For a pick 13 or whatever he doesnt set the world on fire!
Nothing special about him at all really.

I tend to agree, I haven't seen anything special, skillful or courageous that makes me think he is a 5-10 yr player. I do like his hardness and broad shoulders, but needs to get a good season under his belt, always seems injured.

One of our youngest teams in a while , if we do well we should be proud , only 2 guys that have played more than 75 games in that team.
Spot on. Check it:

Defenders
B: McKenzie (77), Thompson (55), Lemmens (19)
HB: Tape (34), May (55), Saad (2)
Total: 242
Average: 40.33

Midfielders

C: Kolodjashnij (20), Prestia (75), Malceski (178)
R: Smith (56), Rischitelli (180), Swallow (75)
Total: 584
Average: 97.33

Forwards
HF: Hall (46), Day (66), Matera (55)
F: Miller (2), Lynch (61), Bennell (68)
Total: 298
Average: 49.66

Interchange
Martin (13), Garlett (2), Shaw (73), Gorringe (21)
Total: 109
Average: 27.25

So it looks like Malceski has been added to the midfield to add some experience through the middle after losing Ablett and Harbrow. It will be a very inexperienced team running out for the Suns on Sunday.

Sam Day has to be the luckiest footballer in the history of the AFL
Yeah agree, unfortunate his development has always been a hole filler. Defence, Ruck, Forward. I think he has been our most durable tall? I still rate him, just needs to get his confidence and mental game right. Hopefully get some stability with his position as well.

I should qualify this statement by saying I think Sam tries his guts out every game (which I'm sure puts him in the "Good" basket for Rocket)
It's more about the zero options putting pressure on his spot

What's the reason for Malceski being in the midfield? Or Kade or that matter?

Since KK was moved into the midfield/wing late last year, he's been completely mediocre. He was a great defender at the start of last year, but he just seems like wasted talent out there.

could just be that he's named there on paper. won't necissarily line up there during the game.

i think they're testing kk out in a few different roles. in the lions preseason game, he was mainly midfield. tagging rold against melb. he's fairly versatile, so i guess it depends on the match up on the day.

regarding mal, i noticed against the saints, towards the end of the game he pushed up into the midfield occasionally, getting a few of the guys higher up the ground to switch, probably for a bit more leadership and direction. can't help out too much if he's dragged down to full back away from the contest, like he has been recently. i don't mind if he's more in the midfield, whatever get him involved more.

Very worried about tomorrow we are going in with a very inexperienced team as previously mentioned. No real grunt or hard players in the side. Geelong will be hungry for a win and I think they will get one. Also GWS looked good tonight against Swans let's hope we get some of the more experienced fellows back in for that.

Agree, but on positive their 30 yr Ol Champs and their young under 23 mob is a big gap. We have pace and youth on our side. I think we will be competitive.

Where is Danny at?

I'm beginning to feel good about today, and I don't know why... I tipped Geelong, yet today I'm just getting that feeling this is where we start to string it together, no looking for a one armed Gaz, quite a few changes, another week under Rocket. Cant wait for the game.

I can picture Humphrey Bogart sitting in on our team selection in the match committee every week repeating...

Can't believe our performances so far this year. Fortunately I haven't been in Oz to be able to watch any of them. The TV would be in a hundred pieces by now. Still we are not as bad as the Lions - where are they are they at??

Going on past history at Shell Stadium and current form, I can see a 12 goal loss coming up.. We are going to get smashed. This is not going to be pretty. We need an experienced team to have any chance down at the Cattery and we have a team of bubs in. Please me be wrong :cry::cry:

Hopefully the weather will help our percentage :(
Nothing good ever comes from a trip to Geelong when you're a struggling team
It really will be one of those games where you look to see if there's any standout individual performances or evidence of disciplined team structure
Running, gut running, helping your mate, creating opportunities
If we won today it would be a win for the ages
These are the games though where things can start turning around even if you lose
I'm reminded of the terrific effort we put in at The G against Hawthorn in 2011

Geelong Cats v Gold Coast Suns
@ Simonds Stadium at 3:20pm

Last Week

*It’s Stats Time!*

Gold Coast somehow managed to top the round one effort with something even worse however… Gold Coast had 2 more scoring shots than the Saints who were crazily accurate in comparison, with a conversion rate of 66.7% to the Suns paltry 38.5%. What’s worse is that in the second half the Suns hit the scoreboard just over double the amount of times St Kilda did, only to have a conversion rate of 37.5% (12.5% in the 3rd Qtr). St Kilda had 4 more inside 50 entries proving that the Suns can create their chances but couldn't convert them. Defending was an issue and they have to learn how to curb momentum, take out that second quarter and the Suns win 69-54. One last thing… Learning a new game plan, especially for a young team is never easy. It took Fremantle half the year in 2012 to finally learn Ross Lyon’s game plan, they were 6-7 and then went 9-1 until being eliminated in the second week of finals. It’s ugly now but a few backwards steps can become leaps and bounds forward later on.

Geelong were beaten by the aforementioned Fremantle side and fell to their worst loss at Simonds since round 3, 2006. The Cats are low on confidence but they’ll be hungry to get their first win of the season and atone for that loss, especially as the cats haven’t started a season 0-3 since 2003.

The Game

It’s crucial for the Suns to get out to a good start, or at the very least be competitive and stay with the cats. Gold Coast have only scored 7 goals in the first half compared to the 16 they've kicked in the second, if the Suns can stay within touch till half time then they may be able to run over the top of the old cats. The heavily rumoured exclusion of Tom Hawkins (For which reasons are unfortunate) is very fortunate to the Suns chances of snagging a win, The cats attack won’t stretch out too far beyond Clark and will turn to more of their smaller types ie. Motlop. The main goal today win or lose is simple “Disposal Efficiency” whether it’s to a teammate or having a shot on goal, be on target !

Ones To Watch Out For

Geelong: Steve Johnson - Steve J has put the Suns to the sword in the past, especially early on averaging 27 disposals and 2 goals against the Coast. Has the ability to destroy a sides defence and confidence with his unpredictability and goal scoring habits.
Gold Coast: Harley Bennell - Was an absolute star in the last meeting against Geelong kicking an equal club record 6 goals and picking up 27 disposals. Could again be the wildcard that the cats struggle to contain or at least provide a big enough distraction to let another slip under the radar and do the damage.

Head to Head History

Played 5 - Gold Coast 1 Geelong 4
At Simonds 2 - Gold Coast 0 Geelong 2

Final Verdict

Both Geelong and Gold Coast have had poor starts to the season but it’s the quality of opposition they've faced that separates these two teams, plus the Cats haven’t lost two in a row at Kardinia Park in the same season since 2006.
