Unofficial Preview Changes vs GWS

Mate if you were looking objectively at this you’d look at the strength of the senior squad and go “yeah there’s just nowhere to put him rn”.

Like, we currently have 1 spot available for a young player and Steele rightly got the nod this week. It happens.
2 young players. Steele and Steene. I don’t quite think of Long as young, maybe recent. Long surviving such a full team indicates the club has faith, at least this week.

Think Kirby just wanted Jeff Buckley and Hallelujah in the same sentence :)

Out: Buller, Allan & Parker
In: Steene, Howe & Moore

Don’t agree with the changes, but I think that’s what will happen.

I think it makes us a bit tall, and less agile.
We’ve been one tall short especially in defence and lacking a proper second ruck…. Howe plays like a medium anyway. Much improved balance

The side is remarkably similar to last year’s Preliminary final with just two changes.Cox and Mihocek out for Mcstay and Steene.

Disappointed that we omitted Allan. To me one of our greatest priorities should be to work out our optimum midfield. It is not clear whether Allan is capable of being the inside mid we need. We persist in not playing him there fully, and then omitting him if he doesn't play well enough. We have to give him enough time full throttle in the midfield to see if he can be the other inside mid we need to back up Ned Long. If it turns out definitively that he isn't, then try Angry Anderson.

It just seems that we aren't systematically trying to assess what personnel will best fulfil our midfield needs.

Apart from this apparent lack of system in configuring our optimum midfield combination, by omitting Ed Allan I feel like we have weakened our midfield and replaced the missing mid with an additional tall, which does not serve team balance well.

Listen to the McRae post match presser after the Adelaide game and we were never going with the same forward structure, so I tipped Steene to be an inclusion.

I went with West also and still feel his ceiling is higher of the two but I hadn't factored in the availability of Howe at the time. 3 changes in structural pieces is probably enough for 1 week.

Not expecting any miracles out of Steene but do expect him to provide a better ruck contest than a Buller or McStay. Right now that would be enough to get him a game if he can deliver. Needs to be encouraged to fly for his marks when up forward as that's his greatest scope to impact in that role IMO.

Looking at the injury lists of both sides and by my calculations GWS are without 7 or 8 best 23 players. No excuses for us.

We've made the easiest and most obvious decision this week in dropping Buller but with no Taylor and Buckley the spotlight on McStay and Membrey to perform only intensifies.

Has Allan really imposed himself as an inside midfielder at VFL level before he somehow commands time in that most important position on the field at senior level? To me, he hasn’t. Most AFL level inside mids rack up touches and clearances at ease at the lower level. He’s had some good games, a few close, but not consistently. His running has stood up more than his ability to win his own ball.

I have more faith about Anderson becoming an AFL inside mid than Ed at this stage, and I’ve seen almost no game time from him.

Yes we very likely need to prioritise development this year and I think it’s likely Fly will come on board as we progress through the year, but it has to be for the right players (note that for deserving players like Long or Steele they are being given midfield time).

Especially IF Buller and/or West have Big Games in the VFL

I should have been clearer. 1 place for a young mid. Long has extra tickets due to last years form but those won’t last forever if he doesn’t perform.

The one possible downside of having a healthy list is that our VFL team will feature all of West, Buller, Howes and McCarthy.

If all 4 rotate through the forward line then they may start to cannibalise each other when it comes opportunity.

The forecast of a windy day with a top of 16 isn't ideal either so I'll be tempering my expectations.

Do yourself a favour and make a trip to Kyneton for pie tasting:

Can someone tell me, who knows his pre draft position or even VFL, is Allan's best position Wing, for some reason I thought i heard it was more inside, if that is right why doesn't he get an opportunity to try that? Correct me if I am totally wrong but wasn't his really good game against Melbourne primarily playing inside not on wing?

Try having 2 diesel cars
I had a diesel car once, but now I mostly do short trips, which don't burn out the particulate filter.
I recently bought a new petrol car, because I wanted a car that was fun to drive.
The only electric cars that are fun to drive start at $200K+.

To have kept Cox it would be worse for development. Future.

Inside from what ive seen at vfl level. He needs to build up to that inside role. Should have gave him more CBA in the last couple games especially when what we were doing wasn't working

Exactly.
Why aren't we trying to systematically work out the personnel for our best inside midfield?
We play the yong players in roles that don't allow us to assess whether they are good enough for the role we need them to play.
We drop them when they don't play up to standard in a role peripheral to where we actually would need them to play.
How does this make sense?
