I have a really bad feeling about this game. I hope it's just the "Sidebottom out blues" but we are going to be seriously weak through the midfield.

With Sidebottom out it does look that way but I have faith in whoever they bring into the side to have a crack.
We have a few blokes out of the 22 at the moment that if given their chance may grab it with both hands for example Broomhead/Kennedy/Dwyer.

Pendlebury, Adams and Swan will likely go head to head with Dangerfield, Douglas and Sloane.

Beams game was interesting. My only ever criticism of him for us is that because he plays so low in the congestion he tends to find and dish out backwards too much when we had Ball in there. Felt he could have played slightly more outside to break and kick. Last night he was totally inside and dishing backwards and was pretty ineffective for the most part.

86 metres gained from a player of his caliber was massive for us! On the back of that Adams receiving a job on one of their ball winners becomes crucial. To my ins and outs.

In: Broomhead & Gault
Out: Sidebottom & De Goey

From what you see and hear De Goey isn't yet able to run out a full game so he'd be the starting sub automatically again which doesn't benefit anyone, IMO. I think the extra tall gives us further potency forward of centre and gives us an avenue to exploit the Crows because their mids (with Steele out) and forwards look to have us outgunned. I'd also look to use one of Ramsay or Oxley as the sub.

I think the key for us is to continue to lower our eyes entering F50 because that's the way we're going to score this year. A mix of Gault, Cloke, White, Elliott and Fasolo hitting the scoreboard whilst we contain their midfield might get us over the line, but this is going to be extremely tough at Etihad.

Out: Sidebottom, de Goey
In: Dwyer, Witts/Gault

I haven't been able to watch any footy this weekend so I'm mainly going off the vibes around the board. Sidebottom out sucks but from all reports Dwyer tore it up in the VFL. I'm someone who believes the kids must earn their spot so don't think that either Kennedy or Broomhead deserve a game over Dwyer this week. Not to mention we're getting very light-on in experience in the middle right now. If de Goey isn't match fit then it seems that the VFL is the best place to teach him how to run out a game. Also, it seems we can stretch the Adelaide defense with a third tall. I favor Witts personally as I want him and Grundy to develop together. I think those two at their best (in a few years time) will be a handful for any team in the league and have shown some signs up forward. Not opposed to Gault playing if Witts isn't ready but I'd prefer him vying for White's spot in the team personally.

FB: Sinclair, Brown, Toovey
HB: Langdon, Frost, Oxley
C: Varcoe, Crisp, Dwyer
HF: Swan, Cloke, Fasolo
FF: Witts (alt Gault), White, Elliot
R: Grundy, Pendlebury, Adams

Int: Ramsay, Blair, Goldsack
Sub: Williams

I'm not completely sold on dropping a backman yet. If we're too back heavy then possibly Williams can push up into the midfield as he was touted to do during the pre-season. I like the thought of having defensive cover. If it has to happen though:

Out: Ramsay
In: Broomhead/Kennedy

Ramsay's stiff but we already have a multitude of lock-down defenders in the side and unfortunately he's the bottom of the pecking order. Tempted to drop Oxley instead but his kicking seems to be a point of difference for our back line. As for the in's, pick your poison. I prefer Broomhead personally but am high on the potential of both, they'll get their chance throughout the year.

FB: Sinclair, Brown, Toovey
HB: Langdon, Frost, Oxley
C: Varcoe, Crisp, Dwyer
HF: Swan, Cloke, Fasolo
FF: Witts (alt Gault), White, Elliot
R: Grundy, Pendlebury, Adams

Int: Williams, Blair, Goldsack
Sub: Broomhead (alt Kennedy)

IN Broomhead, Karnezis
OUT Sidebottom, DeGoey

Karnezis can play forward and spend some time through the midfield. Broomhead is the best option (IMO) to replace Sidebottom and could surprise given the opportunity. I want DeGoey running out full games and may need time in the VFL to get him there rather than cooling his butt on the bench.

We are going to miss Sidebottom but it gives opportunity and let's hope someone steps up.

crisp was pretty disappointing, expected more from him. a lot of times he just had the opportunity to be physical and didnt. probably holds his spot tho.

broomhead for sidebottom is the most like-for-like, i reckon thats all that will change tho. maybe a small defender out for Wittsy

OUT: Goldsack (He is an over rated lazy waste of space), Sidebottom (We will miss him), Williams (35% disposal efficiency can't be overlooked), Oxley (Needs to do better, if he can't make an impression against Brisbane, what chance has he got V Adelaide)
IN: Karnezis (He is Goldsack that can get more of the ball, and kick goals), Witts (should be fit), Seedsman (Better than Williams), Kennedy (Not sure why he gets overlooked to start with).

