Casboult's Kicking.

Casboult held the ball slightly differently today, released it much lower than before and also looked fairly balanced, so that's the top half sorted.

Unfortunately, the bottom half still sucked. Didn't get the hips right and didn't kick through the ball in a straight line. To me, it looks like his run-up doesn't work. If it felt comfortable, I reckon he should be looking at Jay Schulz and the way he lightly jogs in for his kicks. Means he probably won't feel like he needs to generate so much force with his kicking and spray it everywhere.

I would like to know how bad/good is he at kick to kick. If he was kicking back and forward to someone 40m away - how accurate is he?
If he is reasonable do this a lot and then frame the person he is kicking to with a couple of witch's hats 10m in front of the person and 3.5m either side of the person - to show him how easily he CAN kick a 30m goal (we have to get his confidence up)

We have to get his mindset right... with his field kicking, he doesnt get the time to over-think things. When he is kicking goal, I think that he stresses himself out of the kick by worrying about previous kicks at goal. TC, thats a good idea setting up the witches hats and is an extension of what I have been suggesting. Get him to pick out a single face in the crowd directly behind the goals and kick it to them.

I love the big bastard. He ******* smashes packs and squeezes the oxygen out of the pig skin when he takes a grab. Yep his kicking is horrid but he gives us something that no one else currently does.
**** this post made me laugh. Woke my wife up giggling in bed. Haha

Why not just pass it off to Tuohy or Gibbs whenever he's like 30+ out and not feeling confident at all?

Their both good shots for goal on the run I feel, maybe it could get a little predictable but it's better than just slamming on his boot and praying for the best.

Actually is a bloody good idea

Once CRUZ is fit, send him to the twos to learn how to play CHB. He has all the attributes IMO and I don't believe he'll ever be a consistent forward.

That has always been my favourite. With the camera work we get nowadays, if I was his kicking coach reviewing his performance, I would expect him to be able to tell me who in the crowd he was kicking it to - just to make sure he is concentrating on the strategy

If he shanks anymore sitters then he will be sent to the two's and replaced with Watto. If that does happen then he will want to really improve (and quickly) because with kreuzer fit it will only make it harder for him to squeeze back into the firsts.

His field kicking is fine, this needs to be analysed so it can be replicated into his goal kicking.
Bingo. He's already fixed his kicking - just not his goal kicking. Proof that it's all upstairs. Get Sav to stand behind the goals yelling "kick it to me!".

It's a nice option, but doesn't fix his kicking .

Eventually he'll have to take shots at goal, has to happen, can't be avoided.

The other part is, if you think he's clunking them now, wait till he starts slotting goals. He will be unstoppable. At the moment he's going for every mark dreading he's going to have to kick for goal.

Could he just play in the 2s whilst he is working on his goal kicking with Sav and then when he is kicking 2 or 3 consistently in the 2s bring him back into the senior team. I am happy we persist with him for the rest of the season. He is too good of a mark to let him go.

They have got the wrong blokes working with him on his kicking. Phil Krakouer is the man. Not much can go wrong when you put it down with two hands and you are still hanging onto the ball when you kick it. His kicking accuracy was superb.

At the end of the day, I can't say I'm too fussed by his shanks, considering he is now getting help from Sav.

As some posters mentioned, his action and ball drop was significantly different (better) than I have seen from him in the past. It's baby steps, but let's get real. It's a problem that has plagued him for some time. It isn't going to turn around immediately.

Put it in perspective:

* He is 25 - meaning he will be around (if good enough) when we next challenge for a flag.
* We are not paying him big bucks, and nor will he command big bucks until he fixes this problem.
* We can afford to keep him on the list for the next three years, as it's a high reward investment.
* We aren't going to challenge this year, so get games under his belt.

The last thing I want to see is we de-list or trade him, then Hawthorn pick him up as a top-up and he stars in a flag-winning side.

Be patient friends, Casboult will come along as we will... after all, it would just be a waste for him to be kicking 3.0 every week while, realistically, we aren't challenging.

This is just a thought I want to throw out there.

As a keen golfer I think I understand the mechanics behind a golf swing and putting stroke. I also know that if you decide to tinker with your swing no matter what level you are at you will go backwards before you go forwards. I think the same can be said for goal kicking at AFL level.

If Levi is working with Sav I think this may well be the case. I reckon today his goal kicking routine looked slightly different to normal. He did not take the wide arc as much so potentially this is something he is working on with Sav. To try and change ingrained habits is always going to take a lot of time.

I personally think the good outweighs the bad with Levi and he needs some time to work on his new routine before we start to judge if it will be a success.
taking the golfing analogy, I can fix my golf swing easily because I am new to the sport. But my tennis serve is nigh on unfixable, 20 years of bad habits are ingrained. If Levi has been kicking this style for all his life is it possible at this late stage to change his technique?

He should be the type of player that can kick 5+ on a regular basis in the magoos, but I don't think he ever has. The times that he's been dropped, he would come back in a few weeks later having only kicked 1-2 per game.

I believe it can but my point is that it will take time and in most cases people go backwards before they go forwards. In golf it is more about how much you can improve. Everyone can be at a certain level and maintain that but without proper intervention you will never improve greatly.

For Levi it will be changing what he is comfortable with and making him uncomfortable to improve.

Casboult is only keeping Kreuzer's place warm at the moment.

If a miracle does happen and he starts kicking straight we won't be wasting him as a part time ruck. He will be kicking 60 a year from the goal square.

Wait, was that a flying pig that just went past my window? No, it was a seagull.
