Changes: Gold Coast vs Fold Coast

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

The half forwards and half backs are obsolete now all we have is forwards centres and backs.
So now it is centre full forward or centre 3/4 forward or 1/4 to 50 line centre forward flank or backside 270 flipside left right goodnight over there in the corner

Confused? The 80 year old over there is.

Yeah I suppose it’s a question of when you decide enough is enough, bite the bullet and start making changes.

For me that point was last week. Two shocking losses in a row, and 11 straight quarters of unacceptable football going back to the Derby.

I can see why the match committee aren’t at that point, though. I’m more angry at the treatment of Brander. That’s my major gripe this week.

Brander had to come out with a wet game predicted.

Will be interesting if we drop another tall if it is wet. Oscar or Schofield for Smith or Mutimer.

It’s important that we work out now what our round 14 team will be and who will make way for guys that are still weeks away. It’s not like there’s going to be other injuries or changes in form between now and then.

And it’s not like this thread is supposed to be about the changes for today’s game.

Doing the same thing and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity. Or something like that.
Embley reckons Simpson spot on to do nothing, leave team unchanged.

I feel this though is the last chance for some players to find form and play their role. Simo has held faith but conversations this week would have said 'pull your socks up and get cracking because we have guys in form itching for a game and your spot'. We can't ignor good WAFL form and be happy with poor AFL form much longer.

My concern is that we'll beat up an inexperienced Gold Coast this week and an injury riddled St Kilda next week, and suddenly the Mastens & Darlings of the squad will have new credits in the bank. Reality is if we can't afford another lean stretch later in the season just because Darling and the like are undroppable.

We're in our premiership window, lets make the most of it.

One alternative is that we beat up Gold Coast and St Kilda and those guys that are in the doldrums at the moment (a lot more than the two you named) find some form and confidence

Allen can't yet rip a game open singlehandedly in a quarter or two?
Basically, there's no one else as good as Darling to step in.
If Darling can't get the ball, or do something with it, a good chance nobody else can.
Same can be said for JK. No ones calling for JK to be dropped.
He hasn't set the world on fire either.
Yet I understand the frustration with Darling. He frustrates the bejesus outta me at times.
This is the best 22, you have to get them to click, to regain the chemistry, to run into form.
What's the alternative - to chop and change each week, have revolving doors just for the sake of it?
Hopefully, they will run into form over next few games, Redden back, Rioli, then NN,
then roll into the business end with a better ledger.
Watching that Gossage vision made me realise how much I miss the little Frenchman up forward!!!

Darling needs to be dropped. for the sole purpose to make him realise it's not a given he'll be in the team and hopefully it will smack some hunger and drive into him. I want Darling in the team. I just think he needs a serious wake up call that what he's been putting up isn't even close to acceptable, something only a dropping to the twos can deliver.

It worked for Embley and Wirrapanda in our 05-06 runs and it needs to happen with Darling. It should have happened in 16-17 and it didn't. It should happen this year.

From Simmo's presser it sounds like Jake Waterman was probably going to play but is still having trouble with injury - perhaps O Allen got a reprieve after all.
Did sound like that but Waterman is listed to play and didn't have any ice or signs of quad trouble last week.

Maybe he was thinking of Brady Grey who isn't playing for the 2nds this week?

Mallen is a beautiful kick but WAFL does give you more time to balance and deliver. Other than his kicking i have to agree that there wasnt a lot to inspire me.The thing i see least of is aggression. If youve got a bit of size and a bit of skill then a ferocious attack on the ball can waltz you up to the front of the selection queue. That line wasnt directed solely at Mallen by the way.I really cant understand why WC seem to give so little emphasis to tackling;and not just tackling but when to tackle. If you cant get a kick;get a tackle!!! If any player can come off the ground with 10+ tackles they have gone a long way to cementing a position.
Well you've described Schofield and Venebles WAFL performances perfectly. Schofield averaged 13 disposals 5 marks and 2 tackles and Venners 10.5 disposals, 1.5 marks, 0.5 points (no goals) and 6.5 tackles and sailed straight into AFL selection.

MAllen 24 disposals, 4.5 marks, 4.25 tackles but improving with each game and last game 24 disposals 2 marks 8 tackles and a goal.

I'm not sure if you've got the wrong players or the wrong years - neither of them were dropped during those years. Wirra was dropped once in 2004, Embley not since 2002.

Any player who plays high half forward with a bit of mid time would be watching Rioli back in training and thinking - If i don't get a mocve on I will be moved on.
One ruck is a stop gap til Nic is back.
We have some great choices to make.

I agree in that something needs to be done, but maybe he needs to get some clean delivery into space, to advantage once or twice, if he can shake off the meat sandwich he's been strapped to in the past two games.
It's maybe not that he's playing bad, the opp. on him are playing good!?
hope to see a resurgent Jack tonight!...but if he plays well, then posters will say, oh it's only the Suns!

Confidence in footy is a strange thing, you'd assume the best team in the league from last season would start this season chock full of it.

Something has gone seriously wrong mentally with a few players - hopefully they are all back on the wagon soon!

Yep and they are the 2 changes i made on paper above..
They make sense on that paper. Especially now Oscar is the pinch hitting fwd/ruck.

Please explain to me why waterman is injured for us but not for the wafl team?

I smell bs from simpson

It's also amazing how Simmo's "double standards" arise when we're not traveling so well.

For example, late in 2017, following a narrow loss to Collingwood that left us sitting outside the eight:

The following week:

Following an underwhelming 2018 JLT series:

Amazingly there were no double standard sightings during the 2018 season. They only seem to have cropped up again recently.

Naturally, you're actually completely reinforcing what I am saying. Last year, a combination of higher selection standards and an increase in selection pressure meant there was much less of these speculative selections or players being able to remain in the team after prolongued, subpar performances. Players had to lift their playing standard and output because if they didn't, they wouldn't be playing. You would find the same thing in 2015.

I am actually flattered you felt the need to go way to to 2017 to dig up my old posts.

Miguel Sanchez, aka, superfan ;) haha

You're really going to accuse Simmo of "double standards" despite the fact we debuted the most players in the comp just last year?

Debuting players is one thing. Historically though, we hold our kids to a higher selection standard then our senior players. And there a few young guys (like Venebles, who Simpson seems to like) that get more leeway then others.

If Venebles is being selected, and retained, for purposes of continuity, Brander, by the same rationale, should be afforded the same leeway.

Now I would completely understand if Venebles had come back via the WAFL and dominated. But his returns didn't warrant selection. Not at all. Especially not when a guy like Waterman can get the axe after a bad opening game and then put up 13 goals in 3 weeks in the WAFL and not be able to get into the side.

How man times over the last few years have we seen one our kids get the axe after a bad game, and yet a senior guy like Darling can have a prolonged period playing badly and be in absolutely no danger of being dropped?

And I am sure none of us will ever forget Simpson infamous "credits in the bank remark" in relation to the 5(?) Game block where Mark Me Cras went goalless, and was never axed.

I completely stand by my comments.

I can't. Does make his comments yesterday sound weird to say the least.
This was posted during the WAFL game last weekend and something was mentioned about it on one of the evening tv news channels as well, so I don't think there's anything fishy about it at all.
Claremont ran out of legs and the Eagles talls played well in the last.
Waterman’s hamstrings still causing him problems.
The last three goals first a snap to Waterman (and I agree with his hammys)
