Changes for Saints

I dont know why i am bothering to make this statment because the same shit happens every week. Sadly for me as a mod i have to keep reading it so... here it goes again.

Maybe check the Bendigo reports before going off too early with welections.
Then maybe watch the game once or twice and see who is in form rather than deciding it is time for all your favourites or hyped up players to get a run.

From Bendigo yesterday only Daniher and maybe Tyson Slattery should be considered. Myers injured his ankle and Jetta despite getting in the best 6 ( the joke that is the best 6 for Bendigo continues) was ordinary and he squibbed a few contests yesterday. No way could i be putting him in. When it is your turn to go then you simply have to go and take one for the team.

Then we have Welsh who some seem to think needs to come back in despite the side player a lot better last night. Welsh has been ordianary since his game where he got away with holding Judd all night and his foot skills in the last three gaes have been very ordinary.

After that maybe we can then get players back in that match the positions of the players going out.;)

For me if Lovett is fit then he comes in for Quinn. I know Quinn was pretty good but i agree with Daytripper in the fact that next weeks game will be a bit tougher pressure wise and Lovett is simply a better option playing the same spot that Quinn played last night.

I also think Dempsey is in trouble. For a half back he has been extremly loose for a few weeks now and his form has been mixed.

I don't think Winders will come up. He still looked very tight in the lower back when he had to pick up a footy at training on Friday. Given his history a no risk approach is the way to go.

He has been run down from behind alot this year resulting in a turnover. Seems to lack awareness of what is coming up behind him.

I think you will find it is around 7 times in in 17 games and it is not any more times than Stanton or Lovett have been.
Like i have said above he seems to be slowing down looking for a handball a bit more over the last 4 or 5 weeks and another issue the side has is the lack of talk out in the middle as a lot of players are being run down.
It would also help if a few players tried to shepherd rather than running forward looking for cheap possessions.

Just on Dempsey, where do you think his best spot will be ant? He has obviously played off half back all year but do you think he will end up on the wing or in the midfield?

Not unless he can develop the motor to do it.

I really think Hooker should be considered to play on Riewoldt. He did a solid job on him earlier this year.

Also we cant go in with Lovett-Murray rucking against 2 big, strong ruckman in Gardiner and King, I think Bellchambers is a must this week and he did perform manfully in round 22 against King last year.

IN - injuries permitting

Lovett: needs no justification

Winderlich: ditto

Lloyd: get the best defender away fro Neagle and damage will be done. He has also been very good around the grounds at times and I think the players walk taller when he is out there.

Hooker: need to help Ryder in the ruck and like the extra dimension own back or up forward.

OUT - forget the future, we need to give ourselves the best chance to win

Quinn: too much hand ball. He can't use it well enough often enough and we need to be as clean as possible because the tackilng will be fierce and we cant afford to be putting each other under pressure.

Slattery: has the same problem as Quinn. Even though St Kilda is one of the few teams that have players that Slattery is suited to beating, the positives are less significant than the negatives. When we were static off half back the passage of play often involved Slattey accepting a handball receive (often fumbling) and then handballing to another player and putting that player under pressure.

Atkinson: it is not a reflecton on his game last night. It is just to get the ins in. He wasn't as good as NLM and McPhee who can do similar jobs down back.

Hocking: another one week only dropping to allow all of the ins to get in the side. He has been quieter than Lonergan so he is the unlucky one.

Dempsey is saved because if we are going to beat St Kilda we are going to need him exploding off half back. Welsh isn't playing well enough to displace Lonergan of Hocking so he misses out.

Yeh I agree it would be about 7 times. And each time its a carbon copy. Maybe something for him to work on. Hocking getting caught has really stood out, havnt noticed it as much with Lovett and Davey, not disputing that thats not the case.

I haven't watched the game in enough detail yet to make a call on changes as yet, but thought the Quinn debate was interesting.

I can certainly understand when Daytripper and Ant say that Quinn should be dropped for a match against a tough disciplined side against St.Kilda. It could really harm his confidence whilst hurting the team on the scoreboard.

However I think he should stay in because:

- We MUST approach the St.Kilda game with a 'win at all costs' attitude. Quinn oozes that as much as any other player on our list.

- We MUST attack St.Kilda at every opportunity. Quinn does this.

- We MUST NOT go into our shells and chip the ball around. Quinn takes the game on regardless of how many times he fails.

- We MUST continue to create a team environment based on merit. Quinn has earnt his spot through solid VFL form and a good game last night.

I hope we decide to take the Saints on next week and that must start at the selection table.

I agree that we need some harder bodies in at the contest but not a the expense of playing the way we play best.

I agree. We are not going to beat St. Kilda at their own game. Although we do need those hard bodies the way we can beat the Saints is through extra run, try to run them off their legs. They will try to curtail our run and turn it into a scrap. We must play on at almost all costs and guys like Lovett and Quinn have to keep running.

In: Lovett Winderlich
Out: McVeigh Davey

I would drop Davey and bring in Jetta. Davey has had a tough year back from a knee and isn't finishing off that well.
He will be a great inclusion next year for us. If Lovett, Lloyd and Winders are fit then they should all come back in.
The outs again are hard, I think Houli deserves to keep his spot. McVeigh would be one I'd consider dropping but we need some strong bodies against the Saints.

Daniher should definitely get his chance. This is a game that we would not have pencilled in and a big assult is mounting for the last two games, so let lloyd rest up another week and give the kid his opportunity. Oh and just for the record i think this is a game we have a sneaky chance of winning.

Let me see if I can get the formula correct for these threads:

Outs: Usual Scapegoats +Injured/Suspended players

Ins: Favourites/Players back from injury (irrespective of form)

What are the purposes of these threads? It used to be to try and predict the changes which is sensible. These days it is just selections based on personal agendas. Why?

If he has one issue in recent weeks it is the fact that he seems to be getting the ball and slowing down looking for hanball options ( a problem that a lot of the team has at the moment). He needs to start backing himself to kick the ball rather than looking to dish off a handball.

This is my main beef with Hocking. He does it more than anyone else, and it has been very damaging as our other defenders have been streaming forward, leaving loose men goal side.

He will always be on the edge of our best 22 becasue he is not a star but currently i would have him at half back in front of Dempsey simply becasue he knows where his man is and he pays his opponent the respect he deserves.

I agree, he has been better than Dempsey since the half way mark of the season, but his best hasn't been as good as Courtney's. At this stage of development, I'd prefer us to play the Dempsey as he offers more in the long run (IMO).

I am not sure if a few of you understand the concept that the best 22 as far as a tem goes is very rarely the best 22 ability wise on your list.
A lot seem to want their favourites or the hyped up players and you seem to highlight the 2 or 3 errors of blokes who you dont rate.

Give me a little credit, I'm more than happy to concede when I am wrong about players. IMO With our current game plan, Hocking in defense doesn't fit structurally atm, I would be more than happy for him to be played forward, as he can be quite creative around goals and create a contest
, but his indecision and lack of awareness have hurt badly since the Richmond game.
