Walker was expect to go top 10, but no where near pick 2 prior to draft camp (where he dominated).. Tenace is an outside Midfielder... my worry is that we do not have a class inside midfielder (although kouta played the role this year) so possibly Sylvia... but hey I am a betting man.. WALKER it is.. heard he has a bit of leppitch in him..

Pick 60, I wouldnt take a de-listed player like betheras (mentioned in post before).. take a punt on a youngster.. after pick 20, anything can happen. AFter pick 60 we can keep havign pick after pick (as everyone else will pass).. I believe we will select Dylan Smith in either the national or pre season draft and also take other rejects such as Barham (from St. Kilda..) and even consider Caydn Beetham.. preferably if we are to take a headcase.. I'd take Steve Lawrence as he offers rebound out of defence.. We really need to get a ruckman somewhere.. I know he is a hack but what about Marsh? He will play in the twos as an absoloute back up... we are F&*^ED if french and angwin go down during the year!

I cannot see us drafting to lift us off the bottom rungs of the ladder yet (as Doggies will be a much better team with Grant and possibly Rawlings).. but look on the bright side.. we will be here next year discussing the best prospects until we are ready to be premiers 2005!

If Marsh is all that is available then he is better than having Prendergast or Beasy as a first ruck if French and Angwin fall over. Can't believe that we didn't promote Hedge as insurance. Huge risk taking by the Blues.

Has to be Walker. He is fast becoming the buzz player among recruiters. Some think Cooney's a false #1 and that this bloke should be it. Forget Bradley. The smokey (if you can have one who will likely be taken in the top five anyway) could be Farren Ray. Massive untapped potential there . . .

Who says Cooney's a false #1? How do you know Walker's becoming the buzz player among recruiters? Is it based on his camp results?

forget ALL about Bradley......he's a stringbean in the daniel bandy mode.............very very light and skinny.....will NEVER be strong enough to shine in the AFL....ever.

I like the idea of drafting someone that can show glimpses in their first year like Judd, Wells and Goddard did so Tenace looks good to me. I know he has great delivery and pace and that won't crack too much under pressure. It is more the getting of the ball that has to be worked on by a youngster playing amongst men. In Walker's case, his game requires a bit more aerial strength and that will have to be worked on when he steps up. He is not slow but probably can't streak away like Tenace can so his physical development is all important. Having said that, hearing about his ability to take the odd 'screamer' certainly recaptures some of the romanticism of football for me and reasons why we watch the game. SOS too was a high flyer and when he became grounded, he was mature enough to adapt his game to become the fullback of the century.

As for talk of Colin Sylvia being a Michael Voss, I am not convinced. Voss is such a great player but would almost be wasted in a struggling side. He is inspirational and sets up his teammates with class but like Kouta this year, if he did not have any support, his efforts would be stuffed up by those around him. I long for the days of the towering mark or the blistering run inside the forward 50. How good did it use to be to see bit players like Fraser Murphy streak past the full forward and fullback as the quick kick went over their heads and to see a fleet footed player gather the ball in the goal square and kick it into the upper reaches of the grandstand and pump the fists as his teammates ran in. We are badly in need of these kind of adrenaline pumping moments. If Murphy could do it with pace but limited ability, Tenace and possibly Walker could do it even better.

I am truly torn with this one but if my fellow supporters assessments of Walker are not just wishful thinking, then he sounds too good to be true.

I have to have faith in the Blues hierarchy to do the right thing.

I haven't seen any of the draftees but going on what I've read I like Walker as versatile, with a bit of height as well as mobility and he is a year younger than Tenace and a lot can happen in a year, whoever we go for we better get it right, no more Murray Vances!!!

PS. Can't say Fraser Murphy gave me much pleasure ODN. He was fast but if he didn't time his run or if the ball didn't bounce into his arms he was nowhere. Would be a cert to make our most ordinary premiership player team if we were to pick one

Yeah I know Fraser Murphy was limited in his ability but in those sides he didn't have to do much. Finishers got all the glory in those days and everybody wanted to be the goalkicker who got the crowd on their feet when they were younger.

Point is that he was able to do it with limited ability while a genuine talent who also had pace would be a welcome addition.

I'm happy to leave it in the hands of the experts. Thus far this season they have done very little wrong.

*Bump*

Tenace has just been delisted.

I spoke a lot of shit back then too. Tenace - good delivery? Where did I get that from?

Tenace, Walker, or Bradley were all the rage then. As unlucky as Walker has been, we would do well to remember it could have been worse.
