If I was to compare Shagga to a past player, it would be someone like a Doc Wheildon or an Allen Jakovich. "Flawed genius", I think, is the term. Absolute freak talent and hopefully we don't iron out his good bits in the pursuit of a more all-rounded player. Does need to lift in certain areas though. Maybe Damien Cupido is a better example.

As it’s the last time we might play Port I’d love to prepare a preview paying tribute to Kenny. But I’ll leave it to someone else to do the honours

On one hand, its tough for him because in a worse team you may as well play him for the development, but we have Kai and Charlie to get back into form and we are in the winning games business, not play as many debutants and cheer for them during losses.

On the other, he's got a great example in Kai to follow in keeping that mercurial talent and adding in more defensive application and work outside F50 to round out his contribution.

now that the dust is settled, i hope there is no more calls for day to be dropped for the rest of the year. having him back has made our forward line look much better.
I’m guilty of calling for his omission earlier in the year. But I agree - he’s been a solid contributor and structurally important since coming back (and in the few rounds before his hamstring).

I think it's his spot until/if Henry Smith is fit and ready. Would be a very nice problem to have if he can get a good run of games and find the form he had before his injury.

i dont think smith would play the role that well personally. i was very impressed with a lot of day's efforts to get to spots where he was needed and then not only bring the ball to ground when outnumbered, but to a position where the geelong players could not easily collect the loose ball on friday. i don't think smith has that natural forward craft.

id be more than happy to give smith a go in the ruck if oscar is cooked so we can see what we have.

I don't necessarily disagree - and that's where Day's experience in AFL systems help him. Smith has improved as both a ruck and a forward every year and his last full game was something to behold. Dominated the ruck and performed very well when going forward, kicking 5 goals - some from hard spots. He's a great contested mark and found marking contest after marking contest.

It was exactly what us as fans and the coaching staff have been waiting to see - the true breakout game in that ruck/forward role.

I hope he can find that form again and if he does, I am confident in saying he'll get his chance at AFL level to show he's up to it.

It's been the worst timing for Smith to be injured with O out for an extended period + Day out for 6 or so weeks.

I dont want Day dropped but with his history I wouldnt want to burn him out before finals. He is definitely someone I would consider managing at least once in the run home (not sure the best away game would be though?) to save the trip and make sure he is fit in finals.

Would also be good to see Gallop or Smith get another run in the seniors. Just so they know what they would need to do come finals

Is this still an issue when finals could be 3 games in 5 weeks?

Could maybe sit out 1 of the last 8 games but wouldn't flirt too much with his or the teams form

Yeah definitely a balance and we are historically not good at rotating like this. But I just look at his history and he last played 10+ games in a year in 2020. And has almost never played a full season. We saw him miss 6 or so weeks for us too. Just I see him structurally vital for finals so want to absolutely make sure he gets there

Rest him for the trip to Perth and hopefully Smith is available by then.
Or Gallop to get a run.

Yeah I thought about that one as the longest flight but also I see that as a tough game, its also pretty close to the pre-finals bye. Similarly Carlton game is close to the current bye.

If Im picking the middle trip its away to Collingwood. Not sure if we want to mess with things there.

Otherwise resting for a home game or against GCS?

Although, the Collingwood game may be the perfect one actually.
Because our Ruck combo against them earlier in the year which included Day got absolutely pantsed by Cameron and Cox.
So to try something different wouldn’t hurt.
Maybe 2 genuine rucks may be a good option if both Oscar and Fort are available for that one.

Cox late inclusion - then we pull our own! Would love it but be shocked if it happens

I think we'd get fined if we suddenly pull our own Cox.

I'll do it. I think I can send off Kenny with aplomb.

I'm so committed to this preview that I'm going to VOLUNTARILY commit myself to watching Carlton v Port tonight, in perhaps the greatest matchup ever: a STOPPABLE FORCE versus a MOVABLE OBJECT.
