Hmm well weren’t things easier in the offseason and we didn’t have a game of footy to worry about each week?

Looks like a few may be out next week. Harris, Hugh and we await the MRO on a couple of others.

Dunno what we will do if Harris misses a stretch but I think we’re about to find out. I guess they start with Joyce and see how that goes.

We miss Hugh so much when he isn’t there with his ball use. Zac probably takes his minutes and maybe Annable comes in.

Sounds like Draper is close but maybe the extra week with the bye means we might err and wait till the following week.

So in summary I’ve got no idea, but perhaps as simple as:

Out: Harris, Hugh, ZZ (if Draper is fit)
In: Joyce, Annable, Draper (if fit)

ZZ was Andrews understudy during off season apparently so I'd continue pumping games into him.

I'm a big fan of Joyce btw but its time to invest beyond him now. ZZ looks ready.

Joyce for Andrews. Like for like

Annable in for McCluggage. But also could bring in Marshall and push Levi and others more inside.

Similarly if Bailey is suspended (I haven't seen video of that incident yet) Marshall or McLachlan could come in.

On balance I think we need a lock down small in. We were missing that little bit of balance between offence and defence. Would love Answerth or even Brain in. But who to leave out is hard. Kiddy is the obvious one unless we push Fletcher back up the field

Also, this whole "Brisbane will never lose a game all season" media brigade can go quiet now. If a club is good enough to take it up to us, they are a fair chance.

We carried too many half fit crew into this game in my opinion - Rayner, Coleman for example. I think players got their reality check early and we'll have a more sober, pragmatic group going forward.

Andrews- ZZ
Draper in for ruck
McCluggage - Annable
Coleman - Answerth (this may not happen as Fagan usually backs players in)

Kiddy will be interesting. Clearly he’s in the best 23 once he’s up and going, but he was off the pace last night. Maybe a few weeks in the ressies would be good to get some more game time in his legs, although if they were going to do that they probably wouldn’t have played him in the first game.

I agree with others that we look unbalanced without a lockdown small down there with no Starc/Noah back there. I’d be playing Noah, but again will he benefit from the extra week(s) with the bye to follow?

After both our teams had comfortable victories in Round 0 I am predicting a good game next week.
Unfortunately the Dogs got up in the Swans GF Demo Derby.

Answerth has to play next week imo. Sydney have too many good mid/fwds like Papley, Heeney and Warner that we can't afford to go in with the same lack of defensive pressure we had last night. Especially with the risk that there's more balls coming to ground in D50 with Andrews out.

I'd likely bring Answerth in for McCluggage and look to spread Clug's midfield minutes around between Bailey/Rayner/Fletcher/LAshcroft.

Levi to play Clugs role and probably surprise a few with how good he is (liked his game vs the dogs)
Marshall in
Answerth in
Joyce in for Harris

Might be in the minority but I would drop Fort rather than ZZ for Draper when the time comes. I think it makes more sense to have a dedicated backup ruck rather than play our usual primary guy in the backup role. Plus ZZ looked fairly mobile around the ground as well which suits the new rules

I tend to agree. I think the new rules favour ruckmen like that who can cover the ground a bit better and are better athletically.

If ZZ continues in that role we need to have more confidence in him and have him play more minutes. You’re handicapping your team each week effectively playing “half” a man down before you bounce the ball. Makes it even worse copping an early injury like last night.

Can we bring Draper in and move ZZ to defence to cover Harris?

Marshall in to play wing and Levi to play inside to cover Clug.

We need to bring Answerth in however knowing Fagan's coaching style, he is more likely to leave Kiddy in the side until he finds form rather than make him find form in the VFL.

Im a little shocked when I saw the tog% for ZZ. Was definitely handicapping ourselves going down to 3.5 on the bench.

Really re-emphasised to me that the back up ruck has to be able to play another role. There's zero point having a pure ruck backup who theb just sits on the bench. They have to be able to play forward, mid or wing at least to justify the spot

My concern is we’re too tall and lose a running player, playing two rucks.

I also have concerns about Oscar Allen having lost his mobility and athleticism.

I thought Allen started to look like he was warming into the game the longer he went.

But agree it comes back the same old issue. If the forwards and mids cant pressure and defend we will get cut apart by the good teams. The best option is a forward who can rest in the ruck a few minutes. The forward play is the most important bit. Ruck time just needs to offer a contest.

I raised some concerns with Oscar when I saw him in that Carlton trial but quite rightfully was told to wait to see how he goes in the real stuff.

He looked better as the game went on, but to me his biggest problem is he looks to have lost his mobility/agility. To me he doesn’t seem to be able to get any height when jumping at the ball.

Has he lost that entirely because of his injuries or is it a temporary thing whilst he works his way back? Definitely a watch for me.

That's a bold view off one game.

I think (hope) we'll move away from two rucks once Allen is a bit more settled and Draper is ready to play. ZZ had low ToG because we didn't need a fourth tall in the backline or the forward line, so he didn't have much do when Fort was out there. But we also didn't want to use Allen to pinch hit in the ruck in his first game back, and Fort's not really useful anywhere except the ruck unfortunately.

Draper is a more natural ruck/fwd, so we'll be able to use guys like Allen or Gallop to pinch hit more effectively (with Draper resting forward). Both ZZ and Draper are more atheletic than Fort so if we want to keep ZZ in the team, we could even rotate between them with the other to push up to the wing/be there for the bailout kick down the line (similar to the role Hipwood previously played).

Kiddy needs to get match fit in 2s and gain his confidence back on hitting targets while tired too. His 2 turnovers resulting in Sam Davidson's goal was a clear sign he needed more time away from best 23. He looked tentative and not in the razor sharp mode he's known for.

He'll be better for the run. He showed patches of his brilliant self and agree that as the game wore on he got noticebly more tired and it affected his kicking. The double turnover patch really hurt us.

Like a lot of guys last night, I'm sure he'd want a crack against the Swans next week to learn from the loss.