Great synopsis, agree with Karnesis comments an definitely see him being the Goldsack replacement long term.
Just needs to display the same intensity as Tyson, not sold on his defensive game just yet.
Oxley has upside and great skills so hoping if he strings a few games together he will step up.

It is good to have some players pushing to keep the current 22 at their best.

I thought Crisp was nearly best man on field at one point.

Not sure what you were watching

It's all well and good to talk about getting games into Broomhead and Freeman etc. but the fact is that Dwyer is miles ahead of these blokes on performance, and given we are missing Sidebottom, Greenwood, JT, (and arguably Beams), I really think now is the time to go for the experience we so desperately need.

If fit I'd agree.

I'm worried about Sammy's pace against the Crows. He is slick with his hands and a great footballer, but on a small ground like Etihad we can get seriously done (think the Bulldogs last year) if our press can't get back in time.

I'd be going for youth, and Broomy is a quick unit off the mark. Creative around goals, too.

Not sure about the hate for De Goey - one and a bit quarters of footy in the season proper is no time to properly assess his worth. Hell, a lot of the BenKen supporters have been vocal enough about the opportunities he's missed by being a sub. By all accounts JdG has been a solid contributor in the preseason and he's got just enough x-factor to provide some spark for the team on Saturday.

Given Adelaide is reasonably tall, I'd want Gault in to stretch their defence a bit. If we have Cloke and White running up through the 45m arc and taking the better defenders, it makes sense to drop Ox and have a 3rd mobile tall to work with (and help out Grundy vs Jacobson in the ruck!)

I have nothing but love for De Goey, it's just with Buck's post-match comments that he is unsure if he has the tank to run out a full game, combined with him fading in a few pre-season matches, suggests that him getting a run in the VFL wouldn't be the worst thing. However I don't have him as an out anyway.

It's also worth noting that Freeman tended to finish the preseason games strongly, and has had a fantastic preseason with the time trials etc; he is fit, lightning quick and will be a gun, I hope he gets a game soon.

I tend to think that Broomhead's finish to 2014 is certainly the equal of anything Dwyer has put up to date. So it makes sense to me to play someone with a higher ceiling given he arguably has similar runs on the board, particularly given he brings three attributes that the side needs (goal sense, pace, and good disposal). He certainly needs to work on finding more of the ball, but I think he is a class above VFL and that the AFL is where he needs to develop.... but I can see why you disagree and have no problem with it.

Dwyer's first season was superb. He has battled a few injuries since then & hasn't improved but in 2013, he was regularly getting 20 touches, 1 goal, 1 goal assist per game. I see huge upside with Broomy, but he hasn't really delivered that yet. I think Dwyer is pretty good at delivering the ball into the forward line. Broomy definitely the more creative of the two though.

Bucks mentioned Dwyer this morning (along with Seeds and Broomy) as players who did well in the VFL and have put their hands up. No mention of a possible ankle injury, but I'll take that with a grain of salt at this point.

Broomy in for Sidebottom. He's our future, we should play him. Hasn't been in outstanding form, but could rise to the occasion if given the opportunity.

Dwyer or Broomhead would compensate for losing Sidebottom.

I'd like to see Karnezis play soon.

Plus I think Gault will come in (to help Grundy) to stretch their back line, unfortunately for either Oxley or Ramsey.

Out: Sidebottom, Oxley or Ramsey

I think conditions being very different this week means we will go taller so I see Gault as the likely in assuming Witts isnt ready. Sidebottom could be replaced directly by this move although we may be light on for mids. Maybe Marley could be tried there but more likely s defender out and a mid in. If that is the case Ramsay my be the unlucky one. As to which mid I am not sure VFL practice match form will take the others past Karnezis. None of Broomy, BK or PK are true mids but could rotate there so Karnezis probably gets the nod

I have changed a lilttle from a prev post I think but for now favour

Out Sidey, Ramsay
In Gault, Karnezis

Agree in the second quarter we were starting to build our lead and remember Crispo getting amongst it with good use too.

He should stay in the team we need good users like him. In fact would rather him over Seedsman

I think we need to replace a running player (Steele, our best) with another runner. We struggled to run the game out on Saturday and including Gault and PK won't help that. I think we probably need to include one of the mids for Steele at the very least.
