The simple fact here is that you are dealing with a different culture that enjoys different meat to your traditional Aussie killed meat. How do you think we look to Indians who consider cows sacred? I'll tell you........we look like bloody barbarians.
How can you even consider the cats are family pets? This is an opinion purely based on the nationality of the restaurant owners, and not based on logical thought patterns. In fact it is borderline racism.
Now I'm sure Danni and others will wave their arms around and have hissy fits at me saying that, but ask yourself why you suddenly considered cat as abhorrent on a menu and even considered that pets would be used?
Meat is meat...............you can not tell me, or any sane person, that eating one type of meat is less barbaric or abhorrent than eating another type of meat. I'm not a vegetarian (jesus, I'm not a pansy ;)) but at least I can welcome other cultures without openly biased pre-judgements.
Fair enough Santos.

As for the racism, it is if any of us are asian.

It's socially acceptable to eat cat or dog in asian countries.

I'm not aware of any Asian countries that regularly eat cat. Some, such as Vietnamese and Chinese, eat dog, but not your family pet - they are specially bred.

What I do find a problem is the way they are 'prepared'. Many asian countries, Korea for example, kill the dog by drowning it, or chasing it around bashing it over the head with a stick or brick. They believe the extra adrenalin rush the dog has, makes the meat taste better.

Different values. Asian culture generally has little regard for the value of animal life. Look at all the endangered species as a result of "traditional medicine" and aphrodisiacs.

Well you're wrong on that count.

As I orginally said - I was wondering with all our domestic pet protection laws, was it illegal to be served here.

If someone wants to eat it, so be it, I personally couldn't eat cat along with alot of other things such as roo, crocodile, rabbit and even duck.

Never said you did - I was just clarifying a misconception amongst some people that they eat any old dog.

Forgive me for being naive but does owning a pet mean the same thing in Asia as over here? I am just wondering if there is the idea of 'as long as it's not my pet' sort of thing.

Truly, not trying to flame anything, just asking. :)

Particularly if animals that are also pets are also potential food for later.

Danni

It isn't illegal, as long as they aren't stealing peoples pets & they are being killed humanely, the R.S.P.C.A. said they would like to know the details of the restaurant involved, so they can check everything is being done legally.
