Coach Carlton under Voss

Can you imagine how much strife he’d be in if Carlton hadn’t had a mind-blowingly easy draw so far this year?

Melbourne were the 9th bottom 8 (currently) team they’ve played this year, and the 8th bottom 6 team, while they’ve played an incredible 5 games against the bottom 3 of West Coast (twice), North (twice) and Richmond.

To put that into context with us, who are currently 4th bottom:

Games v bottom 8 for the year so far:
Blues 9, Saints 5

Games v bottom 6 for the year so far:
Blues 8, Saints 3 😳

Games v bottom 3 for the year so far:
Blues 5, Saints 2 😳

Wins v top 8 teams:
Carlton 1 (Geelong)
St Kilda 2 (Geelong, Freo)

Wins v top 12 teams:
Carlton 1 (Geelong)
St Kilda 3 (Geel, Freo, Port in Adel)

Losses v bottom 8 teams:
Carlton 3
St Kilda 2

Losses v bottom 3 teams:
Carlton 2
St Kilda 1

Give St Kilda Carlton’s draw so far and Carlton St Kilda’s, and from the evidence above, Carlton are currently 4th, if not 3rd bottom, and we’d pretty much certainly be 3 if not 4 spots higher (all else being equal).

And Voss would be gone. The draw has saved his bacon!

Irrelevant St Kilda Whinge Alert

I think this is it. I’ve heard Carlton supporters say of late they need a big name coach, well, no, that’s been tried with Pagan and MM and they sacked them both. Since the John Elliott days it’s been a huge crossover from the suits to the actual playing department.

Any ego attached to the club needs to be gone because there’s nothing of note to get uppity about. I reckon they need to start looking at leadership standards all over the place and begin the cull.
Sort of reminds me of Essendon. They have similar problems too.

Yet Essendon in the last 20 seasons have lured some solid experienced coaches in Mark Bomber Thompson, John Worsfold and Brad Scott

Think it’s a pretty good example of how bad “the draw” is and how much it can distort the season.

It’s a Mickey Mouse concept for what is meant to be a professional sports league.
I get it. And everyone including Carlton supporters acknowledged they had received a soft draw in 2025. Not everything has to be converted into a whinge about how hard St Kilda have it though. It's covering so many topics and becoming relentless.

Neither team was going anywhere significant this year based on their performances. Maybe with a soft draw St Kilda get 12 wins and finish 10th, a couple of games out of the 8. They get a worse pick. Some bottom 4 finishes will be good for the Sainters. Maybe difficult draws will help with that.

I thought it was an interesting comparison of clubs in similar positions, didn’t take it as a whinge.

Not like an easier draw would have helped us this year IMO, especially when you drop games to the likes of West Coast…..

Hopefully one day in the near future we have a comp with enough teams so that everyone plays each other once. Would make a lot of these big matches even more meaningful.

The last five rounds this year are pretty irrelevant, apart from the top 8 teams occasionally playing each other. Waste of time.

Posters who have been saying we're destined for bottom 2 all year complaining that we have an easy fixture...

You think Voss looks real safe atm?

What did you expect?
Hard for Vossy to coach a team of shit footballers. Can't polish turds and there's atleast 30 of them on the list.

There's quite a few that have talent but are just content to coast every week and collect an inflated pay check.

If there’s one bloke you’d want to have a look at for inspiration on how to play it’s Voss. These players these days are more interested in their socials and next trip to America in the off season to watch NFL.
He has the right idea. He just cant get the players on board. If he cant do that then he's not senior coach material.

lol Carlton fans turning on De Koning as they know he's about to leave them.
They did this when he was unable to keep his spot in the team a few years back. You can see why he's happy to accept a change of scenery.
Lol what? He will be going to a team offering 600K+ more per year. Let's not pretend this has anything to do with Carlton fans.

They have always struck me as one of the least agile clubs, like they are still stuck in the John Elliott ways of buying the best players and 'We're Carlton, **** the rest'.

Sydney made B2B GFs without Buddy, winning one, then two GFs in three years with Buddy, winning none. Hawthorn made B2B GFs with Buddy, winning one, then B2B GFs without Buddy, winning both. Arguably the best player this century (top 5 anyway) moving between two of the contending clubs didn't really change the fortunes of either. That's how hard it is to win flags. Carlton give me vibes that they think if they can swap Harry McKay for another mid they will win the flag.
The problem is they do everything half assed.

I just compare them to teams who successfully got off the bottom like the Tigers under Hardwick or Lions under Fagan and cringe.

Drafting wise we hit big in 2015, but then whiffed on a number of key picks. Not a great deal of late round success either. That has meant we’re short of players in key areas and had to waste valuable draft capital to secure missing talent.

Those trades for Cerra etc haven’t been nearly as successful as one would hope.

Instead of seemingly having a well run ship with everyone on the same page the club just appears to have continual problems that they try to fix with band aid solutions.

Nothing about the coaches they select seems like it’s ever off the back of well run and comprehensive process.

There has never seemed to be a recruiting strategy that aligns with coaching and forward thinking.

Everyone mentions how the stand rule made the contested footy brand outdated and hard to win with. I do agree somewhat however Richmond was showing back to 2017 that winning games mucking up things with pressure and speed was a viable premiership strategy. Craig McRae was at Richmond and I don’t think his gameplan is drastically different from what a lot of what Richmond was doing then.

I was vehemently against Voss when he was hired. He was no good at the Lions and at Port okay there were decent reviews about people skills etc and maybe his work with Ollie Wines but that club wasn’t winning anything. Yes he wasn’t the head coach but I don’t think he’s much different from Hinkley.

Plus to me it was like they got told no by Clarkson, messed around with Lyon and then just thought oh well Vossy’s a a good guy. There was no proper process.

Both the Tigers and Lions had a strategy and a coach there for a long time to implement what they wanted. Carlton meanwhile chopped and changed coaches and now seemingly decided on a coach with an outdated idea about footy.

I’m sure part of it is how much money we’ve wasted on McGovern etc but compared to say the Lions we simply have ignored key problems with the list. Look at the Lions recruitment since 2016 and you’ll see they consistently filled holes. We did a couple of times but most of our pick ups have been overpaid players who cost too much draft capital like Cerra, McGovern, Saad etc

Now we’ve got Graham Wright who is meant to come in and blow the joint apart and maybe fix things. Consider me quite pessimistic about that considering Carlton’s idea about how to win flags or at least be consistently up the ladder again involves getting in the big name fitness coaches, coaches, CEOs, footy managers, big name player etc.

The same goes with the Longmire rumours. Again maybe I see things too pessimistically but he quit the Swans because he was basically out of gas. Gives off serious Malthouse vibes in my opinion.
