I can't remember who the poster here was but they had an obsession with mids who could take overhead semi contested marks.

With CEY, Greenwood and Gibbs that aspect was a massive improvement. In that sense actually better than having two crouch brothers out there
:D

CEY and Greenwood really have that height and size as a point of difference in our side, almost acting as extra link men going up field.

Compare that to mids like Douglas and Crouch bros, they don't pose such a target. Douglas may be pushed out if these two can continue on and his form doesn't lift, much better to have a mid taking 8 marks a game with 25 touches than 26 touches and 1 mark.

Douglas who finishes 5th in our b&f last year, might be pushed out by CEY & Greenwood? Who don’t even play the same role, and are on the fringes of the 22?

Tee hee :)

As much as I would love to see CEY succeed, and hope he does, am I the only one wondering why the **** we gave away Jarryd ******* Lyons for a half eaten sandwich????
He’s a bigger sandwich.

Douglas? WTF?

Douglas? WTF?
Douglas doesn't pose much of a marking target. He is basically a mid that falls over a lot and a half forward.

I think, if both Yolmen and Greenwood keep up their form from Thursday night, Pyke may consider running with the two big mid/fwds, rather than continuing with Dougy. Keeping in mind age as well.

Yes, when dougie retires he may be pushed out by one of those two

You think they won't keep up the form from last night, or Douglas will continue playing good footy at that level or above all year?

I don't think CEY will keep up the form and Greenwood is in need of a tank, but if they did, he is most likely of our mids to be pushed aside (AA Matt, Gibbs, AA Sloane, Brad...)

How do you not know they’re entirely different types of players, playing different roles?

Douglas is not getting pushed out by CEY. Don’t be silly and FWIW, Douglas is actually a very good mark for his size. His role is not and has never been as a linkman type.

Except you continue to overlook a number of things
- Douglas is a completely different type of player to either of CEY or Hugh
- Douglas offers more versatility than either of those two. We have played Douglas as an inside mid, outside mid, a small forward and a small defender. Neither CEY or Hugh can play any of those roles. Round 1 Douglas played as a small pressure forward, had 3 shots on goal and around 30 pressure acts. Neither of those two can play that role. Both are more marking types.

I understand he's completely different. But at the same time, Thursday night I saw Greenwood off a wing, both CEY and Greenwood starting forward, and both in the middle.

It is whether they value the contested ball and marking side to their games, over Douglas' versatility. I think odds are on Douglas holding his spot, don't get me wrong, but although Pyke loves his versatility, he also loves height.

It's a long shot, but it could happen. It would give us a myriad of marking options around the ground, and Dougy isnt getting any younger.

Pretty sure Dougy would be a shoe in unless he falls off a cliff, or Yolmen become the second coming, though.

Best game I have seen from the C-E-Yo for us. My position has been that he has only a limited ceiling, but he has bulked up and got very fit. I liked how when he got caught on a few occasions he could use his extra strength and build to still get a handball free. He needs to back up that effort but it is looking like he may push right up to his ceiling and get the best out of himself. Good on him and also the club for persevering. With injuries to our mids he is a real bonus!

Yep I agree - and considering he's only played a career total of 16 - 18 AFL games and has had to come back after a serious ACL reconstruction I think he's a great bonus and doing really well.

He really found some form as the game went on.

Few stupid decisions, they will always be part of his game.

But as it stands atm he'll be playing a lot of games at least until our injury list gets shorter.. and after that it'll be down to how he proves himself with this chance he has gotten.
He did make a couple of odd choices eh, but I like his height in the middle and I really hope he grabs his chance that didn't seem like it was gonna eventuate late last year.

Wait I'm sorry, what?

CEY and Hugh can't be inside mids or forwards?

Last I checked both had been played as inside mids and forwards.

Furthermore you tout Douglas for having 3 shots on goal, but he only kicked 1 of them. Hugh and CEY have both kicked a goal in each game. As for 'pressure forward' do you know how many tackles Douglas managed to lay in round 1? 0.

I'd also argue that Douglas is no better an outside mid or small defender than either of those players, he hasn't exactly excelled at either of those roles.

Regarding CEY, it is easy to forget that he has only played 17 games of AFL, spread over a number of years.
Watching the replay from Thursday night (for the fourth time) I am appreciating his game more and more. Apart from his brain-fart handball, he did a LOT right!
