Oh ffs.

He was there to negate Jake Melshem. He shut him completely out of the game.
He was shit. Appleby could have done the same job and won more ball in the process.

Until Moore returns Greenwood is extremely safe in the 22. Especially if he performs as he did on QB. His job on Melksham was top drawer! At that point we’ll be approaching matches where aerial dominance is important (Sydney, WC, North and Richmond).

My two cents now we know more about Wells and no change isn’t an option, Varcoe. It’ll be 4 weeks for a slight hamstring by the Carlton match so you would hope the HP team can get him up. If not I’d go with Sier to see what he has at the next level. Steele led them a merry dance in round 3 so he’d be the candidate to push forward.

If Varcoe is fit he's a pretty easy straight swap. If not, I'd bring Cal Brown in, but wouldn't be at all surprised to see Blair come in. Feels almost wrong saying it but has a great record against Carlton, is playing OK in the VFL and can play a 'similar' role.

He was given a role to negate him out of the game. Stuff his possessions.

I might be a bit more diplomatic in my assessment of Greenwood's effort than you, but overall I agree that he doesn't do enough, and I watched him on QB without being impressed by him. Melksham went goalless, but that's happened 7 times this season. Melksham is capable of playing some good footy (had a great game against Richmond), but he's also capable of going missing, and I think Jake had an ordinary day last Monday (he was actually injured the week before against the Bulldogs). His own inconsistencies weren't helped by the stifling of Melbourne's midfield.

And yet others think that Greenwood had a good day, and maybe the coaches think the same. I tend to think that Greenwood was serviceable, in the most generous sense of that term, but that Appleby would have been at least as serviceable. Bucks acknowledged that Applyby was 'stiff' to miss selection, so I'm sure he'll get his chance soon enough.

When assessing Greenwood, we need to see his opponent’s stats.
Fixed up Melksham who had form leading in. No need to drop at this stage.
He doesn’t need to accumulate possessions to be a contributor.
Wells for Sier/Wills or Cal Brown.

Because he didn't get enough disposals to satisfy you? Makes me wonder how we carried a shit player like Presti for so long!

Melbourne game is a perfect example of why Greenwood was rushed back and why he won't be dropped anytime soon. He's pretty much our only dedicated small/mid negator. Frees up the likes of Maynard to play more aggressively.

I like Apples, but he's much weaker 1v1 than Greenwood at the moment. Greenwood is a great 1v1 player, strong tackler, good spoiler and really versatile. Not every players needs to get 20+, although funnily enough, that's something Greenwood can do if needed, it's not something Appleby has ever done though.

Don’t see Blair in at all; only as a carry over type (and last minute inclusion) scenario.
I think his papers are stamped “only as emergency scenario”.

Varcoe as you suggested is the logical.
I can see Sier being introduced to get the taste and an opportunity. Might be even a few games for him as the opposition gives him a chance to step into the grade.

Only one change is necessary Varcoe in for Wells. And if Scharanberg is feeling a bit tired then Reid could come in for him,if fit.

I think you're underselling Apples 1v1. He's a tough defensive opponent and has a legitimate claim as a lock down back pocket.

If we lose to Carlton next week I think I will want to kill myself.

You won’t be alone.

Or even with a reshuffle of roles (Greenwood or Maynard) wouldn't mind us just bringing the guy in who was unlucky to be dropped in the first place in Appleby.

Either way - Carlton are a rabble. I don't think the change will make a huge amount of difference!

He's a weaker negating defender than a bloke that's 10 years older and more experienced than him. Don't think that's underselling him as much as it is just stating a fact.
