From The Advertiser this morning:

DELISTED Power forward Wade Champion has been added to the 14 players invited to crosstown rival Adelaide's rookie training camp.

Also added to the original squad is Glenelg utility Lucas Block, bringing the number of players who attended the first day of camp yesterday to 16.

Champion, 20, failed to play an AFL game with Port after being drafted with the 57th pick at the 2002 national draft.

Any thoughts on these 2 blokes? I must say I'm a little surprised at Champion's call up. I wonder if this was an Alan Stewart 'directive'.

Cant see either getting a spot ahead of Grundy, Pearce, Fisher or Juniper. Depends on the PSD and how many of our first preferences get pinched though. Certainly cant hurt to have a couple of other options just in case.

You would have to think Stewart had some influence here - perhaps he really rates him and feels the guy has just been unlucky with injuries

When Wade Champion was with Port, he constantly had hamstring injuries, would he be worth the risk of a pick?

Andrew Russell had a strenuous fitness regime at Port and it could be said that Wade was being pushed too hard in his rehabilitation. Players should only come back when they know they're completely rehabilitated, not when they think they are.

Unfortunately when you're pushing for a spot in an AFL side you'll do anything to prove your fitness, including playing when you're not up to it and thus doing yourself further damage.

IMO at this stage there are far better choices for a rookie listing than Wade. Give him a year or two to develop in the SANFL without the added pressure of being on an AFL list and then consider him, but I wouldnt risk him this year.

You honestly wouldn't think the AFC would waste their time or get the kids hope up if it wasn't genuine.

But why so late with the invite - has he been injured or something?
He was delisted quite some time ago now??

Well he certainly has been that. He seems to have been non-stop injured since Port drafted him.

I doubt that we need another one of those on our list - unless Stewart knows something that isn't obvious to anyone else.

To say Champion suffered constantly with injuries at his time at Port is untrue. Altho his first year he only played the one or two league and 3 or 4 reserves games because of injury, his 2004 season he spent basically injury free.

He played 15 league games for the stats of 142 disposals, 50 marks, 11 goals and once in the best players playing as a roaming forward (similar to Bocks forward line role at the Crows early on) and spent a few games in the reserves as well. He only missed a couple games this year with injury. When i saw him play he was pretty uninspiring and definately doesnt seem to come across as someone that could end up an AFL regular. Think Bock but a bit worse.

He had a prime chance to impress this year at West without Bradshaw and Sam Fisher up forward but he was average at best.

Its obviously a Stewart choice that one as he had his eye on Champion for 2-3 years before he was drafted as well.

Lucas Block is a player tho.

Your wrong their mate, Wade was hampered with injuried this whole season as well as last. He had a shoulder injury that he was carrying all which slowed him down in a big way, and i mean a big way. he had surgery on it about a month ago and should be ready to go a 100% very soon. But mark my words he is a very talented player and is definetly worth the risk.

I actually spoke to his mum today and from what she said there is a pretty good chance he will be rookied, she seems prett sure from what the club told Wade.

Also Scott Lewis is a very big chance to be rookied, his a medium sized wingman, forward from Westies.

Wooshta is totally correct about Wade Champion. He played under difficulties with his shoulder injury. He had hardly played for over a season and naturally started slowly, but was looking better with each game until a further injury near the end of the season. He's only just turned 20, I think, and has plenty to offer. Both Adelaide clubs have seen something in him (or just Alan Stewart), so there must be something there.

More........? ;)

v. impressive toward the end of last year with the tige's when he was finally given the chance. Was BOG in a couple of games iirc (30+ possies?).

An inside midfielder with excellent hands and loves a goal. Crows have been interested for a while. Could do worse than give him a go.

Were those stats in the league side?

Whats his height, weight, and speed like?? - whats his playing style like??

They most certainly were, got 27 and 30 touches in his two best games kicking 2 goals in each, and he is only 18. The guy is a top player imo, a clear gem who is the best of all our midfield rookie invities.

I would go for Block, Grundy, Pearce

How many do we pick up??? If we rookie list 4, I would go for Block, Grundy, Pearce/Ware and Juniper.

can only go for 3 of those because we have 4 spots available and one of them is already taken by Rowan Andrews.

yeah that would be right, Crows going after our discards....Bode, Biglands, Champion....it reminds me a bit of West Adelaide and Adelaide City in the national soccer league - West Adelaide could never beat Adelaide City because they kept on picking up Adelaide City's discards

Yep, but just like the Crows beat Port Power to a premiership...West Adelaide Hellas won a National League before Adelaide City did. ;)
