Some weird takes on some kids playing lately.
'Play the kids' we hear when a team has stuffed their season.
What do people think that means? It means to get experience, to get games and development into them.
Then people complain when these kids do turnovers or miss tackles or are pantsed by an experienced forward.

They will make mistakes, they will allow goals like Gulden last week, they will cause easy goals like Tauru has. If you want kids played and developed, you live with these mistakes and losses.

Four teenagers playing today, all St.Kilda.

Spot on

You can't have it both ways. We've been so desperate to make finals every year we haven't done what it takes to properly move forward. We're doing that now. Finally. I welcome it.

I think everyone knows that, but posters are still allowed to comment on the match ups and their output. What coach who wanted to win the game would play a 3rd gamer on someone as proven as Cameron? We all know Tauru made mistakes thats understandable, it was just a very odd positional move.

Even the better kids take time, have a look at Nas he has been in the system 4 years and although he has been very good he is only now dominating. All kids no matter their abilities take time, thats why unless we can bring in a number of experienced players these kids and the team are going to take years before leap frog our current position.

5 tackles inside 50 is totally unacceptable. Some people only want to bang on about system and ball use but pressure, especially in your forward 50, is a fundamental that needs to be a focus.

That’s been a stat we’ve lost by a lot in many times this year, like contested marks.

A lot of that has to do with how many intercept marks Geelong took back there though.

They had the stat up on the screen during the game and from memory the last time I saw it it was something like 14 back half intercept marks to 5 or so for us, so that takes away the opportunity to lock it in with tackles.

Geelong of course love to have a “plus-1” in defence and that would have been helped by us liking to push a forward or two up to stoppages, so we were presumably outnumbered up there for most of the day.

Hopefully next year if we’ve got Pou and Nas playing midfield we’ll be more willing to go 6-6-6 for most of the game.

Maybe there was no one else to bring in but I think it has been a mistake bringing Wilson into the team twice now after he's played VFL for 1 week. I genuinely think he needs a 4 or 5 week stretch in the twos to really build some confidence and get his game back on track.
Bigtime. Needs a month there, like Pou did.

Just saw RTB's presser. Glad he highlited this stat because it was one of the things I found most disappointing about the game

Hill was fine today. Yes, he had mistakes but so did every other player on the field. He did more good than bad. People just jump on every little thing here does as an excuse to criticise him. It's disproportionate compared to every other player at the club.

Also, he's not on that original contract anymore. No one has a clue what he is being payed on this new one so anyone using that as a reason why they can criticise him more then others needs to move on.

I couldn't care less if we win or lose right now. What I'm looking for is building towards the future. I firmly believe Ross is trying to do that. Tauru on Cameron... then forward in the last quarter.... absolutely love it.

Our Execution at times is frustrating.

We have our gun mid in Nas. With the way Garcia is going and then if we bring Pou in, we're on the right track.

Hill and Henry liabilities at this point.

Shout out to Hammer. The amount of times he got a fist to the ball was awesome.

Windy and Owens both good.

Sharman an important cog imo.

Just need these signatures done.
Correct
Lyon knows this group as it is right now with the older b-d core aint getting us deep in September so he’s playing for the future
It’s what people asked for weeks ago - you’re getting it
I too don’t care about win-loss right now , we’ll get a win to sing the aint before the end year I’m sure but much much Important than that we need to work out who is taking us forwards that’s all I care about

Disagree.

It's not just the occasional turnover. He's weak and gets easily beaten.

I've had his back since he came. I accept he'll play the year out and does some good things, but to me, overall he has become a liability.

Nas fantastic. Today he looked like that elite mid we've been desperate for.

Higgins better - maybe there is something to the thoughts he cant play with Butler anymore? But he is battling so hard physically. If we had any other small fwd option, he'd probably be given a week off to freshen up.

Tauru learnt a lot today. Caminiti has come a long way since the start of the year in his positioning and now has confidence to direct the other defenders.

Not keen us on playing Boxhall on the wing. Would rather be playing Wilson there where it's more likely his long term position then having him rot in the fwd line and Box running around lost for a quarter on Dempsey.

Henry getting close to a breakout game but too many dropped marks today. Needs to get the simple things right.

Max Hall had 4 (I think) CBAs in the last quarter. So it was good to see him get more opportunity.
Tauru got time in the forward line as another learning.

To lose by 5 goals probably dented our percentage a little bit. Presuming we do win a few of our upcoming games, I don't really want to be squeezed up the ladder by percentage. It's going to be hard enough to reconcile wins against draft position as it stands.

Was our coach trying to win the game? Absolutely. Was he desperate to win the game, was it more important to him than critical experience for a future key position swingman in a season where we are nowhere near playing finals? Probably not.

This is a crazy take, Jezza been one of the best forwards for a decade, what an education for Tauru

I understand the club want to fast track these kids, but I don't think it benefits anyone with them being so exposed so early.

Taurus is not as physically developed as some kids his age, it was a huge ask. Having played senior footy at an early age myself, playing a lessor role would be have been more beneficial for his learning. Lyon basically set the kid up to fail, why dent his confidence in his 3rd game.

What is an 18yo going to learn having a heap of goals kicked on him in a team that got pumped?

What other coach or club would expose an 18yo to such a challenge. Have a look at Geelong's development of Connor Sullivan he didn't play at all in his first year and debuted in Rd 6 this year. He also had an injury in his first year but Geelong let him settle in for the year.

A lot to like from the game. Nas the obvious one. I liked the look of it when we sent Moose to the ruck in the last and had Marshall at full forward. Some food for thought for next year.

They seemed to kill us off defensive turnovers. We couldn't stop them just transitioning the ball with ease.

Honestly I reckon if you took Cameron from their team and stick him in ours today we probably win. Still, lots of good signs. I am just all over us needing a win now, don't care about the draft pick. Some winnable games coming up and we need to sing the song.

Maybe that's why you never made it to the AFL, and Tauru has

Nah that excuse barely worked when he was occasionally damaging. Now it’s almost like he’s been directed to tank. Give him a good rest.

And play Hastie in his place and because he's not surrounded with senior experience his game suffers and he become a Jack Billings or Max King with huge weight of expectation on him. Developing in a side with a strong mature core fast tracks and builds confidence.
