Round 14
Kangaroos v St. Kilda
Gold Coast Stadium 7.10PM Saturday

Kosi, Gardiner & Schneider should be right for next week but the question is would you bring in Kosi & Schneider straight away? Lyon said there are no sacred cows in the side including Riewoldt, and his recent tough stance on players could mean time for a run in the 2's. Word is Dal is copping a very hard tag and struggling and Milney is just going about his business. Gardiner should just walk back into the side.

I say stick with the side, not to make too many changes and try and gain some stability. I wouldn't drop McEvoy, keep him in for another week and play him up forward with Allen and Riewoldt.

In: Gardiner
OUT: possibly Geary

We could use Dal's poise against the Roos. With McIntosh out we can play McEvoy another week, I've been against playing him this year but now he's blooded we may as well follow through.

Assuming Lenny pulls up okay, question would be who to drop for Dal and/or Gardiner.

Most of the obvious choices played well, Gwilt was good, Eddy also.

Tough call, but my picks would be

In: Dal Santo, M. Gardiner
Out: McQualter, Allen

Picking my side using http://www.footymagnets.com/stkilda.htm I came up with:
B: Blake Hudghton Baker
HB: Gram S. Fisher C. Jones
C: Dal Santo Harvey Montagna
HF: Goddard Riewoldt Armitage
F: Milne Koschitzke McEvoy
R: King Hayes Ball

Int: M. Gardiner Gwilt Birss McQualter

Emg: Demptser Allen Eddy

In: Baker Dal Santo Milne Koschitzke M. Gardiner Birss
Out: Dempster Allen Eddy C. Gardiner Geary Gilbert

Schneider and X. Clarke a week in the reserves before they come back
Gilbert clearly isn't 100%, needs a rest. Dempster and Charlie (despite a ripper vs Swans) haven't impressed me. Allen, Eddy and Geary have been great for youngsters but unfortunately need to make way for senior players if we are going to win.

Massive Game.

If we win it could really set us up for a run to the finals, would be a huge bonus if we make it with the inexperienced side. If Collingwood lose today, they're suddenly pulled back and a second spot opens up. :thumbsu:

Time to take the oppurtunity, we have the easiest draw out of the contenders:

Roos - Gold Coast - Winnable but i'd have the Roos as favorites
Carlton - Dome - Winnable
Hawthorn - Dome - Probably a loss
Eagles - Subi - Definitely Winnable
Port - Dome - Definitely Winnable

Would love to have Dal back in the side but from all reports today Dal didn't do anything to warrant a call up, if he is called up that would look really bad and really wouldn't send across a message.

Milney was back to his melbourne form as well.

Schneider and M Gardiner will not be available if common sense prevails - both out with hammies and with a weeks break coming up, they shouldn't play.

Lenny should be fine, only had back spasms. Not sure on Kossi, but must be close.

In: Kossi, Dal
Out: ?[Depends on structure - ie if Kossie needs to ruck]

Leave Milne in the VFL for another week: give more games to Allen, McEvoy, Jones, Eddy, Geary, Gwilt etc.

I think if Fergo is fit, he will be considered at Allen's expense.

PS - McQualter showed alot of hardness last game...keep him in

Playing the kids is all very well, but if we'd played any team other than Freo on Friday (Melbourne and Essendon exceptions) we would have bee thrashed. We need to include senior players like Kosi, Dal and Milne if we want to have any chance of beating North and making the 8. If we did make the finals with the kids in it would be a bonus, but the chances of that are very slim. There is a time and a place for playing kids and it is not in season defining games, and if we lose to North our season is over.

I thought Jarryd Allen presented very well for what must be one of the toughest possies to debut at (Full Forward). His hands were good and he will get more of the ball when the players feeding the forwards recognise him as a genuine leading forward.

If we can bring Kosi in and play three talls up forward and structure the small / mediums so that these three aren't so crowded then we could have a forward line.

I'm not sure Charlie Gardiner is the way to go long term and it is his spot that Allen would be taking.

I agree to wait on Schneider and Milne, I'd bring in Dal Santo without a second thought - now that the point has been emphatically made.

I have Birss in my top 22 and I am expecting his return this week as well.

B: Baker/Gwilt Hudghton Blake
HB: Gram Fisher Goddard
C: McQualter Hayes Dal Santo/X.Clarke
HF: C.Gardiner Riewoldt Birss
F: Milne Koschitzke Ferguson
Foll: King Ball Harvey
Int: M.Gardiner Jones Armitage Eddy

Lets be honest, Sean Dumpster is doing an awful job on small forwards and has to go. If X is ready, stick him in, if not, put Dal Santo in. For all Milne's ____ups, we do need him. If Baker's not fit, Gwilt would retain his place, but Gwilt missed a lot of targets off half-back and looks out of place. Didn't like that the papers put him in our best. Allen and McEvoy were good but not great, while Eddy is the new Hamill!

Open for discussion/criticisms

this week will be tough on selectors, dal will probably come back in at expense of allen, i think Mcenvoy played well enough to keep his spot so did eddy. I hope that the selector don't go overboard in changing the team. The new players played with a great deal of heart and commitment which can only improve the team.

I expect:

In : M Gardiner / Dal Santo

Out : Gilbert / Geary

(if the game were played in Melbourne I would have also brought in Milne for C Gardiner)

I don't give a rats about the 8.

We have no chance of getting into a pre-lim so why not plan for the future...

we have beaten dud teams all year (bar Sydney), and we are no good.

