Ken has said previously that our backline looks too tall - I wouldn't be surprised if O'Shea stays in and Hombsch goes out when Carlile and Trengove come back. Giving us a back line of:

FB: Jonas Carlile Impey
HB: Pittard Trengove O'Shea

I/C: Broadbent

Broadbent is versatile and can play a variety of roles - perfect to come off the bench and relieve Pittard/O'Shea when they are tired. Hombsch has played well for the season, but it wouldn't surprise me if he was going to be dropped before Carlile and Trengove got injured anyway for tactical reasons. If our defense can do a good job without Carlile and Trengove, it'll do a better one when we replace Hombsch and Cassisi with both of them. Especially if Westhoff drops back into defense on occasion and plays the sweeper role in between the FB and HB lines.

In the centre, Moore simply HAS to come in for that performance. We'll need him against Sydney, and cutting his teeth against Collingwood will be a good test. But playing him as the sub would be a mistake. I'd give that role to Young - because he is good at most things but not exceptional at any, he's the perfect player for a sub role. Runs hard. It'll be between him and Newton who gives way for Trengove the following week if he's fit. Our best midfield:

C: White Cornes Polec
R: Lobbe Boak Ebert

I/C: Moore

Then forward. I know people will keep banging on about another key forward, but it's not going to happen. Not this year.

HF: Hartlett Westhoff Gray
FF: Wingard Schulz Monfries

I/C: ?

I left the interchange player blank here because you could quite easily play another midfielder instead of a forward/mid. Possibly a Newton or Young. Whoever fills this spot, the other player will be the sub.

That's a team that can win a grand final. Mark my words.

Moore is a certainty.

He was a class above most of the players today.

Newton, O'Shea, Stewart all very unlucky if this is the case

I think Newton would be unlucky, and it won't surprise me if he keeps his spot in the side. Not sure how you'd fit all of Moore, Newton and Young into a side though, and given Moore's blinder today, I'd find it difficult not to give him a shot against the Pies next week.

As for the other two, I don't think they'd be unlucky at all. O'Shea tries to take the game on but his disposal is absolutely terrible too often, and his decision making leaves a lot to be desired. Wouldn't want to take out Hombsch either, especially considering we'll need to have men on Cloke, Reid, Goldsack and Witts/Grundy at times. Collingwood are a very tall and strong team. Hombsch is almost a perfect matchup on Reid imo. Stewart kicked a few goals early on against the Dees, but he disappeared completely in the second half. I'd rather bring Monfries in who has shown in the two years he's been at port, that he steps up in the big games.

Personally I'd like...
IN: Moore, Carlile
OUT: Cassisi, Newton

Polec sub

Logan and Monfries to have a run in the maggies since they both haven't played much footy in the last 3-4 weeks.

Moore's put his hand-up after that performance. Kicked three goals, the equal highest for the game. Hasn't kicked a lot of goals for Port. Be handy if he became a more regular goal kicker.

Moore must come in. He is an afl player - would love to see him string a heap of games together.
Yeah. Get him to play the back end of th season. Def a good afl player. Tough contested footy player.

If Butch had Shaw's numbers then I think that would be enough for Ken to bring him in. Shaw and Harvey are still too raw to be brought in without risk of a massive confidence bruise or injury - I would really like Shaw in the side though.

Moore in for Newton - gives us more than Newton does at this stage.
Young as sub - plays the role well.
Stewart or Monfries - i think Gus gives us more run through the midfield but shame to lose Stewart's height and needs a run of games.

What are people's thoughts about O'Shea/Clurey through the forward line? Don't think any of our other defenders could play forward.

Let them develop in their defensive roles we don't need them going forward.

Until Trengove comes back and is the swingman/ruck etc I'd have Stewart playing forward.

Is shaw really that raw to be chucked into the deep end...?

I mean we have done it with impey

They probably don't want to blood him at such a crucial stage of the season. Not only has to deal with the pressure of trying to help the team salvage a top four spot but will also have to deal with the lofty expectations from fans who are expecting him to play at a much higher level than Butcher.

Impey, on the other hand, has played a lockdown role since day dot when the initial hope was that Butcher would finally hit his stride and play throughout the year as our second tall.

I can see the point....

But I cant see the expectation being that great on him....impey has been given a bit of leniency while he has good patches and bad patches

Yeah I agree. Would seem as though Kenny and the coaching staff are a bit reluctant towards our tall forward stocks.
