Carlton's lethal weapon

THIS is the man who has put the tough back into Carlton.
John Donehue, a jujitsu black belt who was a bodyguard for Nelson Mandela and General Norman Schwarzkopf, has played a major role in the birth of the blue-collar Blues.

Carlton hired Donehue as a full-time coach last year, aware it needed to lift its intensity at the contest and aggression at the ball carrier.

A private person, he doesn't give interviews and goes almost unnoticed at Visy Park. But it's a different story in the inner sanctum, where his tackling and grappling sessions have given the Blues added steel.

There ate more than 5 jiu jitsu black belts in the UFC alone. Add strikeforce and other fighting comps too. Hell I trained with a black belt twice this year and met the 08 brazillan (middleweight?) champ, who was a BB, travelling in 09. Marcelo 'Ramones' Copa if you can find him on the web

Sorry to burst this bubble!

Tanks, he is right.

Black belt
A general estimate of the time required to progress from brown belt to black belt in most academies is 2 to 3 years.[9][10][11]
As with many other martial arts, the black belt is the highest common belt within the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, denoting an expert level of technical and practical skill.[2] Estimates vary on the time required to achieve the rank, with 10 years total (or more) an often heard estimate.[9] No matter how many actual years are required, every Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt will have undoubtedly invested thousands of hours of mat time (randori) into the art and hold a skill-set that demonstrably reflects such.

The IBJJF requires that a student be at least 19 years old and have spent a minimum of 1 year ranked as a brown belt to be eligible to receive a black belt.

Just a touch more exclusive than the Taekwondo black belt club, I reckon (a young, slow and not overly flexible blues4flag received his as a 12 year old). :o
Still true, generally takes 10-12 years to get a BJJ black while most styles of TKD are about 3-4 years.

Yeh, Herald Sun air-balled on that fact. BJJ Black Belts are not uncommon. They are bad-ass, though.

This sounds like good cross-training to me. BJJ is all about wrestling for position, holding your opponent at disadvantage, taking your opponent down to the ground. Like the tackling training with Melbourne Storm, it's a great idea to pick up ideas/techniques from other sports and bring them over to ours.

In fact... I think I might have had this idea years ago, except I suggested judo as the other sport. Something that's specifically about tackling. Bloody hell, good thinking, me.

Our other secret weapon is getting an exclusive deal with the tackling coach from the Melbourne Storm.

They showed him during the Blues paddlepops game and said who he was.

Yeah, saw it as well.

Would be interested to see the percentage of front on tackles against the ones from behind, am sure Teddy Hopkins and the boys are working on adding another column to the sheet.

Have to say I have noticed the use of hooks (legs wrapped around opponents legs) when tackling a downed opponent. Very useful strategy to reduce movement.

Also there is way more than 5 BJJ black belts. Maybe they meant 5 BJJ Black belts who reside in Australia. Even then that may be inaccurate