Blood the youth, keep the hacks in the VFL...

McEvoy was good around the ground, but didn't have a single hit out. He clearly goes out for Gardiner.

i think allen did enough imo to keep his spot i thought he looked promising at times on the lead and although mcevoy showed a bit id say hed be a more likely out for gardiner then allen. It wil be hard to juggle it all when kozi is back because id like to see allen and mceboy get a bit more time in the seniors but will be hard with kozi and gardiner back in the team. Even though dal was reportedly quiet think we have to bring him back for hayes next week need his class and hopefully schneids and milney. huge game for us because if we lose this one will be that one step behind and struggle to make up ground. Wasnt too impressed with the win - happy with the 4 points but and hopefully we can kickstart a good 2nd half of the yr similar to last yr and make a run at the finals 9th will just be very disapointing.

Milne's problems playing away from Melbourne are well documented, so leave him at Casey for another week of 23 touches 4 goals. Dal must come back in, especially if Hayes doesn't come up.

If Kosi comes in, either Allen or Charlie Gardiner need to go. I don't really want to see any of the three debutants dropped, although McEvoy was the least impressive.

In: Kosi, Dal Santo
Out: C Gardiner, Geary

We have too many players who don't always play badly, and are OK to use if we need them, but they will never get to the level of a Luke Ball, a Sam Fisher, or even a Dal Santo.
Some of them are more multi-skilled than others which makes them more useful as emergencies, and who offer the occasional glimpse of potential. The trouble is we tend to judge these guys on their previous performance ( wow Gwilt was good this week ) but we should be comparing them to S Fisher or Goddard if we want to select a winning team. A team of merely competant players will not win ( or even play) finals.

Gwilt , Mc Qualter, Dempster, C Gardner, Ferguson, L Fisher, Fiora, Raph, Rix, probably all fit this criteria. In their current form Blake and Birss are slightly better than this group. For Milne it depends whether they travel or not.

Allen and Armitage and Geary seem to be already at a level similar to the above group but have potential for future improvement. Because of this potential they should be played ahead of the above group. Eddy also looked pretty close.

McEvoy is a bit different, he is probably OK in some positions, but I think they need to be very selective about who he goes up to ruck against.

So for me the ins are:
Dal, Birss, Baker ( if fit) , X ( if fit) Birss. Gardner ( If fit)
Outs (Emergency) : McQualter, Eddy, McEvoy , C Gardner, Gwilt

surly the match committee wouldnt consider milne. Hasnt had a kick interstate for years. with st kildas record interstate could do without that dud running around taking up a valuable spot off a young kid

Gees - I think McEvoy and Allen played better than any game I have seen from Kosi this year (bar the Brisbane one).

I think Allen was v impressive and must stay in. C Gardiner out for mine.

Eddy - I don't know about the new Hamill, but I saw a lot of Frankie Peckett in him.

McQalters aggression was also very impressive!

For mine it would be:

In: Dal Santo (even if he is tagged then Ball/Montagna might not be), M Gardiner, Baker, Kosi (just), Birss/Schneider/Milne (I think we need one of the last two playing).

Out: C Gardiner, Gwilt (did not impress me that much, maybe being too harsh), Geary, McEvoy (only cause Kosi scrapes in), McQalter (just).

I don't know, huge selection dilemma's, it is a MUST win tho. Could really put us back in the hunt!

They may have played better but Kosi has kicked goals , and they are literally the GOAL of the game. We can look at stats and form all we want but unless someone steps up and boots the ball between the sticks it is all for nothing. And hardly anyone in the saints is doing this. ( Gehrig is still in the top 5 goal kickers this year).

Five of our top six goalkickers on the season didn't play Friday night (Milne, Koschitzke, Gehrig, Schneider, Birss). While I have said that Milne shouldn't probably come back for a game interstate, Kosi should if fit, and I would have no problem with Birss' inclusion.

At the moment with Schneider and Kosi fit and Hayes doubtful, I have

In: Dal Santo, Schneider, Koschitzke
Out: Geary, C Gardiner, Hayes

If Michael Gardiner is fit, he comes in for McEvoy, who was not effective as a ruckman last week. Considering the importance of the game, we need our best side on the park.

These changes would not surprise. With Allen's game being serviceable as a lead-up option we don't need Chucky for this game (who somehow got himself into trouble with almost every possession). I'd actually prefer Fergie if he is fit and Kosi and Gardi don't come up (if Gardi plays I'd like Macca to play in front of Chucky and Fergie).

Gwilt would be lucky imo to remain in the side, but he does wash Ross's car which helps. I can't believe that many people had him playing a good game. Freo kicked to his opponent on a number of occasions, the two kicks that actually went forward floated and missed the target (his strength?), and when he came in to get contact on Farmer in the goalsquare he missed the body completely and it was lucky Farmer was having an ordinary night (dropped it cold).

Suprising people want Dal Santo back yet not Milne. Whats the point in the reserves then? Dal Santo hardly showed enough to warrant selection this week.

I am a bit worried they will play Milne out of phase.

Example: Played good for Casey - in against Kangaroos
Gold Coast is interstate so Milne plays poorly dropped against Hawks
Plays good for Casey, - In for West Coast at Subi etc.

Guys, I watched Gilbert for 95% of the game. While I have no doubts over Gilbo's ability & intent, he is either either still injured or more unfit than me. He'll need time to get back to his best & I think the club owes it to him, and needs to give him that chance. Out: Gilbo
