Best thing is there's conjecture on who actually is in our 5 most important players.
Was only a few years ago that we would struggle to fill the spots after you pencilled in Judd.
Would be a dream if we are tossing up a name like Watson writing our 2016 lists.

See a lot of people still rating kreuzer. Potential is undeniable but seeing him in a moonboot this morning makes you wonder is he EVER going to be fit. How old is he now? must swallow a fair chunk of salary cap? Losing patience. With some of the good young midfielders Carlton has a good experienced ruck would have been handy. Can't be in the top 5 important players from the sideline

Answer my own ? he is 26 this year. should be in his prime, should be in our top 5, should be dominating and the number 1 ruckman in the league

Let me say I think your post is in bad taste the month it was announced that Kreuzer's career-ending foot injury has suffered a recurrence.

Not sure whether we can include Menz in our most important players as yet, on potential sure but needs to put in more 4 qtr efforts before he jumps up the list Imo.
Of structural importance :

Jamo & Rowe
Hendo
Murph
Simmo

It begs the question, what makes a player the most important? So I'll have a go with the reasons they are.

1. Murphy. Club captain, ergo, most important player at the club.
2. Gibbs. Reigning B&F, well earned and vice-captain. He ranks because we need to see another season of this consistency.
As the two above are both mids, the next two should represent Forward and Backlines.
3. Jamison. Key back man, vice captain. No surprises ever. When he's on the park you see 100%, rarely beaten in one-on-one. Always strives to give a chop out. Capable of some rebound. Leader.
4. Henderson. At this stage our most consistent (with room for improvement) forward. Member of the leadership group.
Ok, so we've got leadership and areas of the ground covered, so number 5 has to be a toss up. Do we go for youth, or most class?
5.if youth, Menzel. You just watch him and you can see that he knows how to play the game at a level that only the elite can. If class, Yarran. For the same reasons as Menzel, but he has shown it more regularly and with consistency.

So there you have it. My top 5 in 6 simple selections.

1. Murphy
2. Gibbs
3. Simpson
4. Henderson
5. Walker

NOTE: We have proven many times that we don't need Judd to win games.
Jamo just edged out.
Yarren, Rowe & Everitt are worthy mentions.

M
No Gibbs - :D - Stop Read.

Henderson.....Gibbs.....Murphy.....Rowe.....Yarran

I know. Rowe right? Given our lack of KPP, it come down to either he or Jamison and I think Rowe may just cover more bases right now.
Agree with this. Rowe is the general there now. Having said that, would love the Jamo who could blanket his man AND go for a gallop back.

Our most important player - by a street is Judd. No other player comes close - even when he is only partially fit - to leading by example, extracting the footy, setting up teammates and carrying the rest of the team. OK so the last year or so hasn't been his greatest but wayyyy too many are writing him off. Reading about his injuries, we are lucky he's still on the list. Given a solid pre-season and luck through the season proper, he will show why he's the premier hard-ball winner in the AFL.
After him and daylight comes Gibbs, Jamison, Thomas, and Casboult. Gibbs class and versatility is obvious, Jamison is the dour defender that keeps the rest of the backline honest, Thomas knows how to work hard and is class and Casboult provides the marking target that makes defenders shit and frees up our other forwards.

1. Murphy. The guy is A-grade, but if he isn't firing or is injured, the midfield almost feels impotent.

2. Gibbs. See Murphy. Has stepped up massively. Who'd have thought the midfield would be where he plays best, eh?

3. Henderson. Hendo has the leadership skills to direct the forward line, the skills to dominate it and the flexibility to go where needed. Can't ask for any more than that. If Hendo has a great game, we win. Takes the heat off guys like Casboult or Jones to deal with a lesser defender.

4. Yarran. The only thing holding Yaz back from attaining superstar status is about 7 disposals per game. He currently averages 16. If he can drag that up to around 23-24, the AFL might as well forgo the count and turn the Brownlow into a big party for Yarran. The weaknesses in his game (such as deep defensive work) have been rectified. He has the complete game now. Just needs to own it.

5. Rowe. If this guy can improve yet again this year, his good work amplifies Jamison's, since Jammo doesn't need to take the biggest forward. Strategically, an in-form Rowe is a massive plus for the team.

No way is Casboult in our best 5
Important not best.

If Casboult doesnt play, Warnock and Wood both play and Jones is the second tall forward. Neither Wood or Warnock are close to being a marking target. Hendo will be swamped by defenders.

We lose flexibilty and structure if Casboult is out or out of form. Makes him very important.

Pretty sure Watson would just come in rather than playing both Wood and Warnock.

Not in any particular order;

Hendo- we need a swingman
Cas- rotates through the ruck and marks well. important that he improves his goal kicking efficiency. (Jabba73 nailed it above)
Rowe- assists Jamo very well and frees him up a little
Yazza- his pace through the middle is crucial for our rebounding success
Gibbs & Murph- simply need them both on the deck

Thats 6 players there but not sure which one to omit as one of the 5 most important. Possibly Rowe if I must choose.
Didn't bother reading the article either, not wasting 5 mins of my life :p

These are the five most important players on our list:

1. Troy Menzel
2. Patrick Cripps
3. Blaine Boekhorst
4. Kristan Jaksch
5. Dillion Viojo-Rainbow

Our best 22 of years gone by couldn't take us to the top. The closest they got was 5th. More important than our best having good years is how these five youngsters develop and perform. Without young players stepping up and making an impact we'll never go anywhere and these are the most likely five under 21 to make that impact.

If we want long term success the club needs these 5 to make it. They are our most important players.

Or our most important 5.
I'd have Hendo before Cas.
Don't know about that. It's a given that Lachie plays well. If Levi shines this season, it will be massive for us. I can see why it'd be considered important.

There's an argument that neither Wood nor Warnock are AFL standard and thus wouldn't make our best 22.

With Matty K out indefinitely, technically that makes Levi our first ruck? :p
